Abbey Inn To Mark 20th Anniversary Of Famous ‘Janus’ Events

.
DJ Eibhlin.

AN event is taking place in The Abbey Inn on St Stephens Night which is definitely one for the dance music purists, with the legendary Mark Kavanagh and internationally renowned Tralee woman DJ Eibhlin, appearing at the venue.

Back in 1997, nightclubs in Tralee were still adjusting to the new reality that dance music was king among young people on a night out and playing chart hits and slow sets were becoming a thing of the past.

A few Tralee folk got together and decided to stage three huge dance music events under the ‘Janus’ moniker in locations just outside the town.

Two were held in Mountain Lodge out in Curraheen and one in the Earl of Desmond with hundreds packing out the venues on each occasion.

Well they’ve decided to get the ‘band’ back together for one night only with some of those who played the gigs 20 years ago reunited to celebrate the anniversary.

It’s a stellar line-up with Mark Kavanagh, DJ Eibhlín, Billy Nasty, Jonno Brien, Marq Walsh, DJ Stacky, John O’Loughlin and Jason Fitz playing tunes for the masses.

It kicks off pretty early in the evening at 7.30pm and continue until the wee hours. For tickets at €10 go to B-Mobile on Dominick Street.

2. Get out to folk…

Leo O'Kelly
Leo O’Kelly

Fans of folk music are in for a special treat when a prominent figure from the scene back in the early 1970s comes to the Tralee stage on Saturday night.

Leo O’Kelly was a member of the Irish folk duo Tír na nÓg with Sonny Condell, who, with Pentangle and Nick Drake, were considered the forebears of progressive folk.

The duo split up in 1973 with Leo turning producer, before releasing a series of solo records.

He reunited with Condell for Tír na nÓg’s first album in 42 years in 2015 with ‘The Dark Dance’ which was received enthusiastically by fans and critics.

Now he’s on his way to Courthouse Lane upstairs in The Acoustic Room at Il Forno Restaurant.  Tickets are €15 and booking is essential on 066-7195402.

3. Rock out for charity…

If folk music isn’t your thing, get in touch with your inner mosher as The Abbey Inn hosts a night of rock music for a great cause.

People are encouraged to dress up for the weekend that’s in it and help raise funds for Bru Columbanus and the Kerry Coronary Care Unit. Tickets are €10 and it’s well worth going if you’re into your decent rock music. The night begins at 9pm.

Sunday

4. Na Gaeil’s big day…again…

All roads lead to Killarney for the Oakpark club’s Junior Premier Club Championship Final. Na Gaeil probably should have capitalised on their numerical advantage against Glenbeigh/Glencar in the drawn game two weeks ago.

They’ll find it tough against the Mid-Kerry side so they’ll need all the support they can get in Fitzgerald Stadium. Throw-in is at 2.30pm. Should they do it, it’ll be some evening in the Killeen clubhouse.

It costs €8 per child and you get a goodie bag and they’ll be prizes for best costumes.

A LOCAL writers group held a special event in The Abbey Inn last night to encourage local singer/songwriters, poets and writers to take to the stage to air their work.

The Thursday Night Writers Group started last summer and meet weekly upstairs at the Abbey from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. They decided to put on something different last week and held the open mic night on Friday.

“We’re writers, poets, songwriters, screenwriters and we meet each week to share feedback and it’s a social gathering as much as a writing group,” said Barbara Lovric from the group. “Tonight we decided to expand it to the general public and ask everyone artistically inclined to come down and give a performance. It’s just an alternative thing to do on a Friday night,” said Barbara.

“I’m delighted with the turnout tonight and hopefully we can build on this and hold another event in the near future. I think Tralee is looking for something different. If you’re going to the pub, why not go to the pub and listen to great writing or great singing,” she added.

Atheist Ireland

ATHEIST Ireland will hold their second information table in Tralee, this Saturday from 12 midday in The Square.

The group will also hold an open meeting in the Abbey Inn at 2:30pm.

At the meeting, several issues will be discussed including, education and faith schools and Atheist Ireland’s schools Equality Pact.

There will also be an opportunity for questions on the challenges as Atheist Ireland sees them and the best solutions for them.

Michael Nugent Chair of Atheist Ireland will be speaking as will Jane Donnelly of “Teach don’t preach” and  Peter Hinchliffe, local organiser for Atheist Ireland in  Kerry.

Atheist Ireland sees this as an opportunity to come and find out more about the group. They have invited local politicians to attend to give an insight into the group and what they’re all about.

