THE third phase of the Tralee Bay Wetlands Mural is well underway, with local Tralee artist James Hayes on site.

This 30-metre depiction of the natural environment of the Wetlands shows the array of biodiversity on the site, as well as the human interactions that exist there.

The project aims to give people a greater understanding of the natural beauty in our ecosystems, to showcase the flora and fauna that exists in Tralee Bay and to encourage people to spend more time admiring and appreciating nature, and the benefits of spending time outdoors.

The Artist quite literally wanted to illustrate visually some of the things you can expect to see, the broad selection of wildlife and species, etc.

“I am also keen to speak to the human experiential side of things, to create some imagery that might give a sense of what it means to simply be and dwell in the midst of this kind of natural environment,” said James.

Regular visitors to the wetlands are engaged in the progress of the latest addition to the mural, James often has people approaching him to compliment and admire his work.

James generally spends 4-5 hours at a time adding to the piece, but there’s an enjoyment in seeing the project progress week to week. He expects to complete the mural by the middle of October.

The project is funded by Creative Ireland Kerry and has been organised by the Tralee MD Office and Tralee Bay Wetlands.

Emma Carmody, the newly appointed Creative Communities Engagement Officer in the Arts Office of Kerry County Council, says “It’s great to see further additions to the vibrant and ever-increasing art scene of Tralee. The Creative Communities projects provide a wonderful opportunity for local creatives to connect with each member of the county. The vision of Creative Ireland is to mainstream creativity in the life of the nation, so that we can all realise our creative potential”.
