AFTER the switching on of the Christmas lights in town last week, festive spirits were lifted once again this evening as the Christmas tree in Ballygarry was lit up.

Every year Ballygarry House Hotel invites locals and guests to attend a “turning on the lights ceremony” where guests come out for an evening of mulled wine, mince pies & music and of course Santa Claus was always there to meet all the young girls and boys.

This year, of course, was different though. Padraig McGillicuddy, speaking at the ceremony, said; “We knew it was going to be different this year as unfortunately due to COVID this event was not allowed to go ahead. So the team here came up with a wonderful idea.

.

“We ran a recent Facebook competition to pick one lucky family to come out and meet Santa and also turn on the Ballygarry Tree lights. We also wanted to kick off some Christmas goodwill and raise money for local charity Enable Ireland – so we collaborated with our Facebook and Instagram followers and donated one euro per shares and we got a great response raising over €800 for Enable Ireland, which my niece, Aoise Healy is very involved in.”

.

The winners of the competition were the O’Flaherty family from Ballymac and they duly pressed the button to light up the tree.

The famous Ballygarry Christmas tree has become well known in Tralee and surrounding areas due to its location at the gateway to the town and of course its imposing size.

Remaining very upbeat through this second lockdown Padraig McGillicuddy said it’s “a beacon for hope in such a difficult year and a shining light for 2021 to lift everyone from the COVID gloom and get everyone in the Christmas spirit”.

“We are looking forward to a busy December & re-opening our hotel so we can get our full team of staff back into work. We want to thank everyone for their well wishes & support throughout the past year.” added Padraig.

Five Things To Do From Christmas Eve To St Stephen’s Day

.

Christmas is finally here and people will enjoy a well-earned break from work. But  for anyone who wants to escape the house between now and Monday afternoon, let’s see what you can get up to…

1. Enjoy the Christmas atmosphere…

There’s nothing like going to town on Christmas Eve and meeting up with friends and family. The atmosphere is special everywhere, especially in the pubs which shut early so people head home in good spirits rather than fall in the door.

.

2. Take a dip…

Christmas Day for many starts with a dip in the Atlantic and there’s a couple of dashes to the ocean going on close to Tralee.

The Fenit one, in aid of the RNLI, starts at 12 noon and is the biggest in the county with upwards of 800 people regularly taking part.

For slightly later risers, the Banna swim, in aid of Banna Rescue takes place at 12.30pm, so if you want to blow off the cobwebs from the few sherrys on Christmas Eve, take a dip.

3. Walk off the turkey…

Join Michael ‘Fox’ O’Connor and friends for the annual Bill Kirby Memorial Walk on St Stephen’s Day. It starts at the Brogue Inn at 11.30am but the fun and entertainment beings at 11am. If you don’t want to walk, run it with members of the Born To Run club.

4. Or run it off at the rugby club…

Tralee Rugby Club is hosting its annual St Stephen’s Day 3k & 5k Fun Run in aid of their underage development.

Registration for the run takes place at 12.15pm with the run beginning at 1pm. It costs €5 for children/students, €10 for adults and €20 max for a family.

The Fun Run precedes the annual Tralee RFC v Exiles rugby match which kicks off at 2pm and promises as ever to be an entertaining afternoon with some “golden oldies” hinting at making an appearance this year.

5. Soccer fun in Marian Park…

Another great event to support on St Stephen’s day is the 2016 Daniel Coffey Memorial Tournament.

Taking place at Marian Park pitch from 10.30am, the tournament celebrates a talented footballer, Daniel Coffey, who sadly passed away a few years ago and was first held in 2014.

The tournament will be two semifinals and a final, and a possible 3rd place play off. While the teams have been named, anyone who isn’t in the four teams, but wants to play, can just come along on Monday morning at 10.30am to Marian Park Soccer pitch and they’ll fit you in a team.

Supporters are welcome and there will be a collection for charity on the day.

