The Kerry Women’s Resource Centre has found a new home on Maine Street.

THE Kerry Women’s Resource Centre has a new home at Market Place, Maine Street Tralee.

For now, the centre will support women through phone calls and social media platforms. They are also in discussion with tutors to roll out workshops and training  in small groups.

The resource centre, which was based in Aras and Phobail, closed in late 2018, but a group of women came together in 2019 to set up the centre again and have now found a suitable location.

“We want the women of Kerry to take ownership of this centre and become actively involved in ensuring it is relevant and viable going forward,” said a spokesperson for the service.

“Women can volunteer, use the service, become members, fundraise and offer any help they feel motivated to give. Our centre will be a source of support, referral and signposting. We will be there to help and encourage but also to celebrate and educate.”

The spokesperson paid special tribute to their chairperson, Shahidah Janjua, who passed away on March 28 as a result of a long standing illness.

“Shahidah was loved by all who knew her through her work as an inspirational writer, poet, advocate, therapist, environmentalist and feminist activist and friend. However her beautiful spirit remains with us  and continues to motivate us to continue what she had started.”

Kerry Women’s Resource Centre would like to thank the following for their support… Dingle Probus group; women who took part in the VHI Marathon last year and organisers of the pub quiz in Kerins O’Rahilly’s; the team at Paco Tralee; Jim Finucane; the Kerry Choral Union; Michelle Ann Houlihan from Kerry Education and Training Board; Geraldine and the team at the volunteer centre for organising Covid training and Jean Foley with Kerry County Council.

They also thanked the many businesses who have supported them so far. The group’s next fundraiser takes place on Sunday, August 30. Deirdre Foley is running 10k in aid of the centre and they are encouraging as many  women as possible to walk or run 5k where they are at on that day.
