IT was a fantastic day in Fenit on Saturday for the Tri Kingdom Come Triathlon.

Over 400 people took part in the event – many from the Tralee Triathlon Club – and the weather stayed kind despite a shower early on.

The community of Fenit also came out in force to join family and friends of the participants in cheering them on.

Romping home to podium success was Kerry athlete, Mark Nolan, who is originally from Kilflynn and who is now based in Cork.

He came home to Kerry this weekend to race completing the course in just 58.01 to win the overall Sprint triathlon.

He was joined on the winning podium by his wife, Amy Wolfe, who is from Cork and who finished the event in 1.09.00.

“I am even more delighted to win at home in Kerry,” he said.

Amy is just back racing after giving birth to the couple’s daughter, Lynn, just seven months ago.

It was a tight race for Mark who just made it home ahead of local athlete, Cillian Tierney, who came in second place in a time of 58.21.

The 18-year old from The Spa has been making waves on the national scene ad has a number of podium places under his belt this year and hopefully more to come.

“I had aimed for first place but it wasn’t to be but it was wonderful to be at home racing” said Cillian.

“It was wonderful to race at home with the cycle going pass my door and the swim in the bay where I train.”

The record breaking number of entries has put Tri Kingdom Come Triathlon, organised by Tralee Triathlon Club, firmly on the map as one of Kerry’s leading sporting events.

Hundreds of competitors from Kerry and all across the country including Cork, Limerick, Clare and Dublin and even as far away as Paris took part in the event.

The key race of the day was the Sprint Triathlon incorporating a 750m swim, a 20km cycle and a 5km run and this attracted almost 300 competitors alone, both local and national.

The Try-a-Tri distance was a 250m swim, an 8km cycle and a 2.5km run and this attracted new entrants to the sport of triathlon.

Organised by the Tralee  Triathlon Club and sponsored by Landers Outdoor World Tralee, it was also a fundraiser for the RNLI.

Some of the funds from the event also go to towards Fenit Development Association and local projects in the village, so it really was a great event for the community.

Race Director, Joanne Allman, was thrilled with the event and praised everyone who made it the successful event that it was.

“This event could not have gone ahead without huge local support so I want to thank everyone who came on board in any way to help us including local sponsors especially Landers, all our club Tralee Triathlon club, all our volunteers both from the club and the local community and Fenit Development Association and the local national school.”  Scroll down for photos…