It was a fantastic family event with Santa Claus and friends pulling out all the stops to entertain the families on the day. Here’s some more images from the parade…

I hope you all – our readers and advertisers – have a very happy Christmas and thanks for your support. – Dermot Crean, Editor

Four Things To Do Between Christmas Eve And St Stephen’s Day

The next couple of days may be a time to spend with family, pigging out on chocolates and arguing over the telly, but there’s still a few things you can get up to in the outside world…

Christmas Eve

Take in the atmosphere

An Post 1
An Post workers and friends will be singing outside Penney’s for charity on Christmas Eve.

There’s nothing like meeting up with friends on Christmas Eve in town where the festive atmosphere is always special.

If you’re passing Penney’s between 2.30 and 5pm you might also give generously to the An Post workers and friends who’ll be carol singing in aid of the Palliative Care Unit.

Then go for a coffee or something stronger, sitting by the window to watch shoppers – well, disorganised men really – frantically rushing to buy last minute gifts.

Then head home early for quality time with family.

Work Up An Appetite For The Turkey

There’s nothing like the atmosphere out in Fenit on Christmas Day for the annual swim.

The swim will take place at 12 noon and will begin with the traditional singing of Jingle Bells and then Santa will sound the bell for for the first of 3 dashes into the water.

St Stephen’s Day

Traditional walk remembers Bill

Join Michael ‘Fox’ O’Connor and friends for the annual Bill Kirby Memorial Walk on St Stephen’s Day.

It starts at the Brogue Inn at 11.30am but the fun and entertainment beings at 11am. Music and refreshments will be provided and donations are accepted on the day for Palliative Care in Kerry General Hospital.

The four mile walk will depart from the Brogue Inn at 11:30am, up Rock Street over to the Bracker Regan Road, down Caherslee than back to The Rock through Pembroke Street.

Running At The Rugby Club

If there’s still a bit of the turkey to run off you can head up to Tralee Rugby Club.

They’re having their inaugural 3k/5k fun run which will get underway 1pm and be followed by ‘Home v Exiles’ match which kicks off at 2:30pm.

After the match, players and attendees will get a chance to catch up even more at the clubhouse where there will be refreshments and spot prizes.

Scrooge’s Inaugural ‘Christmas In Tralee’ Quiz

By Guest Editor, Ebenezer McScrooge

And so this is Christmas. And what have you done? No, seriously what have you done with your Christmas jumper and big ’12 Pubs of Christmas’ head on ya?!

So how well do you know festive behaviour in Tralee? Here’s some conversations we overheard in town over the past couple of days. Can you guess what they’re talking about…

Xmas jumper
Cryptic Clue 1.

1. “Oh, are you heading out in that? You’ll really stand out with the reindeer motif and snow in the background! You’re soooo wacky, I bet nobody else will be wearing anything like it in town tonight! Women will fall at your feet, because it just screams ‘I’ve got an ironic sense of humour, charm and devil-may-care attitude towards life’.”

Is the person wearing:

(a) a Christmas jumper

(b) an actual reindeer

(c) something obvious and boring…same as (a) then

Ham-DSC_0057
Cryptic Clue 2.

2. “Ok, so you pop it into a saucepan the size of a cheese vat. Pour in eight gallons of Devil’s Bit cider, some cloves, a lemon, an onion, an old boot, a Christmas tree and a small fox. Boil it for four days, pour some melted cheese, Castrol GTX and honey on it. Set it on fire and slice with a Black and Decker chainsaw while grinning inanely.”

Is this sanity-dodging miscreant talking about cooking:

(a) a Christmas ham

(b) a Christmas turkey

(c) dinner for the Italian, Swedish and Belgian football teams before they play Ireland in June

3. “Right so, we’ll meet in Hennessy’s wearing our Christmas jumpers and NO exceptions this year ‘boring’ Barry ok?! We’ll move from pub to pub, all the while getting more lairy and stupid as the more insecure alpha males among us fight for attention. We’ll bump off other people and generally annoy the shit out them with our loud boorish behaviour and finish off the night with some casual vomiting on Bridge Street.”

