REPORT: Kerry FC Beat Longford Town To Record First Home League Win

.

David Moriarty reports on a historic night for Kerry FC as they recorded their first home league win at Mounthawk Park…

KERRY FC 3—0 LONGFORD TOWN

Kerry FC were back at home on Friday night as they took on Longford Town in Mounthawk Park for the final game of the first quarter of the season.

Kerry FC came into the game off the back of yet another draw last Monday as they played UCD to finish the Bank Holiday weekend.

A second-half Daniel Okwute goal got Kerry back into the game in the second half and the kingdom pressured for the remainder of the game but did not score a second.

Ryan Kelliher came close to getting the winner in added time but was ruled offside to everyone’s dismay.

Continued below…

.

It is the fiftieth competitive game in the club’s history and the fiftieth competitive appearance for midfielder Sean McGrath who is the only player in the squad to be involved in every game in Kerry FC’s brief history.

It is the first time in that period that Kerry will play a team below them in the table, so they were hoping to extend that gap by the end of the night.

Like Kerry FC, Longford Town are yet to win a league game this season and were hoping that their first trip to Kerry would kick off their season in the best way possible.

Kerry FC head coach Conor McCarthy said during the week that he expects a tough battle against the midland club but is hopeful that his team will come out full of strength and energy to get the club’s first home League of Ireland victory.

Continued below…

.

Longford had the early possession, but they did extraordinarily little to capitalise on the ball that they had in that period with Kerry coming into it after surviving the early pressure, having the game’s first two major chances themselves.

Daniel Okwute first had a shot from the edge of the box but was gathered easily from Jack Brady and Kennedy Amechi let off a shot with great power which forced another save from Brady which was a bit harder to deal with.

The shot resulted in a corner that reached Sean O’Connell who got another attempt on the board for Kerry FC but unfortunately dragged wide of the post.

On the half-hour mark, Kerry’s early signs at goal were paid back to them as Sean McGrath put the home side in the lead.

A loose pass from Longford set Daniel Okwute on his way and he passed it inside to Ryan Kelliher. Kelliher then gave it inside to Steven Healy in space who looked up to find Sean McGrath.

It looked like the chance had gone away from him, but he twisted and turned, eventually letting fly as the ball went straight into the bottom right corner.

A big moment for McGrath as previously mentioned he was playing his fiftieth competitive game in Kerry FC’s fiftieth competitive game, and it was fitting he was the man to put Kerry FC in front.

Kerry dominated proceedings from there for the rest of the half with Kennedy Amechi having another shot on goal on the edge of the box but again another effort from Kerry went wide.

Luke Wade-Slater had Longford’s biggest chance of the half just a few minutes later and probably should have equalised.

A great cross from Kyle O’Connor was put into a dangerous area and the diving header from Slater went just wide to the relief of the home crowd.

Just before halftime, Kerry extended their lead through Ryan Kelliher. Sean McGrath was involved again as he sent Ryan on his way.

A drop of the shoulder inside the area tricked the Longford defence and he stuck the ball into the bottom right corner to give Kerry FC a bit of breathing space.

It could have been three just before the halftime whistle as a ball played into Kennedy Amechi was just caught underneath him.

Although he still directed his effort towards the goal, Brady was there to keep it out. Daire McCarthy also had a shot saved from Daly before halftime as it was becoming hard to fathom that Kerry were not leading by at least three at the end of the first forty-five.

Daniel Okwute was itching to get on the score sheet and had two shots in quick succession. The first went wide but the second was forced away from Brady for a corner which did not lead to anything.

Longford looked out on their feet and could not break down the Kerry FC defence despite their best efforts.

Andy Spain, Kevin Williams, and Sam Aladesanusi all winning great headers making life much easier for Antonio Tuta between the sticks.

Kerry added a third with fifteen minutes to play through Kennedy Amechi who deserved the goal through his brilliant gameplay both attacking and defensive during the entirety of the game.

Sean McGrath added another assist to his man-of-the-match performance as he passed the ball through to Kennedy who brilliantly finished his chance with an outside-of-the-boot shot into the bottom left corner.

Mounthawk Park was rocking despite the terrible weather but Kerry FC had the ground singing in the rain.

Four minutes of added time were played, and it ended three nil to Kerry FC on a historic night for the kingdom as they won their first-ever League of Ireland home fixture on their twenty-third time of asking.

