St Pats deservedly won the Division 3 Promotion play-off against Annascaul last Sunday. The match played in dry but slightly windy conditions in Milltown, perfectly suited for a game of football, didn’t disappoint as it was full of high intensity, skills and threatened to boil over on a number of occasions with 5 yellow cards dished out to Annascaul and 2 to St Pats.

St Pats got on to the score sheet as early as the first minute from Willie Hurley after receiving an inch perfect pass from David O’Callaghan. David registered his first point of the match on the 4th minute and doubled his tally a minute later.

Kieran Hurley also pointed after 7 minutes from a free. Play was stopped for a few minutes shortly afterwards after what looked like a fair shoulder tackle by Liam O’Sullivan on Niall McKenna but the free taken by Annascaul’s James Crean was easily gathered by Kerry Minor player, Kieran Dwyer. St Pats further stretched their lead to 5 points after David O’ Callaghan converted a free.

The lead would have been increased by another three points when Willie Hurley threw the ball into the net after getting clear of his marker, Gearoid O’Shea. Veteran, Liam Poff added to the St Pats tally by pointing from long range to lead by 6 points after just fifteen minutes of play. Annascaul’s first point of the match came a minute later from a free taken by James Crean.

It was all one-way traffic at this stage and St Pats domination of the game further paid dividends when a high ball from Jordan Conway into Annascaul’s danger area was well fielded by Willie Hurley, who turned and buried the ball past Tommy Pierce. Emmett Kennedy scored Annascaul’s second point of the match with a reflex bicycle kick with his back to goal on 22 minutes and this was followed by a point from a free taken by James Crean. Points from Liam O’Sullivan, Brendan Poff and Willie Hurley left the half time scores at St Pats 1-09 Annascaul 0-03.

Annascaul started the second half with the intention to stem the tide but their attacks were warded off by the St Pats backline, who collectively defended very well. The first point of the half came after 36 minutes from a free taken by James Crean.

St Pats second goal was an individual goal scored by dual player, Jordan Conway, who took on the Annascaul defence line and slotted the ball past the onrushing goal-keeper, much to the delight of the well-travelled supporters. James Crean again got on the score sheet with a well taken point from play and then added 3 more, all from frees in between points from Luke Mulligan, Liam O’ Sullivan and David O’Callaghan.

The last couple of points were scored by Annascaul’s Alan Falvey from play, and a free from David Clifford with the scores at full time being St Pats 2-11 Annascaul 0-10. It was a collective team performance by the panel and was spearheaded by David O’Callaghan, Liam O’Sullivan, Jeffrey Foley, Willie Hurley and Jordan Conway. James Crean was the star performer for Annascaul as he scored 7 of his team’s 10 points.

The result sees St Pats promoted to Division 2 after some very good performances during the season, capped by this great display, especially in the first half.

We are playing in the final of the Lee Strand St.Brendan Board Senior Football League against Ballymac this Sunday, the 9th of October in Blennerville. Throw-in is at 12 noon. In the event of a draw, extra time will be played.
