Orlagh new profile 1HAVE you ever uttered the words “that wouldn’t happen in my day”?

Well I certainly have and I almost immediately laughed at it, as they were not words that I ever thought I would hear myself  say.

Without sounding like a grumpy old bat, there is something that I have to get off my chest. What has happened to children being taught manners and more importantly, why aren’t parents enforcing them?

It has become almost a mortal sin to have an opinion on a bold child. ADHD or NIMH are often given as reasons for bad behaviour in children.

This is dreadful for those who are genuinely affected by such disorders as they almost appear to be “watered down” medical conditions today. Before anyone thinks that I am dismissing all cases I am doing the exact opposite.

Sometimes when I see a bold child kicking, screaming or biting a parent, I wonder why can’t they get a “slap on the arse” like I would have gotten if I dared act like that.

Friends who have children look at me in horror at the mere suggestion of this barbaric behaviour.  Don’t I realise that this child could be trying to express him/herselves?

Sweet Jerusalem I have bitten my tongue more times, I am surprised that I have one left in my mouth. I have to repeat the mantra “not my child, not my problem, not my child, not my problem…” over and over again to avoid an argument.

Good manners and respect are becoming a rarity in children today and the blame for this lies with the parents. If you allow them to speak back to you or throw tantrums without reprecussions you are reaping what you sow.

Children learn their behaviour from their parents and if you allow them to act like spoilt brats as kids they will continue this behaviour in life.

Many of my friends work in education and I have heard from them first hand how teachers are constantly being undermined by parents when their little darlings are reprimanded.

Parents arrive at the school to question why their child is being “bullied” by the teacher?  Seriously? When is this craziness going to end?

If a teacher sees fit to punish a child for bad behaviour, then they should be allowed to do the job that they have trained so hard to do.

Stop and think before you blame the teacher for your little brat’s latest hobby of spitting or cursing. Be grateful that the teacher will use their skills to teach your child right from wrong and apply appropriate punishment.

Good manners and respect for your elders will become a thing of the past if things don’t change soon. Unplug the wifi and get your kids playing outside and mixing with real people and not “friends” on Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat.

They will thank you in the future when they have real life communication skills and are able to interact with work colleagues or clients.

Take back the power in your home, you are the adult.

Until next week,

Teach manners…

Orlagh xx