Everyone involved in the club deserved that one as Kerry FC extended their unbeaten run to seven games. They go to The Markets Field next Friday when they take on Treaty United away for the first time this season.

Know Your Rights: Deferring Payment Of The Local Property Tax

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

In certain circumstances, you can delay paying some or all of your Local Property Tax (LPT) until a later date.

This is known as a deferral. If you meet the deferral requirements, you can choose to defer the LPT until your financial circumstances improve or the property is sold. However, this does not mean that you are exempt from the LPT.

Interest is charged on the deferred amount and the deferred amount remains a charge on the property.

If you qualify for partial deferral, you can defer 50% of your LPT and pay the other 50%.

Deferral of LPT based on income

You may qualify for full or partial deferral of LPT for a property you own and live in if your income is below a certain amount. You qualify for deferral each year based on your estimated gross income for the previous year.

So, for example, if you were liable for LPT on 1 November 2023 (the liability date) you would estimate your gross income for 2023 to see whether you qualify for deferral or partial deferral of the payment in 2024.

Continued below…

.
.

If you claimed a deferral for a year and your circumstances change you must inform Revenue.

Deferral following a death

If one member of a couple who qualified for a deferral dies, the deferral will remain in place until the next valuation date (currently 1 November 2025) and the income of the surviving person is not taken into account until then.

On 1 November 2025, the surviving person may make a claim for deferral of the tax. If you satisfy the conditions, you will qualify for deferral.

If you do not qualify for deferral after 2025, the amount that was deferred up to the end of 2025 may continue to be deferred. Interest will continue to be charged on the deferred amount in the usual way.

If you inherit a property from someone who is not your spouse, civil partner or cohabitant, Revenue may allow the deferral to continue if you apply for a deferral and qualify.

The transfer of the property to you means that the tax deferred (plus interest) becomes payable at that point if you do not meet the conditions for a deferral in your own right.

Deferral for personal representatives of a deceased liable person

When a person dies, their property passes to their personal representative. The personal representative then has the duty to distribute the deceased person’s money and property in accordance with the will or with the laws of intestacy if there is no will.

The personal representatives of a deceased person may apply for a deferral of LPT until the earlier of either:

Continued below…

.

• The date on which the property is transferred or sold
• 3 years after the date of death

To qualify for deferral, the deceased person must have been the sole owner of the property but it does not need to have been their main residence.

Deferral based on personal insolvency

If you have entered into a Debt Settlement Arrangement or a Personal Insolvency Arrangement, you can apply for a deferral of LPT while the insolvency arrangement is in place.

You must have formally agreed your insolvency arrangement with the Insolvency Service of Ireland and your Insolvency Case Number must be included with your application. You will have to pay the deferred LPT, including accrued interest, when the insolvency arrangement ends.

Deferral based on hardship

You can claim a deferral if:

• You have had an unexpected and unavoidable significant loss or expense and
• As a result, you are unable to pay LPT without too much financial hardship

You must disclose your financial circumstances and any other information required by Revenue.

Examples of the type of losses or expenses that may be considered include:

• Emergency medical expenses
• Major repairs that are unexpectedly needed to keep your house habitable
• Expenses due to a serious accident or the death of a family member
• The loss of your job
• A bad debt you incur if you are self-employed

Interest charged

Any deferred amounts have interest charged on them at a rate of 4% a year. The previous deferral interest rate of 4% applied up to 31 December 2021. The rate of interest charged on all deferred amounts from 1 January 2022 is 3% per year.

How to apply for a deferral of LPT

You can apply for a deferral or partial deferral on the basis of your income when you make your LPT return.

If you have already submitted an LPT return, you can apply to Revenue in writing by post or through myEnquiries. If you are applying for a deferral under any of the other categories, you must submit the LPT2 form.

You can get further information from the Revenue Local Property Tax (LPT) Branch, Tel: (01)738 3626

• If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

Finnegan On Films: How ‘The Bodyguard’ Made It To The Big Screen

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, looks at how one of tonight’s films on TV, ‘The Bodyguard’ came to the big screen…

When you consider all the components and stages that go to making a film, from the blank page right at the start, all the way to the final production that is released to the public, it is amazing that they happen at all.

So this week I am going to do a deep dive on one film.  The Bodyguard (Saturday TG4 9.45pm) is a 1992 romantic thriller, starring Whitney Houston as Rachel Marron, a famous singer and actress who is receiving death threats from an obsessive fan.

Frank Farmer (Kevin Costner) is a former US Secret Service agent who is hired to protect her. This is one of those films that was hated by critics and loved by audiences.

