THE volunteer crew of Fenit RNLI responded to a call for assistance by Valentia Coast Guard at approximately 23.38pm on Saturday when concerns were raised that a sailing vessel appeared to be taking in water.

Fenit RNLI launched its ALB (all weather lifeboat) which departed Fenit harbour at 11.54pm and proceeded to assist a sailing vessel approximately ten miles north of the Maharee Islands area near Castlegregory.

It is understood that the sailing vessel had two passengers onboard and assistance was sought due to concerns that the boat may have been taking in water. The boat was on passage from Ireland to a port in the UK.

Weather conditions were reported to be strong winds and heavy rain upon arrival. The sailing vessel diverted its course towards Fenit harbour following the Coast Guard request to Fenit Lifeboat to escort the vessel into Fenit harbour.

The sailing vessel and Fenit Lifeboat arrived back to the harbour at 2.20am. In line with normal protocol the lifeboat was then prepared by the crew to be ready for service for its next callout.

Just exactly one week ago Fenit RNLI Lifeboat launched both of its lifeboats late at night during thunderstorms after concerns were raised at suspected lighting coming from an item which was not identifiable without attending the scene.

Jackie Murphy, Fenit Lifeboat Press Officer was at the station during the callout late last night said; “Fenit RNLI are delighted with a safe and positive outcome for all concerned. Our crews are well trained and prepared to attend callouts in all sorts of weather. There is immense relief when all persons are returned safely to any port.

“I remain in awe of our volunteer crews who willingly go to sea in the dark of the night to assist persons in possible danger. As always, this is an opportunity to remind all users of the sea to be as prepared as possible when going to sea.

“The RNLI is a 24/7/365 service, and we encourage people to be familiar with the emergency services number of 999 or 112 and ask to the Coast Guard and to never be afraid to call for the service if any concerns exist,” added Jackie.