Since 2008, Atheist Ireland has been providing a platform for people who wish to work together to build a rational, ethical and secular society free from superstition and supernaturalism.

Athiest Ireland are looking to build on a small local group, to find people interested in joining the group or simply in getting in touch and maybe attending  the monthly secular Sunday Brunch they hold in Tralee which is open to all people with an interest in secularism.

THERE’S no end to the changes in our bars and restaurants around town and The Abbey Inn is the latest hostelry to revamp their business.

The bar on the right hand side is now closed for refurbishment and when it reopens it will be a cafe bar with a ‘funky’ feel to it, totally closed off from the other bar.

“We’re calling it ‘House’. It’s going to be a funky cafe open seven days a week with a new name over the door and a separate entrance from the Square side,” said Danny Leane Jnr.

“It’ll be a cafe – with a new menu – during the day and on Fridays and Saturdays we’ll be doing evening meals. Then, after 9pm on weekends, we’ll have cocktails and Prosecco on tap with chilled out and funky music for an older crowd,” said Danny, who also said the smoking area on the outside will be extended all the way around the corner towards the Square side.

Work is continuing and it is hoped to have ‘House’ in order for a Friday opening next week.

THE Abbey Inn played host to another great night of fundraising on Wednesday night.

The quiz in aid of Kerry Hospice and the Marymount Hospice in Cork drew a large number of tables thanks to Leith resident, Sarah O’ Donnell, who wanted to organise the event to help out the two organisations which are very close to her heart.

“It was absolutely fantastic. I was blown away by the response on the night,” said Sarah. “We managed to raise about €700 which is absolutely brilliant. We had about 18 full tables, the Abbey Inn reckons that the biggest they’ve ever had is eight tables, so we’ve certainly beaten that anyway. It’s been a massive success,” said Sarah.

There were plenty of spot prizes available on the night which had been kindly donated by over 20 different Kerry businesses.

Couple this with the good crowd on the night and you had yourself a great event for a fantastic cause.

VIDEO: Gary Funks Up Hozier And Goes Viral Again

White Boys are from left, Eoin Walsh and Gary Keane.

TRALEE musician, Gary Keane, has produced a cover version of Hozier’s, ‘Take me to Church’ as part of the cork based neo-soul duo White Boys and it’s getting a lot of attention (see video below).

Gary and his partner in funk, Eoin Walsh, who is from Cork, have knocked out another hip-hop enthused retro track that has garnered attention online.

The cover which was released to the public through the White Boys numerous social media accounts on Monday is almost unrecognisable to the original, something, Gary Keane tells us, was fully intended.

“We’re doing music that is a lot closer to my heart, we wanted to totally throw the Hozier track upside down just to see how people would react to it and it’s going really well so far,” said Gary.

Last month, their ‘Family Values’ video which lampooned an anti-gay marriage rant on the Vincent Browne Live Debate show was picked up by national media and the international online gay community.

“That got a class response, I couldn’t believe that! It was good, because that put our name in the mind of a lot of press,” said Gary.

All this promotion is leading up in anticipation of the act’s debut single release ‘Stylin’ at the end of June. Quite appropriately they’re launching ‘Stylin’ at the after party of Chic’s ‘Live at the Marquee’ show in Cork.

Perhaps legend of disco and Chic founder, Nile Rodgers, will be there to give his blessing…

Tralee audiences will have a chance to catch White Boys, they’re playing in the Abbey Inn on dates, May 30, June 20 and July 4. Free admission.

THREE Tralee groups have been given  awards for their colourful exploits at this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade.

The local associations that scooped an award each were, The Redeemed Church of Christ, Tralee Musical Society and the Tralee Filipino Community.

All the awards were sponsored by Tralee Credit Union and handed out at the Abbey Inn on Monday night.

“This year was one of the best parades we’ve ever had, we had great weather and a great crowd” said member of the Tralee St Patrick’s Day parade committee, Johnnie Wall.

“The parade itself took an hour and twenty minutes to pass the viewing stand which means it was a huge parade and one of the biggest we’ve ever had,” said Johnnie.

This year’s parade featured four bands along plenty of other entertainment, music and local sporting clubs showing their colours with pride.

“We had Sam as well in the parade, but he’s a fairly regular visitor!” said Johnnie.

Leading the parade was current Kerry Rose, Mary Hickey.

With the theme of the parade being ‘Active Tralee’, Marcus Howlett, founder of the ‘Run The Kingdom’ company, accepted a special award for the Tralee International Marathon.