Continued below…

.

However, you may be surprised to find out that the first draft of the script was written way back in 1975 by Lawrence Kasdan, a copywriter trying to break into the movies, and the film was to star Diana Ross and Steve McQueen.

.

The script was taken on, ignored and rejected by various studios well over 60 times.  Ryan O’Neal, who was dating Diana Ross, replaced McQueen, and then Ross left the project.

Meanwhile Kasdan was gaining a reputation as a writer/director who could update old genres and give them a modern twist, especially with snappy dialogue.

He worked on the original Star Wars trilogy, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Body Heat and Silverado, whose cast included the rising star that was Kevin Costner, who became interested in the Bodyguard script.

Continued below…

.

After the Academy Award winning, and more importantly, box office success of Dances With Wolves in 1990, Costner had the clout to green light other projects, so the dust was blown off The Bodyguard folder.

Kasdan had always seen Rachel as being played by a singer and Costner agreed that it would give added authenticity to the film.

Whitney Houston was a very popular singer with multiple number one albums and singles, but her singing career had levelled off.  She had acting ambitions, but had wanted to start off with smaller roles to develop her skills.

It was Costner who finally persuaded her to take the role.  She already had the real experience of being in the public eye.  Costner promised that he would guide her, as long as she did not take acting lessons!

Of course, an added bonus to having this talent to hand was what became the record breaking soundtrack, including Houston’s cover version of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” which almost didn’t make the final cut!

The original main title song was to be ‘What Becomes of the Broken Hearted’ but that had just been used in Fried Green Tomatoes… so a new search was made, and it was Costner who insisted on the “a capella” opening.

There was talk of a sequel, with Princess Diana playing the protectee with a very similar plot to the original, and a remake staring Tessa Thompson and Chris Hemsworth but as the original showed, these things can take time.   Enjoy!

The draw has been made for the 2024 Kerry Petroleum Senior Club Football Championship.

We have been paired with Dingle, Na Gaeil and Dr Crokes.

Our first fixture will be against Na Gaeil. Dates, times and venues to be confirmed in due course.

Credit Union County Senior Football League: Division 1, Round 2 Result and Round 3 Fixture

Milltown/Castlemaine 1-08
Ballymacelligott 1-08

Venue: Caherslee, Tralee

Referee: Edmund Walsh (Rathmore)

Our Senior ‘A’ side took a share of the spoils away from Caherslee in Tralee on Saturday evening in Round 2 of the Credit Union County Senior Football League. Conditions underfoot were challenging for both sides due to the inclement weather all week.

First half points from Gavin Horan (0-1), Sean Hogan (0-3) and Dara Hogan (0-1) followed by a well taken goal from Cathal Moriarty saw us carry a 1-05 to 0-05 lead into the half time interval. Ballymac’s first half points came from Aidan Breen (0-3), Vinnie Horan (0-1) and Daire Keane (0-1).
In the second half, Ballymac raised a green flag inside the opening minutes when an Aidan Breen free dropped into the square and ended up in the Milltown/Castlemaine net. Scores were exchanged between the teams for the remainder of the encounter with no more than one point separating the teams on any occasion.
Aidan Breen and Vinnie Horan kept the Ballymac side in front as we entered the final quarter but Cathal Moriarty and Dara Hogan ensured that the points would be shared. On the balance of play and considering both sides had chances at various stages, it was a fair reflection of the contest and both sides will be content taking a point each.

Round 3 takes place this weekend when Milltown/Castlemaine will play host to neighbours Laune Rangers on Sunday, April 7th at 2:00pm in the Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown. All support is welcome

Credit Union County Senior Football League: Division 6B, Round 2 Result and Round 3 Fixture

Round 3 will take place on Saturday, April 6th when Milltown/Castlemaine take on Kenmare Shamrocks ‘B’ at 6:30pm in the Paddy Burke Memorial Park, Milltown. All support is welcome for the players and management.

