The record attempt at Mercy Mounthawk in progress.

IT was a weird sight from the balcony of the Mercy Mounthawk gym on Friday afternoon as hundreds of students aimed to break a world record.

Hundreds of white-clad figures milled around aiming to break the record of having the most number of ‘ghosts’ in one location and raise funds for the Kerry Branch of Arthritis Ireland.

The call went out for people all over the county and beyond  to donate bedsheets and the good people of Kerry did not disappoint.

Yet it was a Cork launderette who came to the rescue on Friday morning, supplying the final batch of sheets in time for the event.

Some 560 participants were dressed from head to toe in a one-piece white bed sheet with two cut out eye pieces and gathered together in the gym by just before 4pm to stand for five minutes to break the record.

There was elation at the end, but it will take six weeks before the people at Guinness World Records can confirm if all was in order to smash the previous record 0f 263.

Kerry Branch of Arthritis Ireland, a registered charity with the sole responsibility for people living with arthritis, used the event to raise awareness and highlight the ghostly nature of living 24/7 with this chronic and invisible condition.

One in every five people in Ireland are living with one form or another of arthritis. The event was organised by the 4th year TV, Radio and New Media IT Tralee Event Management Class in association with COSY (Community of Social Innovators) in Mercy Mounthawk.

The famous Dubliner “Mattress Mick” (Michael Flynn) whose videos and cult comedy advertising went viral, was also in attendance to lend his support.

Here’s hoping everything is in order and the students will be officially deemed record breakers. Scroll down for photos…
