FENIT was the place to be yesterday as hundreds of athletes took part in this year’s Tri Kingdom Triathlon.

With a fantastic course, great community support and a wonderful atmosphere, Kerry’s biggest triathlon was another huge success.

The sun shone down for the event ensuring that spectators and participants got to enjoy the summer this bank holiday weekend.

Over 400 athletes took part in this year’s event including more than 170 triathletes from Kerry who were joined by participants from Cork, Limerick, Dublin and Clare as well as from overseas to take part in the successful sporting event.

Tri Kingdom Come is fast gaining a reputation for introducing new athletes to the sport and almost 50 first time triathletes took part in the Try-a-Tri – a 250m swim, an 8k bike and a 2.5k run. The winner of this year’s Try-a-Tri were Mark Ryall and Martina Lawless both from Tralee.

The Sprint distance event of a 750m swim, a 20k bike and a 5k run was won by local triathlete, Cillian Tierney, in what was a superb win for the Tralee man on home turf (see previous story on Cillian here).

The first female home was Cork’s Amy Wolfe who crossed the finish line in the time of 1.09.36 in her second year in a row to take the woman’s title.

Angie O’Sullivan from Killarney took third place in a time of 1.10.31.

It was a great day for Tralee Triathlon Club with many of the club members performing well on the day to take first place in their age categories including Majella Diskin, Sinead Stafford, and Padraig Kelly.

The first relay team was the Barrett Bombers in a time of 1.02.11 Race Director, John Quilter, says that it was a special day for everyone involved.

“We had good weather, great athletes, a fantastic organising committee and wonderful volunteers and this made for a fantastic event.”

“We want to thank everyone who took part in this year’s event, came out to support it and most of all to the volunteers, the organising committee and the sponsors who made it all possible.” Scroll down for photos…
