Juveniles

Last Sunday saw the curtains come down on a very busy and successful Academy for 2018. We hope all our kids and their parents/guardians enjoyed it as much as we have. Our future stars were presented with certificates of achievement for their endeavours throughout Acadamh Peile 2018 by the respective head coaches, Fiona Costello (U6), Sean Daly (U8) and Seamus Murphy (U10). We hope that your family will return in January 2019 and that each child will keep practicing in the interim.

Thanks to all the coaches, mentors, parents and helpers who worked hard during the year. Until 2019…….

U6: 10 brave under 6s turned up not afraid to get wet this morning!! Weren’t they glad! After a short fun session of games and chase & evasion drills we had a short match. Dylan Murphy showed his tough determination with tough blocks and speed. He deservedly won the trophy for player of the week for his efforts. Cillian Enright again wowed is all with his solo skills. The girls all have really come on in confidence and speed. Well done to Grace Costello for her evasion tactics!

The excitement was huge when we made a run for the club house to find ‘The Fox’! There were treats galore and certificates for all. Well done to all the players throughout the year we have certs for you all & will try and get them to you over the coming weeks!
Thanks so much to all the parents for helping out with the under 6s, to Fiacc Murphy for taking the sessions when I was away and Michael Higgins, Norma Flynn, Cormac Kane, Johnny Enright and James Costello for all their help. Thanks to Craig for the fun session of ship /deck/ sea today! I certainly couldn’t do it without you.

All year our aims have been to get children fit and active while having fun, ball skills have really improved with practice & confidence. Keep up the interest and practice at home. The academy will have a short break until the indoor season in January. We hope that as many parents as possible can attend our evening in the Rose hotel on the 2nd November to make plans for next year’s development.
Watch this space for a Christmas party for under 6s & under 8s!

U8: “Thanks kids, for being the reason, we got to coach another season. Who was more nervous that very first day? You just learning, or we who must teach you to play.”

Another season of the Academy for our under-8’s was completed last Sunday when after a good session all our players were presented with certificates to acknowledge their participation and progress during the year.

That Sunday back in January when we assembled in Cumann Iosaef for the first session of 2018 seems so long ago now and we have had a session practically every Sunday since then. Some of the highlights include moving from indoor to outdoor sessions in March, participating in the Kerry GAA Blitz in April along with a Blitz hosted by Kerins O’Rahillys. In May we hosted our own U8 blitz which was followed in June with a blitz in Ardfert. Holiday season kicked in for a few weeks in July and then most of our players took part in the annual Cúl camp followed immediately by a bus trip to Ballybunion to play Beale. The annual John Mitchells blitz took place in September and we were well represented in that blitz.

So well done to all our young players for their commitment and enthusiasm. To their parents we send our thanks for getting the players to the Sunday sessions and to the various other activities. Looking forward to the 2019 season already!

U10: The current U10s had a light training for the last time this year last Sunday under the watchful eyes of their trainers after which the older players participated in the U12/14 blitz and acquitted themselves very well. After the blitz, all players were treated to light refreshments and they were issued with St Pats certs for the great progress they made with their football skills during the year. Huge credit is due to the players for the effort and commitment they gave during the year being involved in many blitzes and tournaments including the ones we hosted, the training sessions both indoors and outdoors, their involvement in the Cúl camp last August and many more. The U10 management team of Seamus Murphy & Conor Culloo would like to thank them all. We also wish the players moving on to U 12’s all the best and we look forward to watching them all continue to progress in their football development in 2019.

U12/14: Last Sunday saw the Juvenile Academy come to a close for 2018 with an U12/14 internal blitz. Despite the wet conditions, we were able to field 4 sides divided into Red, Green, Blue and Orange. The standard of play was high and it was great to see some great skills on display. Thanks to the older U10’s that also played for a bit and gave a good account of themselves. At the end of the blitz, the red team came out tops and were awarded a trophy for their efforts. Thanks to our Club Chairman Jimmy Mulligan, Juvenile Chairperson Marie Fitzgibbon, the coaches and mentors, parents who provided refreshments, the referees and everyone who contributed towards making the blitz a success. Hopefully this will be an annual event.

Seniors

Our seniors had a good win over fancied Na Gaeil last Sunday in the semi-finals of the Lee Strand St. Brendans Football Board Senior Football Championship 2018 played under windy conditions last Sunday evening. Playing with a mixed team of experience and youth, we were on the back foot for most of the first half as the home team stormed to a 0-7 to 0-3 lead at the short whistle. We made some changes at the start of the 2nd half and it paid dividends when we hit the back of the net after 5 minutes and added a couple of points to draw level after 10 minutes of the half played. We grew in confidence and started utilising the ball better which translated into points on the board and the turning point came towards the end of the half when a ball that was sailing over the bar for a point was deflected into the net in an attempt to save it to put us 2 ahead with only 4 minutes of normal time to go. Na Gaeil pulled a point back but we held on for a win on a scoreline of 2-08 to Na Gaeil’s 13 points.

This win sees us through to the final where we await the winners of the other semi-finals between Ardfert and Churchill. Details of the final is yet to be decided.
