Continuing our review of stories we brought you in 2018, here’s the news from November…

• KERRY may have been eliminated at the Super 8 stage of the All-Ireland series but it was enough to earn one young man an All-Star.

David Clifford’s star turns, especially in the games against Galway, Kildare and Monaghan, saw him win the accolade in the right corner forward position.

• THE Labour party selected three candidates to stand in the Tralee area at next year’s local elections..

At the convention held in the Brandon Hotel, Tralee, Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Graham Spring and Cllr Terry O’Brien were joined on the ticket by local activist and former President of IT Tralee Students Union, Ben Slimm who is contesting his first election.

• IRISH Water and Kerry County Council marked the official opening of the Kerry Central Regional Water Treatment Plant near Lough Guitane.

This €30 million upgrade to improve treatment facilities, ensured a safe and secure water supply for almost half the population of Co Kerry.

Over 62,000 people and an estimated 1.2m tourists annually are supplied from the Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme which serves one of the main tourist regions in Ireland including, Killarney, Tralee, Castleisland and Castlemaine.

• A TRALEE woman went on Winning Streak and scooped a cool €28,000 from the National Lottery TV gameshow on RTÉ One.

Rose Roche, who lives in Blennerville, stated she had no nerves at all ahead of her Winning Streak appearance in November.

• THE Tralee Municipal District Operations Department has approved a plan to mark the location where the Rose of Tralee festival was founded.

Cllr Norma Foley put forward a motion at the Tralee MD meeting that, in advance of the 60th anniversary of the festival next August, a plaque should be erected at the old Harty’s Bar on Castle Street (now Baily’s Corner).

This is to be done in co-operation with the building’s owners, the Rose of Tralee International Festival and all interested parties.

• FENIT and Kilrush RNLI were involved in the multi-agency search and rescue operation for a windsurfer who was missing at sea for seven hours from Ballybunion and ended up in Kilkee.

The windsurfer had managed to make it ashore and raise the alarm with a member of the public.

He was subsequently transferred by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick. The windsurfer had managed to travel by sea the 25 nautical miles from Ballybunion to Kilkee in County Clare.

• THERE was great sadness around the county and beyond  at the passing of Weeshie Fogarty.

Weeshie was the voice of Kerry sport for many years on Radio Kerry and tributes poured in from all over the country for the Killarney man.

Radio Kerry General Manager Fiona Stack paid tribute to Weeshie saying his influence on Radio Kerry and the promotion of sports is immeasurable, but his legacy is also that of a gentleman who was supportive and kind to all he encountered.

• CLLRS Pa Daly and Toireasa Ferris will be Sinn Fein’s candidates in the local elections for the Tralee Electoral Area next year.

Sinn Féin members met in the River Island Hotel in November to select candidates to go forward for next years local elections in the Tralee Municipal District.

Nominations for sitting councillors Pa Daly and Toireasa Ferris were the only ones received for Tralee.

• IT was revealed 20 of the 50 jobs announced a few months ago in Sigmar Recruitment have been filled. The news came as the company launched its European Talent Hub in Liber House, Monavalley.

They are looking to seek candidates to fill the rest of the positions as international recruiters.  A Tralee man, Shaun O’Shea, is the Sigmar Head of European Recruitment in charge at the hub.

• THERE were hundreds of people packed into the Square as the lights were turned on to officially begin the Christmas season on Tralee.

Mayor of Tralee Cllr Graham Spring was joined by Rose of Tralee Kirsten Mate Maher and Tralee Chamber Alliance President Aidan Kelly as they pulled the lever to light up Tralee.

• TRALEE is to receive  €289,000 for improvements to Bridge Street, Rock Street and Russell Street.

Minister Griffin said: “For Tralee, this latest funding boost that I am announcing today will help to continue the excellent work that has already been carried out on Denny Street and The Mall, with €289,000 being allocated to go towards works on Bridge Street, Rock Street and Russell Street.”
