ST. BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL CLUB NOTES

Boys U14 Div 2 Plate

St. Brendan’s 27 St. Paul’s 36
The U14 Boys B team played St. Pauls of Killarney in Tralee last Sunday morning in Round 2 of the cup. A win was required in order to progress and St. Brendan’s were out to seek revenge for a defeat handed to them by the same opposition earlier in the season. The game got off to a blistering start with two good baskets from Jack Doyle (Gaelscoil) levelling the score at four points each in the opening minutes.

This was followed up with further baskets from Andrew Wallace and Coren Hughes, each of which was initiated by excellent defensive play from Cian Griffin. Jack Doyle scored a further point from the free point line and Donal O’Sullivan closed the quarter out with an excellent basket leaving the home side leading by 15 points to 6.

St. Brendan’s’ were determined to keep the momentum going in the second quarter and started brightly with baskets from Andrew Wallace, Jack Doyle (Gaelscoil) and Dean Farrell. Shortly thereafter, the visiting team began to settle and registered a series of unanswered points resulting in the teams being neck and neck at half time with St. Pauls holding a one point lead (21-22).

Coren Hughes scored the opening basket of quarter three, however despite the best defensive efforts of Jack Doyle (Scoil Eoin) and Simon Carey, the visitors pulled ahead.

The boys battled bravely and left nothing after them with Jack Doyle having to be substituted as a result of a collision with his opposite number. Joshua Roche and Fiachra O’Connor were introduced to help steady the ship but the opposition proved too strong and outscored the home team, resulting in a lead of 9 points at the end of the third quarter (23-32).

Quarter four was a more even affair with both sides scoring four points each.  Both Tom Flavin and Donal O’Sullivan registered points from the free throw line and Andrew Wallace topped off a great performance with another ‘two pointer’. However, it wasn’t meant to be and the game ended with St. Pauls running out winners on a score line of 27-36.

The Killarney boys had a superior height advantage over our boys and at the end of the day this gave them the edge.  Well done to one and all for a valiant battle.
BOYS U11 Academy Cup

St. Pauls 7 St. Brendan’s 46
St. Brendan’s U11s defeated St Paul’s, Killarney in the 1st round of the Academy Cup last Tuesday in the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre on a final scoreline of 46-7.

Mark Lynch, Conor Lucey & Liam Óg O’Connor got Brendan’s off to a flying start and they continued to dominate from there on. Brendan’s led 19-5 at half time and were able to bring in some of the younger players for the 2nd half. Our U10 players Brayden, Thomas, Jack & Dara were impressive and all made a great impact scoring 16pts between them.
BOYS U10 Blitz

The Blitz held in Cumann Ioseaf last Sunday saw St. Brendan’s U10s put in a great performance. They started a little bit slow and under pressure but were quick to get going in their games.

Jack Canty led from the front that allowed Brendan’s to play some great defense. The team ranged in age from 7 to 10 years put together tremendous performance and a great display of teamwork. This led to a number of baskets and fantastic defence in both games. St. Brendan’s U10s campaign is still going strong and the players are improving week-by-week and game-by-game.

Winning the first and second game has given Brendan’s fierce confidence moving into the next blitz. We look forward to building on our success over the coming weeks. Well done to all the boys who put in a great effort today. Thank you to all our supporters who came to see the boys in action. Here’s to the next game…

TRALEE WARRIORS

The Tralee Warriors got their Superleague campaign back on track with a thrilling win over Commercial.ie Eanna last Saturday in Tralee. The Warriors led by just a point at half time but managed to secure some more valuable League points by holding out for a 4 point win 78-74. Fergal O’Sullivan top scored for the Tralee side and with Goran Pantovic and Ryan Leonard also in good shooting form the Warriors’ hopes of playoffs later this season are very much alive. We wish them the very best of luck as they continue with Superleague duty on Saturday night in Tralee when they take on UCD Marian. Tip off is at 8.00pm so make sure you get there early.
