Members of the Curraheen Choir assembled for their annual Christmas carol service in aid of St Vincent De Paul at O’Shea’s Gala in Blennerville on Friday, December 16.

They were there for just one hour and in that time generous customers at the petrol station/shop donated €300. Paddy Kevane, Area President of SVP, was on hand to accept the cheque from Mary O’Shea of O’Shea’s Gala and choir members on Thursday.

Public’s Help Needed To Bring Joy To Less Advantaged Children This Christmas

.
Launching this year’s SVP Tralee Christmas Toy Appeal were Marion Moore of SVP, Ruairì Fry International Youth Rep IRL for SVP, Treasa Walsh of SVP Tralee and Sharon Sheehan of Toys Upstairs in Rock Street.

ST Vincent de Paul Tralee has teamed up with Toys Upstairs Toymaster Tralee for the third year in a row, to help bring joy to less advantaged children this Christmas.

The toy shop, located above Kellihers Hardware on Rock Street, took up the mantle of holding the appeal two years ago, after the retirement of Ann Laide and closure of Caballs Toymaster in June of 2019.

People can call in to buy and pay for vouchers over the phone. The vouchers will be used to pay for the toys children requested on their letter to Santa, seen by the folks at SVP, so they will get what they asked for on Christmas morning.

“Demand is high for St Vincent de Paul’s services in the Tralee area,” said Treasa Walsh of SVP Tralee.

“Hopefully Santa’s bag will be full and people will tune into their inner child to help with donations. With the public’ help, on Christmas morning we will know that we have been a ‘Secret Santa’ to very happy children.”

“We are very grateful for any and all the support we get from the public a huge thank you and please God we will all have a safe and joyful Christmas,” said Treasa.

Toys Upstairs will be accepting monies for vouchers right up until Christmas Eve. There’s also a collection box at the tills. For more details, call them on 066-7122555, email kelliherstoys@gmail.com or visit their facebook page

SVP Tralee Expecting Huge Rise In Demand For Services In Coming Weeks

.
Junior Locke of SVP.

FOOD hampers are being stocked at the St Vincent de Paul depot in Monavalley, as families face a huge financial impact in the weeks and months ahead.

Junior Locke of St Vincent de Paul said many people were paid up by employers up to the next two weeks, but after that their incomes will be severely curtailed and they are expecting a huge rise in demand for their services.

A team of volunteers have been working hard at the centre to make up the hampers which will be ready to go when the demand arises.

.

While the shops in Castle Street and Friary Lane are closed to the public, people can still make clothes donations at their ‘clothes banks’ at the centre.

Junior said many people might be clearing out their wardrobes at this time and to bear the charity in mind if they are getting rid of clothes.

SVP Volunteers and Meals on Wheels is active and they will continue to assist people. The service  has been expanded to seven days a week to cope with demand and they have received support from chefs in the area who are now working on a rota system for the charity. If you would like to avail of the service, call (066) 712 8021 or email svp.tralee@svp.ie

WITH just days to Christmas, volunteers at St Vincent de Paul depot in Monavalley have been working diligently to get food packages made up for needy families in the Tralee area.

By Friday they had over 800 families on their list to receive  hampers, but that number was likely to rise. This was already 200 more than last year and 400 more than were distributed in 2017.

Foodshare puts in food from FEAD, which is the European Union’s fund for the most deprived and then St Vincent de Paul, from funds they have raised, buy extra food like soft drinks, tea, coffee, meat, etc.

Continued below…

.

They plan on distributing all the hampers by Monday evening. Foodshare works with other organisations in the area and they also distribute food packages to needy people, so it’s likely the number of families and individuals who need help is even greater than 800.

While there is much talk about an economic revival, it’s clear from these figures that there is an increasing number of people in need of help around Christmas. Thanks to the public’s generosity, St Vincent de Paul and Foodshare can continue to help them.

St Vincent de Paul are hosting a three-course Christmas Day Dinner at St John’s Parish Centre from 2pm to 4pm. It’s free of charge and all are welcome.

ST Vincent de Paul will be hosting a special Christmas Day Dinner from 2pm to 4pm in St. John’s Parish Centre, Castle Street.

“It would be much appreciated if any business could be in the position to make a donation for the event,” said SVP Tralee Area President, Paddy Kevane.

.

“We particularly need donations of non-perishable foods, disposable utensils and crockery for the event.  Volunteers are still welcome. Particularly to help out with distribution of the dinners,” he added.

IT’S a charity event which has been going on for many years and even the closure of Caballs earlier this year won’t stop the annual St Vincent de Paul Toy appeal.

Ann Laide of Caballs did sterling work with Treasa Walsh and Marian Moore to make sure local children in need had a happy Christmas with a gift from their Santa’s list and now the staff of a newly opened toy store have taken up the mantle.

