THE launch of the Kerry 2016 Centenary Programme Book & DVD will take place at 7pm on Thursday, October 5 in The Rose Hotel in Tralee.

Commemorative events to mark the centenary of the Easter Rising took place all over the county last year and the year has been marked in a print publication which showcases key events that took place throughout the year in towns and villages right across Kerry.

The publication details lectures, recitals, readings, performances, exhibitions and walks that reflected, remembered and re-imagined the 1916 Rising.

The publication also highlights the State ceremonies that took place in Kerry. State ceremonial events took place at Ballykissane Pier, in Valentia Island and at Banna Strand (attended by President Michael D Higgins) where over 7,000 people were in attendance to mark the centenary of the arrival of Roger Casement on Good Friday 1916.

“It was a very special year and we can be proud in Kerry of how we marked the year and the great work that was done by the county and its many communities. Their pride and effort is very evident in the publication,” Moira Murrell, Chief Executive of Kerry County Council stated.

The publication launch will also be accompanied by a screening of a DVD which shows highlights of the State Ceremonial events in Kerry. “The evening in the Rose Hotel is about acknowledging all of those who worked hard to make the year happen. We can be proud in Kerry of the way we marked the Easter Rising and the way we have remembered the great heroes from our County who were involved from the outset”, stated Councillor John Sheahan, Cathaoirleach at Kerry County Council.

“An amount of time was spent gathering information for the book, and whilst some events may not be covered, the book provides a good overview of centennial commemorations during 2016 in Kerry,” stated Kate Kennelly, Kerry 2016 Coordinator.

Anyone wishing to attend the event at the Rose Hotel is being asked to email the Arts Office at Kerry County Council arts@kerrycoco.ie as seats are limited.