Are they planning:

(a) 12 pubs of Christmas

(b) training for the north Kerry championship

(c) just a regular Saturday night on the town

4. “Ok you have to help me. I need something special, gift-wrapped, kinda expensive-looking but, y’know not that dear like! Something that says ‘I like you a lot, but we’re not getting engaged soon or anything’. Shit! I shouldn’t have left it this late!”

Is this Lothario buying:

(a) a gift for the girlfriend on Christmas Eve

(b) some peace over Christmas

(c) drugs

5. Paul: “I haven’t seen you in ages bye! What you been up to in Trinity?”

Sean: “So roysh! Me and the goys are having moighty laughs going for scoops…”

Paul: “Whoa! Whoa! Sean, you’ve been in Dublin for two months. What’s the story with the accent like?

Sean: “Nooo idea what you’re talking about. And besides, the name’s Tarquin now.”

Is this:

(a) two friends catching up after being separated by college

(b) two friends about to have a fight

(c) a debacle of the highest proportions

• What with me being Scrooge and everything, there’s no prizes for getting them all right…bah Humbug!

ON Thursday, the St Vincent de Paul store on Friary Lane gave thanks to their customers by holding an appreciation day for the people who donate and shop there.

For the day, staff dressed up in Christmas gear and fifth pupils from Holy Family Primary School displayed their caroling abilities with updated versions of festive hits.

“We are very fortunate that we have people of Tralee donating stuff and buying in the shops, so this is a way of giving thanks for that,” said Junior Locke of St Vincent de Paul.

The day was also a chance for Mrs Dempsey’s Holy Family fifth class singers to belt out a few numbers to the public an opportunity they relished.

“This is lovely to do because the pupils are getting to their holidays and they’re really relaxed,” said Holy Family teacher, Claire Dempsey.

“It will encourage their own families to come down and buy things from St Vincent de Paul, which is lovely for the shop,” she said.

PROUD parents looked on at Presentation Primary School on Wednesday night, as children took part in the school’s Christmas Concert.

A whole host of characters came together from shining stars, to Santas, the cast of The Wizard of Oz and of course, there was a section devoted to the nativity.

It was clear that so much effort had gone into making the costumes as elaborate as possible, that both staff and pupils deserve huge praise for putting on such a great show.

There was a spot for kids of all ages, from the junior to senior classes, which made it a special night for the packed hall.

Scoil Eoin Pupils Get Behind Christmas Shoebox Appeal

Crag Santa Insert
.

ONCE again this year, Scoil Eoin Balloonagh students took part in the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal in association with Samaratin’s Purse.

Samaratin’s Purse is an international Christian relief and development organisation, meeting the critical needs of victims of war, poverty, famine and disease. Putting together the shoeboxes enables them to send a gift directly into the hands of a needy boy or girl in Africa or Eastern Europe.

Launching the Scoil Eoin Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal were, from left, back: Mrs. Carol Anne O’Donoghue Student Council Co ordinator, Aoibheann Griffin, Eimear Litchfield, Mengyao Ni, Katie McEvoy, Grace O’Mahoney and Dan Enright. Front: Matas Balsys, Jake Moriarty, Katie Prendiville, Faith Russell, Ciara O’Mahony and Jack Doyle.

Last year 170,000 shoeboxes were delivered to children in eleven countries including Romania, Transnistria, Kosonva, Ukraine, Albania, Burundi, Congo,Lesotho, Swaziland, Malawi and Kenya! If all the shoeboxes were piled on top of each other, they would be the height of 62 Eiffel Towers.

Thanks to extra donations given in last year’s Shoebox appeal, Team Hope has also been able to fund projects in nine countries in Africa and Eastern Europe.

