LAST Saturday evening the Kerry hurlers were honoured at an awards night for the 2014 season at the Fels Point Hotel.
It was a year of progress for the proponents of the small ball in our county. The senior team won Division 2A of the National league with an 100% record, but unfortunately, even though they were hotly fancied, the hurlers fell short in the final of the Christy Ring Cup to Kildare.
However there was All-Ireland success for the minors who won the B Championship, beating Meath in the final.
Fomer Tipperary minor, David Butler, played with the Kerry senior team last year and maintains it was the best sporting experience of his life.

“They all say to me back home in Tipp what am I doing playing with the Kerry hurlers? But they’ve no idea how good they are down here,” said David Butler.
“We were very unlucky to not win the Christy Ring – maybe we took our eye off it a bit in the final when we had a big lead at half-time – but I’m sure we’ll be back and it won’t be long before we’re playing in the Liam McCarthy,” said Butler
David Butler, currently works as a groundskeeper in Kenmare Golf Club and still plays his club hurling back in Tipp. In 2009 he played minor inter-county hurling alongside Tipperary All Star and one of the top talents in the game, Noel McGrath.
“Going out pucking a ball with Kerry lads, is no different to playing with Noel McGrath, honestly. I think the standard is great and the only way is up,” he said.
