Main Street In Killarney To Close To Traffic On Weekends During July/August

.

KERRY County Council has decided to close Main Street in Killarney to traffic on weekends during July and August, beginning on the weekend of Saturday, 10 July 2021.

It’s believed the closure will contribute towards the achievement of an outdoor summer in Killarney over the coming months and improve pedestrian safety in the town centre.

Following the receipt of submissions on the matter under Section 75 of the Roads Act, the Council has decided to close Main Street to vehicular traffic from Saturdays at 11am to Mondays at 8am (extended to Tuesday on the August Bank Holiday Weekend).

Kerry County Council also engaged with An Garda Síochana as part of the consideration of the proposal.

Public Consultation On N22 Farranfore-Killarney Road Project

Farranfore.

A PERIOD of public consultation on the development of improved transport linkages and a new route corridor to enhance connectivity between Farranfore and Killarney will begin on Friday.

Kerry County Council is working in partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Department of Transport to develop the N22 project and is inviting the public to engage in a process of consultation over the coming months.

The aim of this period of consultation is to examine and identify improved transport linkages between Farranfore and Killarney including identifying the broad parameters of the area within which a new road-based link could be developed.

As part of the process, a Southern Link Road between the N22 and the N71 Muckross Road in Killarney is also being developed and forms part of the public consultation.

An online public consultation period will run for six weeks from May 14 to June 25. Members of the public and interested parties can view the shortlisted Route Corridor Options on the project website https://n22.kerrycoco.ie/ from Friday, May 14.

Alternatively, submissions can also be sent in by Freepost or email to the addresses outlined on the website.

The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen welcomed the launch of the public consultation: “This is a hugely important project for the entire county and has tremendous potential to enhance regional connectivity between Tralee and Killarney and the north and south of the county as well as improving safety for everyone. I urge everyone to engage with the public consultation process and have your say.”

Following the consultation on the Route Options Corridors, an Emerging Preferred Route Corridor for the scheme will be identified which will be displayed at a future public consultation.

Once a likely route corridor emerges a Northern Link Road in Killarney town and an N23 Link at Farranfore will also be progressed.

Kerry County Council has appointed Jacobs Engineering Ireland Ltd. as Technical Advisors to progress the planning and design phases for the scheme.

During the consultation people can also book an appointment within the online virtual room and request a call back to speak with a member of the project team by phone or video call. An information leaflet and brochure have been produced to inform the public about the process and how they can engage with the project team.

.

REPRESENTATIVES of Kerry County Council and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce met with An Garda Síochana today (Wednesday) in relation to an incident on Main Street in the town on Saturday night.

Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Brendan Cronin, Municipal District Manager, Angela McAllen and the President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Paul Sherry thanked An Garda Síochána for the meeting.

“There has always been excellent stakeholder engagement in Killarney, and we continue to work together to ensure measures are in place to facilitate a safe and enjoyable visit to our town for all.  In light of the increasing numbers of coronavirus cases nationally, we are appealing to members of the public and businesses to continue to act responsibly to limit the spread of the virus,” they said.

The three bodies said they would continue working together to assure everyone that Killarney will always be a welcoming, safe destination, providing the highest of standards, with wonderful facilities for the enjoyment of the general public. It was acknowledged that the vast majority of people who visit and socialise in Killarney do so responsibly.

Killarney Chamber Condemns Racist Stickers On Busy Road

.
Muckross Road, Killarney.

KILLARNEY Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has issued a statement condemning the people responsible for posting racist stickers along the Muckross Road, a busy route into and out of the town.

The stickers, discovered on poles on Tuesday morning, feature cartoon images of migrants of different races following a signpost for ‘Convention Centre’ with the heading “You’ll never be the Irish”. The INEC has hosted citizenship ceremonies in the past couple of years. The matter is being investigated by gardai.

The statement from Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce reads;

“Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce in the strongest possible terms, the mindless and completely unacceptable actions of whoever was responsible for placing racist, vulgar and pitiful slogans in a public area, under the cover of darkness, on Tuesday morning.”

“Such dreadful behaviour has no place in the progressive and successful town of Killarney where there is a warm, genuine and universal welcome for everybody.”

“We appreciate the enormous contribution made by people from overseas, over several decades, who come to live and work alongside us and become our neighbours, friends and colleagues and our children’s friends, classmates and teammates.”