The students of Scoil Eoin filled old shoe boxes with toys, educational supplies, hygiene items and much more including hats, scarves and clothing. The hardworking Scoil Eoin Student Council members along with their co ordinator Carol Anne O’Donoghue collected and checked all the boxes.

In total this year, Scoil Eoin donated 310 boxes and €921. This simple act of generosity gives hope to children caught in the midst of wars, natural disasters and extreme poverty. Hopefully this will show them that they have not been forgotten.

For some of these children, it will be their first time to receive a present. For these families who are living on less than €1 a day, Christmas is just another ordinary day – nothing special, no Christmas tree, no presents.

But these shoeboxes will bring a little hope, a lot of laughter and smiles for children who have very little. The boxes will be delivered to many countries all across Africa and Eastern Europe. To see videos of the children receiving their shoeboxes last year please log on to Teamhope.ie. Well done to all involved.

IT was a strange feeling around CH Chemists in the warm autumn sunshine on Saturday afternoon, as the staff donned Santa hats and Christmas music played from their PA system.

It was all to launch their Santaland experience which begins on November 28 and who did they get to kick things off?

Well only the man himself, Santa Claus! The curtain in the shop window was pulled back to reveal the man in the big red suit and his trusty sidekick, Elfie as the crowd of young children gasped in excitement.

The duo reminded kids to be very good and showed them some goodies they might receive once they stayed off the naughty list.

Then they were off, back to the North Pole, but not before posing for photos and meeting young fans.

CH Chemists’ Santaland experience is always a huge attraction in town and this year promises to be no different with the fun starting on November 28 and continuing on selected dates until Christmas Eve.

They are taking bookings now so click here on www.chtralee.com/santaland to find out more.

PANTO season gets underway in town today with the opening performance of ‘Aladdin’ in Siamsa Tire.

Oliver Hurley Productions will be taking on the classic Arabian tale, adapted most famously by Disney, with plenty of special effects,  sing-along moments and loads of laughs.

“The cast and the audiences love it. There wasn’t a Christmas panto in Tralee for years until we brought it back around six years ago and it has gone from strength to strength since,” said Aladdin’s director, Oliver Hurley.

“The panto has been selling out every year so hopefully this year will be no different. But we still have tickets for every performance at this point,” said Oliver.

“We’ve a cast of about 80 people and a great cast of leads used to doing panto,” said Oliver.

“You always need a highlight moment in a panto. The big thing we have for audiences this year is a flying carpet sequence which you’ve got to have when doing Aladdin. When we showed it to the cast they were blown away by it, so hopefully the people who come to see us will be even more enthusiastic about it,” said Oliver.

WHILE many young people went off doing the ’12 Pubs Of Christmas’, there’s an altogether different (and far more healthy) alternative.

Adrienne McLoughlin, a regular photography contributor to TraleeToday.ie, went around town on St Stephen’s Day taking snaps of Christmas cribs, 12 to be precise.

“They are all within the town of Tralee,” said Adrienne. “There are probably many more, but some of the smaller churches were closed at the time of my quest on St. Stephen’s Day. My photos don’t do some of them justice, so it’s worth visiting them. Well done to the people who took the time to erect them,” said Adrienne.

You’ll probably feel a lot better by the time you visit the 12th crib than the 12th pub!

kerry airportSIX extra flights have been added to the Ryanair schedule between Kerry and London Luton and London Stansted to accommodate the increased demand from passengers over the Christmas period.

Kerry Airport expects to handle up to 12,000 passengers travelling through the airport from Saturday, December 20 to Sunday, January 4, 2015 covering flights to and from the UK, Dublin and Frankfurt-Hahn.

The Financial Controller at Kerry Airport, Basil Sheerin, said: “It will be business as usual for staff at Kerry Airport before, during and after the Christmas holidays. Extra flights on the Luton and Stansted routes have been scheduled on December 20th, 27th and on January 3rd to cater for the increase in demand.”

