IT was pretty warm out there on Saturday for the 124 participants in the Tralee Born to Run Marathon Club’s fifth 40 mile ultra marathon event.
The event has gone from strength to strength over the past number of years attracting local runners and top class athletes from all over Ireland and it was another sellout success this year.
The route was over a four mile looped course which took runners from the River Lee walk by the Dan Spring Road towards Lidl and Caherwisheen going out into the countryside by Scotia’s Pillar and Tralee Rugby Club before returning to town by Ballyard.

Participants, who came from all over Kerry and indeed the country, had the option of taking on the elite 40 mile ultramarathon or as part of a two person (20/20 miles) or a four-person relay team (12/8 miles x2).
It is a not-for-profit event and all proceeds raised this year went to St Ita’s and St Joseph’s Special School in Tralee for children with mild learning disabilities.
There were medals for all finishers and place awards for the first, second and third male and female across the finish line on the day. For all the results click here
Brian O’Shea of the Born To Run Club said they were delighted with the day.
“We’re absolutely delighted, everyone who came seems to have had a good day. They enjoyed the route and the atmosphere and they praised the volunteers. We had a whole committee working together for what would be a mammoth task, but when each of worked together it made it much easier.”
With many travelling to the event, the event is also good for Tralee.
“Many of those who travelled from outside the county to participate will stay here and spend money contributing to the local economy. People are coming back year after year as the event grows,” said Brian.
He also said the club was very conscious of their environmental responsibilities.
“We’ve have our recycling bags and we do a route clean-up if needed, although if anyone is seen discarding bottles or rubbish they are automatically disqualified from the race. We’re looking after our own area and the environment. When you organise an event all that should be left after you is a footprint and the memories,” said Brian.
Born To Run wished to thank all the sponsors without whom it would not be possible to host the event. They also thanked Vincent, Catherine and Lyndsey Guthrie for doing the timing on the day. Scroll down for photos…