“Racism is an ugly weapon that must have no place in society and as long as mature, decent and responsible people stand up against the uneducated bullies that engage in such unacceptable acts, then they will have far more limited opportunities to spread their hatred.”

“The Chamber’s steadfast view is that there must be absolutely no tolerance for discrimination, prejudice, insult or antagonism directed at anybody because they are of a different race or ethnicity.”

“Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce would encourage anybody with any information that might help to identify those responsible for this cowardly act to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064-6631222 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800-666-111.”

However, the road network to the county is a problem especially bottlenecks in Adare and Macroom which is putting off potential visitors to Killarney.

Another problem to tackle is seasonality with occupancy rates dropping to a low of 20% cent in December as opposed to the national average of 60% for that time of year.

The report is to be officially launched in Killarney this morning by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Deputy Brendan Griffin.

Mr Kenny has great affection for and close bonds with Killarney. He has a holiday home in Kilcummin and visits the area at very regular intervals, enjoying walks on the mountains, cycling through the countyside, visiting relatives, playing golf and taking part in the Ring of Kerry charity cycle every year.

A native of Co Mayo, Mr Kenny was first elected to the Dáil in 1975 following the sudden death of his TD father, Henry, and over the past 42 years he served as Minister for Tourism and Trade, Minister for Youth Affairs, Minister for Defence and he became the longest-serving leader of Fine Gael, holding office from 2002 to 2017. He was elected Taoiseach in 2011 and remained at the helm until he stepped down in June of this year.

Mr Kenny is married to Fionnuala O’Kelly – who has strong Killarney links – and they have two sons, Ferdia and Naoise, and a daughter, Aoibhinn.

The Cairde Chill Arne Order of Innisfallen awards scheme is a joint initiative between Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Kerry County Council. It was established in 2005 to recognise outstanding contributions of people to the economic development of the town and its tourism industry. Those selected for the honour are invested as Members of the Order of Innisfallen.

Previous recipients include actor Michael Fassbender, entertainer Daniel O’Donnell, industrialist Isolde Liebherr, tour operators Brian Stack, Linda Roberts and Brian McColgan, travel writer Susan Poole, former ministers John O’Donoghue and Jimmy Deenihan and tourism official Margaret Cahill.

Innisfallen Island is one of Killarney’s best-known and most historic heritage sites. It began as a place of healing and became a major centre of learning where the Annals of Innisfallen, the oldest contemporary source of the history of Munster, were scripted.

DUE to a clash of matches, there is a chance Saturday week’s Munster Final replay between Kerry and Cork in Killarney may not be televised.

The Munster Council have announced a throw-in of 7pm, which is the same time Sky Sports are scheduled to show one of the Round 3B qualifiers.

RTE are interested in showing the Munster Final replay, but due to an agreement they have with Sky where both networks won’t show GAA matches at the same time puts screening the Kerry v Cork clash is in jeopardy.

It is reported that all parties are currently trying to come to an agreement, so all may not lost yet.

The reason for scheduling the match at 7pm is due to traffic issues. Both the Munster Council and Gardai want an evening throw-in to ensure people have plenty of time to get to the match.

If the match isn’t televised, this is expected to provide a big boost the attendance figures with fans hoping for a rematch as thrilling as the first game where over 35,000 paid in.

There also could be an issue with lighting. If, on Saturday week, it’s a dull day and the goes into extra-time, the fact that Fitzgerald Stadium does not have floodlight system could cause problems for players.

7 Reasons We Love Kerry v Cork In Killarney

On a fine day in Killarney, there is no better place to be for a game of football.

Gavin O’Connor says we all love Munster Final day against the Rebels in Killarney. Here’s why…

1. The Almost Guaranteed Sunshine

As sure as the Gooch breaking rebel hearts, the sun will be out on Munster Final day. Anything other than the glorious weather is a strange anomaly, like El Niño, or Cork winning in Killarney.

Mind you, the forecast isn’t great and it’s now 20 years since Cork won at Fitzgerald Stadium.

2. The Town Turns Red For A Day

For Corkonians, a Munster Final in Killarney – as well as a trip to Thurles – is marked off as a must-attend fixture in their sporting calender. For many, the game is secondary, to the mingling they do with their betters across the county bounds.

3. The History

Since the introduction of the back door, it’s true a lot of the magic has been taken out of Munster football’s big day, but as anticipation grows when people make their way to the ground, they will take part in a tradition which has helped shape both counties sporting identity for over 100 years.