Sharon Sheehan and all at ‘Toys Upstairs’ above Kelliher’s Hardware on Rock Street, have joined forces with SVP for this Christmas.

.

“It’s the same idea as the previous years with Caballs Toymaster,” said Treasa Walsh, who co-ordintates the appeal once again with Marian Moore.

“You can buy a voucher which will be given to St Vincent de Paul or there’s also a donation box on the counter if people would prefer to give cash to help buy a present. With the help of Sharon and the rest of the staff here in ‘Toys Upstairs’, we hope people will make it a success again this year,” said Treasa.

“We are delighted to help out,” said Sharon Sheehan. “The appeal was always a success and it’s a local charity, so you want all the children to be happy at Christmas and receive a gift they ask for,” she added.

It’s always been a great success, so please give what you can to the appeal to ensure a local child’s Christmas will be a happy one.

St Vincent De Paul Warns Of Teenager Claiming To Be Selling Lines For Charity

.

ST Vincent de Paul in Tralee is advising people to be wary of a youth who is claiming to be collecting for the charity.

There are reports that a teenage boy was going door to door selling lines for SVP in the Kevin Barrys Villas and general Mitchels area. When challenged by some householders for identification, he claimed he left it in Dublin.

St Vincent de Paul Tralee said nobody has been authorised to sell lines door to door in the town. It’s understood he collected a sizeable sum of money.

The annual appeal has been a tremendous success in the past and it’s hoped the people of Tralee and beyond show their seasonal spirit of generosity again by contributing.

Anyone who comes into the shop on Bridge Street can buy a special voucher, with a minimum value of €5, with the chosen amount going towards St Vincent de Paul to help them to get gifts for Kerry children at Christmas.

St Vincent de Paul will have a wish list from children and they try to get each of them a gift they want for Christmas from the money collected.

Treasa Walsh, a volunteer with St Vincent de Paul explained that the appeal has worked wonderfully in the past number of years.

“The vouchers was an idea we came up with because we found people are very kind in donating toys, but we also found that some toys donated were not suitable to the child. We wanted to shop local so we approached Anne with the idea and she said she was more than willing to help out in any way.”

“We take a list from children of toys they want, within a reasonable budget. We would be very grateful for donations, so we can assure every child in Tralee will get a present they want,” said Treasa.

Ann Laide of Caballs Toymaster said; “It’s our honour and pleasure to be able to help – in our own small way – St Vincent de Paul to do some of their great work,” said.

It’s a fantastic appeal so get involved, if you can, this year by calling into the shop on Bridge Street to buy a voucher. It could make a child’s Christmas.

ST Vincent de Paul are appealing to the public to drop in any clothes they can spare to their shops in Castles Street and Friary Lane.

The appeal comes as they revealed there is still a big demand for their services and this is likely to increase as Christmas approaches.

“The seasons have changed and if people are putting away their summer clothes, they might think instead of putting them into a bag and giving them to us,” said Junior Locke of St Vincent de Paul in Tralee, who also appealed for any winter clothes people have to spare.

“There is a massive demand on the services. Our shops are extremely busy which is down also to the quality of stuff we are receiving. Without the support of the public, we would not be able to deliver the vital services to the people who need it,” said Junior.

“Our main work is visitation to people’s homes to see what they need. Food and fuel are our priorities for them. We see in the past few weeks people are starting to struggle with paying for fuel,” he said.

They are also appealing for volunteers in the shops and training is provided by SVP. The society will also hold a fundraising fashion show on November 17 in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel at 7.30pm.

ST Vincent de Paul held a ‘Customer Appreciation Night’ at its Castle Street store on Thursday and also put out an appeal to the public for more donations.

Shoppers and well wishers called into the store which has been opened since March this year.

Along with loads of clothes to sift through, those attending were made feel at home and treated to sandwiches, cakes and tea while they browsed.

The new store on Upper Castle Street (located opposite the entrance to Presentation Primary School) is beginning to build up a sizeable clientele as it’s the only charity shop on that side of town.

Maeve Leahy, manager of the store, is appealing for donations from the public and for any people who are interested in volunteering for the charity to give a call in.

Despite a perceived upturn in the fortunes of the country, SVP is still as vital as ever helping those who are struggling and with the new school year just around the corner, that need is set to become more pronounced in the coming weeks.

NEW St Vincent de Paul Store store on Castle Street is aiming to be more visible to the public.

The new store on Upper Castle Street (located opposite the entrance to Presentation Primary School) has been open for two weeks, but on Monday night was launched in earnest with an in-store fashion event and customer appreciation night that showcased the items on sale.

After spending over €470,000 last year, St Vincent de Paul needed to generate more income to keep the services going to their high standards.

