Planting trees at Holy Family School on Monday morning.

IT was a busy start to the week at Holy Family School on Monday as school books were put to one side as all the children were invited to take part in a unique whole-of-school project to take climate and biodiversity action.

Each pupil from Junior Infants to Sixth Class planted their own tree on the school grounds to help create a 100m native hedge of native Irish Whitethorn along the school boundary.

This project was a collaborative community effort, with Tralee Tidy Towns providing help and advice on the lead up to the planting event, on the  day itself and facilitating the acquisition of the trees from ‘Trees on the Land’.

Caroline Kelly, representing the Parents Council was also on hand to help assist with the planting and mulching of the trees.

Anthony O’Sullivan, teacher at Holy Family School, said: “We were very happy to have such a good weather for our planting event. A huge thank you to Tralee Tidy Towns for helping to coordinate this event and to Parents’ Council member,  Caroline Kelly, for also volunteering on the day. We look forward to seeing the trees grow and blossom.”

Brendan O’Brien Chair of Tralee Tidy Towns said: “We were delighted to work with Holy Family School on this inspiring project. These trees will have lasting biodiversity value in our town – providing food for pollinators in the Spring and berries for our wild birds in the Winter.

“We were so pleased to be invited to help out on the project – and we look forward to planting the rest of the native trees kindly donated by Trees on the Land in the coming weeks. Thanks to members of staff Mr O’Sullivan, Ms Breen, Mr O’Conchúir, and Caroline Kelly for their excellent organisation of the children on the day,” he said.