The Aer Lingus Regional service between Kerry and Dublin will operate as normal throughout Christmas except there will be no late flight from Dublin on Christmas Eve and there will be no early flight to Dublin on St. Stephen’s Day.

Passengers are advised to allow plenty of time for their journeys and to follow the guidelines set by the airlines in relation to cabin baggage allowances and to have liquids and gels ready for security inspections.

Kerry Airport will be closed on Christmas Day while there will be reduced operating hours on Christmas Eve and St Stephen’s Day.

WHILE people had their lunch in Ballyseedy Garden Centre n Thursday, they were also treated to some festive singing by the pupils of the small Flemby National School.

“We do carol singing every second year and the Ballyseedy Garden Centre are always very good to us and invite us over,” said Paul Roche, Principal of Flemby National School.

Flemby National School is a two teacher co-educational school, located in the parish of Ballymacelligott, about five miles from Tralee.

“Bernie Falvey, who is the owner of Ballyseedy garden centre, her father was involved in building the schoolhouse in Flemby, so there is close ties between us,” said Paul Roche.

Parents were also in attendance and snapped photos of their kids as they belted out the Christmas hits.

“We’re here to bring a bit of Christmas cheer and atmosphere. Yesterday the children were at Kerry Airport singing for people who were returning back home for Christmas,” said Paul.

“We’re a two teacher school so we have a great family atmosphere. We always try and do as much as we can together to keep that community feeling,” he said.

Mario To Impersonate Donaghy? What D’ya Think Of That Kieran?

Credit Union sidebar

IT appears Mario Rosenstock must have some fixation with Kerry people judging by the latest promos for his upcoming RTE special.

In the previews we see the well-known comic doing impressions of Kerry hotelier Francis Brennan of ‘At Your Service’ fame and he also has Dáithí Ó Sé on the show with him.

Now it appears Mario will try to emulate our own Kieran Donaghy’s famous Joe Brolly-baiting interview following the All-Ireland final last year, judging by a tweet (below) from Ian Dempsey this morning.

That image could only be of the Tralee star. We’re wondering who the ‘What d’ya think of that?” comment will be directed at.

We’ll just have to find out what gag he has in store on Christmas Eve on RTE2 at 10pm.

“The choir has grown and grown down the years. We did our first one the year the school opened, It’s one of the really special events in the school calendar,” said Mercy Mounthawk Deputy Principal Pat Fleming.

The concert featured a full choir with a male section. They were led by two teachers, Sinead Muldoon Walsh and Katrina O’Sullivan.

“The choir have put in huge work. Pretty much everyday after school and practically every lunch time for the guts of the last month they have been preparing for tonight,” said Pat Fleming.

“We’re very proud of our choral group, they’ll be entering the Cork Choral Festival again. They came forth last year so they’re really hoping to go a few steps further next year,” he said.

Six Things Johnnie Wall Loves About Christmas

Spraoi insert

Former Mayor of Tralee and current Chairman of Towards A Better Tralee, Johnnie Wall, tells us what he loves about Christmas…

1. The Christmas Spirit In Town

There are many, many things to love about Christmas. One is, without doubt, the Christmas spirit that prevails throughout the month of December. Everybody becomes a friend and people become more generous with their time and money.

Strangers greet you with a cheery Merry Christmas as if they knew you all your life and you get the feeling that everything in the world is right.

2. Christmas Cards

I love the buying and sending of the Christmas cards. To me that ‘chore’ is a really important one as a Christmas card can be the only contact between you and your family and friends in the whole year.

It tells them that you’re thinking of them and you’re wishing them well.

John Ross insert

3. The Decorations

Putting up the decorations and trimming the tree and while all this is going on, you get the aroma of cinnamon, cloves, peeled onions, the ham boiling, sultanas and raisins marinating.

