KERRY Fine Gael TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, said that today marks another significant step forward in the campaign to build the new N22 between Cork and Kerry via Macroom and Ballyvourney.

Cork County Council will open the pre-qualification process for contractors who wish undertake the construction of the by-pass today.

The advance works, which started in early 2017, continue with a significant portion of the fencing, site clearance and archaeological work well underway.

Minister Griffin says that he will be following up on the matter closely with all of the state’s stakeholders to help ensure the beginning of full construction in 2019.

He said: “I have campaigned hard for this new road over the last 10 years. It’s very close to full construction following recent developments that I helped to secure, with the major step being the inclusion of the N22 on the Capital Plan in 2015. More recently, in 2016 I announced the beginning of clearance works would commence and last autumn we saw pre-tender stage begin. I fully intend to see this project through so that everyone will be able to benefit from the enormous socio-economic benefits that it will bring.”
