KERRY County Council is to introduce further treatment of the surface of The Square after a successful trial period over the past six months.

At the meeting of the Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday, Fine Gael Cllr Jim Finucane said the trial area treated had had proved effective in reducing the chance of slippage and asked could the rest of the Square be treated in the same way to ensure it is fully safe for pedestrians in wet conditions.

The Square has been a source of concern for many members of the public over the years, with complaints that it is particularly dangerous for pedestrians when wet.

In reply, Council Management acknowledged the improved performance of the surface areas treated and is now in the process of extending the trial area over an area measuring in excess of 50% of the Square.

In addition, a significant submission has been made for funding under the Urban Regeneration Development Fund which includes for the reimagining and redesign of the Square.

Cllr Finucane welcomed the reply, but asked why the whole of the Square could not be treated. Tralee MD Manager Michael Scannell said the areas that will be treated will cover all the parts of the Square which have caused difficulty in the past.
