Mercy Mounthawk Student Wins Public Speaking Competition

A MERCY Mounthawk student emerged as one of two winners in a public speaking competition involving secondary schools from all over Kerry.

The Killarney Soroptimist Club held the Kerry Finals of the Soroptimist Public Speaking Competition at Killarney House and Gardens on Thursday.

The competition has been running for 38 years nationally and is open to girls in Senior Cycle of  Secondary School. The participants spoke on topics provided by Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland.

The winners were Laura Foley from Mercy Mounthawk, Tralee and Kate Rudden from St. Brigids Secondary School, Killarney.

Laura chose her topic on Health and spoke on how Good Mental Health Is Fundamental To Thriving In Life while Kate spoke chose Education as her topic and spoke about how Education Is The Most Powerful Weapon Which We Can Use To Change The World.

These two students will now go forward to the Regional Final which is being held in Laurel Hill Colaiste, Limerick at the end of January. This competition encourages girls to play a more prominent position in public life.

President of Killarney Soroptimist Club Teresa Irwin congratulated all of the participants for taking part and especially the winners on the day, the students, teachers, schools and parents for getting involved and ensuring the competition goes from strength to strength.