Each of these smells on its own means nothing, but the combination of them all permeating throughout the house is heavenly.

4. The Entertainment

I love watching The Late Late Toy Show, especially in the presence of your children/grandchildren.

I love seeing the look of wonder in the eyes of the small ones and the look of envy in the eyes of the big ones wishing they were that small again!

That show and the Kerry Choral Union Christmas recital on a Sunday evening before Christmas (this year’s event is on this Sunday). Both shows are now a way of showing off the wonderful talent that exists in our town and country and is fast becoming a tradition that cannot be missed.

5. Christmas Eve

Visiting my friends of many years on Christmas Eve before going to town to meet my family for a festive drink. The atmosphere around the town is always electric with people rushing around picking up last minute things like cranberry sauce or cartons of cream that they forgot.

Midnight mass and the feeling of joy to the world.

6. The Day Itself

Christmas day opening the presents, with family and neighbours calling in to wish you a happy Christmas.

Then after a fantastic meal to sit around the table your face aglow with the contented feeling of a man that has just got the news that he has won the lottery.

Later in the evening – after a very relaxing nap – we reminisce about old friends and family that are no longer with us and drink a toast to their memory. I believe that once they’re in our hearts and minds they are never far away and that’s what life is all about.

What a blessed place the world would be if we had the Christmas feeling all year!

“The day brings a lot of colour to the school and gets people ready for the festive season,” said Moira Quinlan, school principal.

As well as the arts and crafts, a cafe was set up selling teas, coffees and hot chocolate – which was the favourite of the day – plus homemade cakes and buns that the children and parents brought in.

Ably assisted by Mayor of Tralee, Jim Finucane, the Mayo native charmed the hundreds who gathered in the Square by thanking them for their well wishes and wishing them all a happy Christmas.

It rounded off a fantastic day of colour and family entertainment with the CH Chemists parade and people stayed to pack the shops buying Christmas presents.

CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, was delighted with how the whole day panned out.

“The parade was fabulous. CH Chemists did a great job, ably assisted by Oliver Hurley and his stage school. Maria Walsh has proved a fabulous draw. She’s a great Rose and  the crowd loves her. The dry weather has helped as well of course,” said Kieran, who emphasised the importance of shopping in town for Christmas.

“Hopefully traders will have a great December. Shop local is the message. One way of maintaining jobs in Tralee for the future is by shopping in Tralee. If we start buying everything online then that’s no good to the town at all,” he said.

A CAMPAIGN that has made Christmas special for hundreds of children over the past number of years, was launched on Friday at a Tralee toy store.

The Caballs St Vincent de Paul Christmas Toy Campaign ensures needy children in town and beyond are visited by Santa on December 25, but they need your help.

“We get  a wish list from children of three things they would like Santa Claus to bring them,” explained Marian Moore, a volunteer at St Vincent de Paul.

Continued below…

Credit Union 600x400

“We try to get one of the toys from the list for them, with the help of Caballs. What happens is people can come into the shop and buy a €10 gift token which Ann [Laide, of Caballs] puts to one side for us. So the more that people donate to that, the less our bill is.”

“For these children, that is their only gift for Christmas, so we try to get something they actually want. We’ve been doing this for five years and so far it has been 100% successful, thanks to Ann and her staff. They’re brilliant,” said Marian.

Toymaster, whom Caballs are affiliated with, used to hold the campaign nationally every year, but this year they aren’t. So Ann Laide made sure that her store would continue the vital campaign.

“I can’t say enough, how delighted I am to be able to help St Vincent de Paul. They’re such brilliant people and they do such great work. The campaign is so important and  if people could help in any way, we would be so grateful,” said Ann.

And so say all of us. If you can spare a tenner to make a local child’s Christmas wish come true, head down to Caballs.

VIDEO: Son Returns From Oz After Three Years To Surprise His Tralee Mammy

John Ross insert

HERE’S something special.

