Div 1 County League Fixtures 2017 Round 2:
We played Austin Stacks at home in Round 2 of the Co League. Before the match commenced there was a Minute’s silence for the late Denis (Dinny) O’Connor, Austin Stacks Club.

It was a beautiful sunny day with a very strong wind blowing into the complex end of the pitch. Stacks played with the wind in the 1st half but it was Michels who scored first with a point from play from James Duggan.

This was followed with 3 points by Stacks David Mannix (2), Shane O’Callaghan(1). Mitchels were next to go on the score board with a well taken goal by Niall Sheehy leaving the score at 1-01 to 0-03 in the 1st quarter.

Points from Shane O’Callaghan and Sean Dukes of Austin Stacks put Stacks a point ahead. Michael Wrenn scored a wonderful long distance point from play. David Mannix scored a further point from play which was cancelled out with a point from Alan O’Donoghue.

Sean Dukes put Stacks 2 further points ahead. Niall Sheehy replied with a point from play for Mitchels and the last score of the 1st half was from Shane O’Callaghan point for Austin Stacks. The half time score John Mitchels 1-04, Austin Stacks 0-09.

Mitchels Sean Moloney scored a point from play reducing the deficit to 1 point. Stacks dominated the play for the next 10 mins with points from David O’Sullivan, David Mannix, Shane O’Callaghan and Mike O’Donnell.

Mitchels then hit a purple patch with scores from Alan O’Donoghue (1-01), Niall Sheehy(1-0), George Bastible (0-01), James Duggan(0-01) leaving the score line John Mitchels 3-08, Stacks 0-13 heading into the last quarter.
With Mitchels back in the lead the pace was fast and furious and it was Stacks who went on to score 1-02 giving Stacks a1 point lead.

Mitchels levelled the game again with a Shane O’Connor fisted point. David Mannix scored another point from a converted free to give Stacks the lead. Shane O’Connor levelled the game with a point from play and Mitchels struck a well taken goal by Lawrence Bastible. The last score of the game was left to Greg Horan Stacks with a point from play leaving the final score Mitchels 4-10,  Stacks 1-17.

This was a great performance by Mitchels against our neighbours Austin Stacks. Both teams served up a wonderful game of football and kept all present entertained for the duration of the match.
A speedy recovery to our own Michael Wrenn who went off with an injury early in the second half.