Venue: Fr. Breen Park, Kenmare

Milltown Bowling Club:

New Year, New hobby.
Want to try something new and fun then come along to Milltown Nagle Rice community centre and have a go at short mat bowls.
All you need is just a pair of comfortable shoes for two hours of gently rolling bowls along a 1.8 meter wide x 12 meter long mat.
A timber block is placed midway along the mat and the aim of the game is to roll a bowl along the mat, avoiding the block and touching a yellow ball called the “Jack” at the opposite end.
A wooden fender is placed at both ends to keep the bowls from rolling off the mat end.
Nearest bowl to the Jack after 9 ends scores, the more of your bowls closer than your opponent the more you score.
All training and guidance will be provided along with the use of club bowls to get you started.
Once you get going then we have league and cup competitions, friendly individual and group matches along with the opportunity to play other clubs within Kerry.
Sounds simple!!!
Well the only way to find out is to come along and have a go.
First night is free and it’s only a fiver then per night for two hours of fun and learning to play one of the fastest growing indoor sports for all age groups in Ireland.
Milltown bowls club looks forward to seeing you on Tuesday and Friday nights at 8pm.

Kerry FC Hoping For Three Points When They Take On Longford Town

.

Ivan Hurley previews Kerry FC’s game against Longford Town on Friday night at Mounthawk Park…

KERRY FC reach the quarter mark of the season when they take on Longford Town tomorrow evening in Mounthawk Park (kick-off 7.45pm, for tickets click here).

With each team playing each other on four occasions throughout the season, Matchday 9 marks the 25% mark of league completion.

Kerry come into tomorrow night’s game in a very impressive run of form. Six games unbeaten in all competitions, with five straight draws in the league over the last five match days.

Continued below…

.

A 1-1 draw against the relegated UCD AFC on Monday last was possibly the most impressive of them all, fighting back from a 1-0 deficit at halftime, the kingdom came out with a new lease of life in the second half to eke out an impressive point in Belfield.

It could have been all three but a 92nd-minute goal by Ryan Kelliher was ruled out for offside. But 5 draws in a row for this side puts Kerry in uncharted waters as fans wait with optimism for the opening win of the 2024 SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division.

Longford Town on the other hand come into the game in somewhat mixed form. Three defeats against UCD, Cork City and Finn Harps mean the Midlanders have lost all three home games so far this campaign.

Longford’s three league points have come from draws on the road against local rivals Athlone, Bray Wanderers and Cobh Ramblers.

Although they have picked up points in their three away games to date, Longford have lost the lead in all three games and even squandered a 0-3 halftime lead in Lissywollen.

Longford sit bottom of the league on three points with the same goal difference as Kerry having played 2 games less at this stage due to waterlogged pitches.

So this has the makings of a classic in Mounthawk Park as both teams go in search of their first three points in 2024.

Kerry FC are on a club record run of six games unbeaten since the Munster Senior Cup semi-final victory over Treaty United on March 1st.

This includes five straight draws in the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division. The current record for consecutive draws in the league is held by Dundalk who recorded 10 straight draws in the 2001 season.

Kerry FC have a fresh bill of health following a busy Easter bank holiday weekend with two matches in 4 days. Valerii Dolia remains out long term. Nathan Gleeson is also unavailable due to an infection.

Jack Kavanagh is still being assessed and monitored and a decision on his inclusion will be made before the game. Samuel Aladesanusi, Ronan Teahan and Daire McCarthy all made it back and played minutes against UCD last time out.

“I don’t think Longford started the season the way they would have liked, but I’m sure they are looking at this fixture and thinking it is a way to kick-start their season as well,” said Conor McCarthy.

“I’m sure it will be a tough game, so we will have to be at 100% and if we can do that hopefully we can turn a draw into a win on Friday night.”

Six Kerry Students Represent County In Dáil na nÓg At Leinster House

.
Delegates from Kerry Comhairle na nÓg Keira Griffin, Emma O’Shea, Máire O Shea, Konrad Kopec, Joe Horan and Aodhrán Morrison at Leinster House recently.

SIX delegates from Kerry were among the 160 young people from Comhairle na nÓg (local youth councils) across Ireland who met in Dáil Éireann recently to debate the critical issue of mental health.

Mental health was identified by over 3,000 young people across Comhairle na nÓg as their priority issue for discussion in advance of the day, which they feel that the Government should do more to address.

Kiera Griffin, Kerry Comhairle na nÓg member, was part of the Dáil na nÓg Steering Committee and was a speaker in the Opening Ceremony. Keira gave an insightful overview on the work of the Steering Committee and why Mental Health was chosen as the theme.

Continued below…

.

“In the autumn, all Comhairlí had their annual youth conferences where they voted on the issues that matter most to young people,” said Keira.

“Over 3,000 of us took part in these conferences to help choose the theme for Dáil na nÓg. As you now know, mental health came out on top. This is an issue of real importance to young people as it affects all of us in some way.”