A Tralee mother got a shock last Saturday night, when her son came back from Australia after three years and surprised her at her workplace (see video below).

Susan Curran was working in Cassidy’s Restaurant at the time when her workmates, who were in on the surprise, concocted a story to get her upstairs where 21 year old son Daniel was waiting.

“It was a great surprise because he wasn’t supposed to be home until June for my daughter Natasha’s wedding,” said Susan. “I was only talking to him the week before and he told me he wouldn’t be coming home and he’d be doing travelling over Christmas in Asia,” she continued.

“He gave me a good fright alright. My legs couldn’t stop shaking. The restaurant was packed and everyone was looking on wondering what was going on. One guy said ‘is it your son or what’,'” said Susan from The Meadows, Oakview Village.

Susan had been over to Australia to see Daniel 14 months ago, but his father Pat, a plumber by trade, hadn’t seen him in three years.

“We told him to come down because there was something that needed fixing in the restaurant, so when he arrived and saw Daniel he was in shock,” said Susan.

Daniel and his girlfriend Genevieve Keane, are staying in Ireland until December 30 before heading off again, so it’ll be a happy family Christmas for the Currans this year.

“We’ll have great celebrations. But I have one more daughter in Australia, Amanda, my ‘Care Bear’ I call her, and if she came home it would be complete, but she can’t unfortunately,” said Susan.

The pressure’s on now Amanda!

A TRALEE girl who died last year will be remembered again this December at the second annual Tralee 5Km Santa Fun Run.

The run had a hugely successful debut in 2013 with over 800 participants on the day raising a total of €13,060.44, all of which went towards granting wishes for Kerry children with the Make a Wish Foundation.

This year’s run, on December 14, is in aid of the Ronald McDonald House, Crumlin and in memory of Fiona Moore who died in May 2013 at the age of 16 from Primary Pulmonary hypertension, while awaiting a lung transplant.

Fiona’s parents, Deirdre and Martin used Ronald McDonald House, over the years while she was ill.

The charity provides accommodation and a caring supportive environment for families whose children are seriously ill and are hospitalised or undergoing medical treatment at Our Ladys Children Hospital Crumlin.

Deirdre and Martin Moore described how vital the service was for them.

“When Fiona was admitted to Our Lady’s Hospital Crumlin in May 2009 we were told it could be for a long time. The hospital staff referred us to Ronald Mc Donald house and within a few days we were allocated an apartment there.

The facilities were first class and included a fully equipped kitchen, a library, a play area and other facilities that made our relocation to Dublin easier to deal with.

Over the next few years we had numerous hospital stays and even at short notice the staff in Ronald McDonald house would do their utmost to get us a room.  We may have only stayed two nights or many weeks but were always made feel at home. Like us, no family ever knows when a child will be taken ill and have to be admitted to Crumlin and even for how long. It is a fantastic facility for families who are under extreme stress and miles from home.”

The organisers of the run are encouraging people to dress up for the event and aim to make it a family day out fun for people of all ages, along with the family pet.

The Tralee 5Km Santa Fun Run kicks off a 11am from the Tralee Bay wetlands, and continues on the same route as last year out to blennerville, over the bridge, back through Kearneys Road, and ending once again in the wetlands.

Entry is €5 for under 16s, €8 for adults, €20 for a family of 4, €30 for a family of 5 or more. Pets are free.

CHRISTMAS is worth millions of euro to Tralee and the Christmas Spraoi in Tralee aims to attract more people than ever to the county’s retail capital for a great festive experience in 2014.

Tralee Chamber Alliance and Kerry County Council have teamed up to launch the Christmas Spraoi in Tralee – 34 days of fun, joy and excitement for shoppers, diners and party-goers.

The Christmas Spraoi in Tralee will start on Saturday, November 29 when the Rose of Tralee, Maria Walsh, joins the Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Jim Finucane, to switch on the Christmas lights in The Square.