It is hoped that this store will be more visible to the public than the one in Friary Lane which is a bit off the beaten path in the Strand Street area.

“We need something on the main street so people will know where we are,” said Junior Locke of St Vincent de Paul Tralee Area President. “Since we’ve opened we had a lot of people come in donating and others seeking help, so it opens up that avenue of where to go,” he added.

Maeve Leahy is the manager of the new store, which all St Vincent de Paul shops in the country will now be modelled on. She has 12 years of experience in fashion retail.

“We’re still finding our feet, but we’re getting there” said Maeve Leahy. “There is nothing covering charity shops this side of town and it has a good catchment area,” she added.

St Vincent de Paul In The Thick Of Final Push For Christmas

AT the moment, St Vincent de Paul are busy delivering Christmas hampers for families who need them in the Tralee area.

“We are seeing a big increase on last year, we’re definitely up 10% on last year,” said Junior Locke of St Vincent de Paul. “At present we have in the region of 600 hampers ready to go. We are very fortunate that we have the people of Tralee donating stuff to us.”

Despite unemployment numbers dropping and economic growth rising – according to national figures – St Vincent de Paul Tralee has still not seen this trickle down.

Junior Locke is urging families who are feeling the pressure to stay away from money lenders.

“The families we see coming into us now are the ones who would have been supporting us before, but have now found themselves so stretched because of mortgage repayments or interest rates, they now need our help.”

“It’s fine until something happens – the car breaks down or a child gets sick. From there on they’re just borrowing money. So our big problem is money lenders,” he continued.

“So there are ways to get out of that through schemes we have with the Credit Union and MABS. With the help of both of them we can help facilitate small loans, to keep the money lenders away from the door.”

“We understand people are under pressure this time year, but it’s about being realistic. We understand the children want the best of everything, but not at the cost of going without food or heating. So we’re urging people not to go to the money lenders and come talk to us, the Credit Union or MABS. The last resort is never money lenders,” he said.

If you want to donate to help families less fortunate this Christmas, there is still time to give a helping hand. Garveys, Aldi and Tesco in Manor West have St Vincent de Paul drop off facilities.  Donations can also be given to the St Vincent de Paul Shop on Friary Lane.

“We’d just like to thank people for giving this Christmas, without their help we wouldn’t be able to support families that need it most,” said Junior.

ON Thursday, the St Vincent de Paul store on Friary Lane gave thanks to their customers by holding an appreciation day for the people who donate and shop there.

For the day, staff dressed up in Christmas gear and fifth pupils from Holy Family Primary School displayed their caroling abilities with updated versions of festive hits.

“We are very fortunate that we have people of Tralee donating stuff and buying in the shops, so this is a way of giving thanks for that,” said Junior Locke of St Vincent de Paul.

The day was also a chance for Mrs Dempsey’s Holy Family fifth class singers to belt out a few numbers to the public an opportunity they relished.

“This is lovely to do because the pupils are getting to their holidays and they’re really relaxed,” said Holy Family teacher, Claire Dempsey.

“It will encourage their own families to come down and buy things from St Vincent de Paul, which is lovely for the shop,” she said.

ST Vincent De Paul and Garvey’s Super Valu have joined forces to help put food on the table for families less fortunate this Christmas.

“Garvey’s came to us this year, so we’re delighted they thought of us as a charity,” said St Vincent De Paul’s, Junior Locke.

The ‘Good Food Karma’ food appeal will be operating in every Garvey’s in Kerry. Trolleys will be left in the store for people to donate food, the trolleys will then  be collected from Garvey’s on a weekly basis and go to families as hampers for Christmas.

“It’s a great initiative, it helps local people have a far better Christmas than they would have,” said Garvey’s Tralee’s Tim Moynihan.

“While customers are going around doing their Christmas shopping at any of our stores around the county, there’s a chance to help people less well off in the community. We hope that people would be willing to help this great charity and the work it does,” he said.

Christmas can be such a difficult time for so many families who may be struggling, so this is a vital appeal to give St Vincent De Paul a chance to help people.

“Every year we do this with Caballs,” said Helen Locke from St Vincent de Paul. “The reaction we get is amazing. The amount of toys we can get children for Christmas as a result is great. Some families would be in tears when we hand over the presents. It’s so good that we can help so many people,” said Helen.

Ann Laide of Caballs Toymaster said she’s always amazed at the great work St Vincent de Paul do for people in the town and is delighted to get involved every year.

“Caballs are delighted to be able help St Vincent de Paul collect money for children at Christmas. For the last three years of the appeal, every child has received something they wanted from Santa on Christmas morning,” she said.

It’s a fantastic appeal so get involved, if you can, this year by calling into the shop. It could make a child’s Christmas.