Other Kerry students taking part were Emma O’Shea, Máire O’Shea, Konrad Kopec, Joe Horan and Aodhrán Morrison.

Dáil na nÓg, Ireland’s National Youth Parliament, now in its 22nd year, tackled a range of issues related to mental health, including body image, school stress, and mental health services.

The biennial parliament, which provides a platform for young people to speak about and make recommendations on the issues that most affect them, was hosted by the Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghaíl, who chaired the Opening Session in the Dáil Chamber.

Discussions were held around how mental health affects the lives of young people in their communities and what changes need to be implemented to address these challenges and improve the experiences of young people in Ireland.

Following a formal vote in the afternoon where delegates processed through the lobbies of the Dáil, school stress was selected as the priority topic.

This will inform the work of the incoming Comhairle na nÓg National Executive 2024-2026, who are tasked with advocating for policy change in this area during their tenure.

Dáil na nÓg is Ireland’s National Youth Parliament and it takes place every two years. Dáil na nÓg provides a forum where children and young people raise and debate issues of concern to them and influence the development of public policy. For more information, visit www.comhairlenanog.ie

“This 65 Roses Day, I am asking everyone to get involved and support 65 Roses Day to help CFI continue to provide supports like the Exercise Grant, Fertility supports and Advocacy services for people with CF in Ireland.”

Funds raised on 65 Roses Day will help to provide exercise equipment, counselling sessions, and grants for people with CF undergoing a transplant, fertility assessment or families with CF who have recently been bereaved.

Funds also go to support Cystic Fibrosis research and the building of new CF hospital facilities and the funding of specialist CF staff.

65 Roses Day derives its name from the way in which young children often first say the words “cystic fibrosis”.

Excitement Builds Ahead Of Kerry’s National League Final This Sunday

.
In attendance at a photocall ahead of the 2024 Lidl Ladies National Football League Finals was Kerry captain Niamh Carmody.  Photo by David Fitzgerald

CAPTAINS and representatives from the eight counties, including Kerry, participating in the 2024 Lidl Ladies National Football League Finals gathered on Tuesday at Lidl Head Office in Tallaght, Dublin, with their sights firmly set on weekend silverware.

The Divisions 3 and 4 Finals will form part of a double-header at Grant Heating St Brendan’s Park, Birr, next Saturday, April 6, followed by another double-bill on Sunday, April 7, at Croke Park, when the Divisions 1 and 2 champions will be crowned.

Ahead of Sunday’s fixtures at Croke Park, the big question is whether Armagh can clinch silverware in their maiden Division 1 Final appearance, or if it’ll be Kerry who retain their title and claim a 13th crown in total?

Continued below…

.

This fixture (which has a 3pm throw-in) is a repeat of the 2022 Lidl NFL Division 2 Final between the counties, won by Kerry, while Armagh returned to Croke Park last year and won the second tier title Final against Laois to gain promotion to the top flight.

Kerry were once undisputed Division 1 League queens. From 1980-1985, they won six successive titles and followed that up with five-in-a-row from 1987-1991.

The long wait for a 12th title ended in 2023 when the team managed by Declan Quill and Darragh Long got the better of Galway in impressive fashion at Croke Park – and now they’re aiming to hang onto the coveted silverware.

The Division 1 Final will throw in at 3pm and will be preceded at 1pm by the Division 2 decider involving Kildare and Tyrone, who have both been promoted to the top flight for 2025. Both games will be broadcast live on TG4.

Ticket details for all games are available by visiting the Ladies Gaelic Football Association website and accessing the link: https://bit.ly/4ceQTom

“I can remember the impact that first workshop held in the Brehon Hotel with Dr. Terry Stephens had back in 2018. The room was full of industry representatives from across the county all there to gain insights and to come together to see what we could do as a collective to drive Kerry as the ultimate destination for visitors both national and international and to be an effective voice for tourism in the county.”

Pat O’Leary, Chairperson of Kerry Tourism Industry Federation, said; “KTIF since its formation has on behalf of its members, championed the tourism sector across the whole county.  The benefits of a collective approach to marketing, sustainability, and training as the single entity representing the tourism industry in the county interacting with local and national government bodies and industry agencies have enhanced Kerry’s reputation as the number one visitor destination in the country.  The enhanced discoverkerry.com website and new Kerry brand developed in conjunction with Kerry County Council and Kerry SciTech is an example of how the county can benefit from this cooperative approach.”