The CH Annual Santa Parade will signal the start of the festive season – also on November 29 – while the Fireworks Spectacular at Manor Park from 7pm on New Year’s Eve will bring in 2015 with a bang!

The CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “Over €30,000 will be spent this year on music, lights and promoting the town as Munster’s top Christmas destination. Christmas is when most people push the boat out in treating family, relatives, work colleagues and friends with gifts, presents and social occasions. Tralee Chamber Alliance is proud to push the boat out to make it memorable and profitable for businesses, local charities and the wider community. We are grateful to our members and Kerry County Council for making this possible.”

Details of some fun new Christmas charity events will be announced in the coming weeks to add some colour and spice to what is already an exciting calendar.

Santa will meet children at a host of venues in the Tralee area while many of the town’s hotels have lined-up a full programme of Christmas Party Nights throughout December.

Festive music will fill the air over the streets of Tralee from The Crib in The Square, through the Town Centre with many charities benefitting from the dulcet tones of the carol singers.

“Free on-street parking and in Kerry County Council Car Parks from 1pm daily for the entire month of December will help make a trip to Tralee the perfect day and night out this Christmas,” he said.

The Christmas Spraoi in Tralee Calendar will be available on www.Tralee.ie, Facebook and from outlets all over Tralee from the middle of November.

EVERY Christmas brings its fad toy that every child wants, but something is different this year.

It appears the world has gone ‘Frozen’ mad with merchandise from the Disney animated movie, released last November, causing (welcome) headaches for toy stores trying to keep with demand.

Tralee is no different according to Ann Laide of Caball’s Toy Store in Bridge Street.

“Even Mattel, who make the toys got it wrong. Demand is far exceeding supply and the Anna and Elsa dolls are so scarce it’s unbelievable. They’re like gold dust,” said Ann.

“We have some here now, but they are flying out of the shop. I have seen fads like the Ninja Turtles, Furbys and so on, but in my 40 years I have never seen anything like this,” she continued.

“We’re selling them all day, every day and it’s not just the Anna and Elsa dolls. The art sets, diaries, jewellery boxes, travel cases, anything to do with ‘Frozen’ is in high demand,” said Ann.

With a new mini-movie planned for next year and a full length one the year after, it appears ‘Frozen’ will remain the hottest item in stores for years to come.

Ann stresses that new stock is coming in all the time, but even in early November, people are advised to snap them up as the manufacturers are struggling to keep up with demand.

Don’t ‘let it go’ until the last minute seems to be the advice (sorry, couldn’t resist!).

THE Kerry Hospice Foundation launched its Christmas Card appeal on Monday night with the help of Kerry footballers, Kieran Donaghy and Aidan O’Mahony who brought along Sam Maguire.

This annual venture, sponsored by Kerry Group, hopes to raise in excess of €40,000 towards the continued development and provision of care in the Palliative Care Centre at Kerry General Hospital.

“Each year we are overwhelmed by the magnificent generosity of the Kerry people in response to Christmas Card appeal which is crucial to the work of the Kerry Hospice Foundation,” said Ted Moynihan, Kerry Hospice Foundation Chairperson.

Kieran Donaghy and Aidan O’Mahony were on hand with the Sam Maguire cup to support this year’s appeal and to say a big ‘Thank You’ to the Kerry Hospice Foundation for the comfort and support it provides to terminally-ill patients and their families in Kerry.

The Christmas card collection this year features the art work of local artist Jane Hilliard.

“We are also again very grateful for the magnificent support from Kerry Group in underwriting all the production costs associated with our Christmas card collection – ensuring all money raised from sales goes directly toward the provision of our vital services to patients and their families throughout the County” said Ted Moynihan.

Commenting at the launch, Frank Hayes, Director of Corporate Affairs, said; “Kerry Group is very pleased to be associated with this worthy cause which offers so much comfort and care to families faced with serious illness in Kerry.”
