IF your child is starting school this September, then a visit to Caherleaheen this coming week is definitely worth considering as they are holding an open week every morning from 9am to 10.30am, Monday to Friday.

Caherleaheen  National School is a vibrant, active and busy school with almost 200 boys and girls, 7 Class teachers, 4 Learning Support teachers and 5 assistants.

“The children here are fantastic. We nurture an open, warm, friendly yet firm relationship with all our kids. It can be both exciting and heart-breaking to see them leave after eight years here,” said Principal Mary Connolly.

“We know them so well and all their various achievements fill us with pride. This week, prospective parents are invited to call in to see us in action,” said Mary.

It’s a nice informal opportunity to meet Mary Connolly and get a ‘feel’ for the school.

“The teachers here do an amazing job tailoring curricular programmes to ensure that all children achieve to the best of their ability as well as meeting their social and emotional needs,” added Mary.

“There are so many challenges facing kids these days: social media and its associated dangers and anxieties. We take these challenges seriously and regard parents as our partners. Without them, a lot of what we have achieved these last few years would not have been possible.

Our standardised testing scores in Literacy and Numeracy are consistently above average each year. Parents and children value and support all our initiatives such as Literacy lift Off, Aistear, SPHE, STEM, Physical health initiatives, Community or religious engagements and anything we throw at them really!”

“The teaching and assistant staff are the backbone- a real team. We collaborate and share teaching strategies, as well as engaging in continuous professional training.  Teachers keep learning too, not just our pupils! It’s a great school, nestled in a beautiful rural setting, just 2km south of Tralee town. We are extremely proud of  every child who walks through our doors, each day,” said Mary.