4. Enemy Lines Can Be Breached

In order to keep the gene pool nicely diluted, another time honoured tradition happens when two people somehow overcome their tribal differences and disappear off into the Killarney night. You’d be surprised at the amount of Munster Final romances that bloomed out there.

5. Shure It’s Only Out The Road

One of the undoubted advantages is the short travel time. You can rest your head on Saturday night safe in the knowledge you will cop plenty of Zs and there will be no rush either for the fry in the morning before you head out the door.

6. The Bandwagoners

Considering some of my best friends are ‘Bandwagoners’ I have nothing against them, in fact they bring a whole lot to the table. Fitzgerald Stadium would be more than half empty without them! They also say things like “will the game sell out?” and “what time is kick-off?”.

7. One big happy family

When it comes down to it, we may have our differences, but half of us are all related anyway! We’re also the only two counties who possess the power to really quieten the Dubs.

Good News For Kerry As Forty New Jobs Are Created

Arthur Spring 2
.

FORTY new jobs, to be situated at a Killarney company, have been announced this morning worth an extra €2.4m to local economy.

In all, 100 new jobs are to be created by Killarney based manufacturing and engineering group, Tricel, with 40 of these to be situated in the company’s headquarters in Killarney.

The new jobs, including graduate positions, will bolster the existing workforce of 250 based in Ireland, UK and France over the next 18 months and will strengthen operations in management, engineering, R&D, product development, marketing and manufacturing.

Exports at the company have increased to over 70% of turnover in just eight years and growth of over 65% in last five years.  Tricel currently employs 100 people in Killarney.

This project is supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through Enterprise Ireland.

Tricel is a European leader in the development and manufacture of advanced and specialised composite products from water storage tanks and wastewater treatment systems to construction and building products as well as specialist moulding and filler products for the manufacturing and automotive industries.

The new jobs also mean that the company will invest in more resources to facilitate its expansion across the company and it is hoped that many of the new graduate positions could be filled from local third level colleges in the Munster region.

Originally known as Killarney Plastics which was founded in Killarney in 1973, Tricel also established further operations in UK in 1993 and in France in 2011 from where it won ‘Best Irish Company in France’ award in 2012.

From 2010 to 2013 the company saw growth of 57% with an extra 75 jobs created then and has forecasted turnover to double in the next four years. This will be achieved by the continuing expansion into new markets and through the introduction of new and innovative products into recently newfound markets throughout Europe, Middle East, Australia and the American continents

Tricel Managing Director Mike Stack said: “Our main success and expansion was actually fuelled by the recession in Ireland which had a detrimental effect on our Irish market which forced us to increase focus on our existing UK market and also on further export markets. We bucked the trend and backed ourselves by making a multimillion euro investment in R&D and plant & machinery within this period.

“Amongst our biggest business achievements during this time was the fact in 2007 we exported 5% of our turnover and were highly dependent on the Irish construction market. By 2013 our exports had increased to 70% of our turnover. This investment has led to continuous process and design improvements which have ensured our current and future success. Being a privately family owned business we pride ourselves in supporting the local economy and where possible, local manufacturers and service providers are the preferred supplier choice. We’re very grateful for the assistance we’ve received from the Government through Enterprise Ireland which has really helped us grow our business and exports to help create these jobs”.

The Stack family were keen to point out that a game changer and turning point for the company was when they made the decision to enter the environmental market with a domestic waste water treatment system. As the success of this product became apparent in Ireland they made the decision to manufacture it in modular form which would allow it to be transported overseas at a competitive cost. This eventually led to the decision to assemble the product in their Gloucester factory to service the UK market and to open a purpose built assembly factory in France to service the French market.

YOU know that undercurrent of rivalry that Killarney and Tralee has for each other?

Well, a fight in a county final between a selection of both town’s best footballers back 100 years ago this weekend, could be the source of some of that animosity that bubbles under the surface.

On April 12, 1915, the football county final was played between Tralee Mitchels and Killarney Crokes. In the intervening years, Tralee Mitchels split to form other clubs in the town, mainly down to its strength of numbers in the early days of the county championship.

In the second half of the that 1915 final, the match had to abandoned after fights broke out between both players and fans.

The mass brawl kicked off after the Tralee side scored a goal late in the game which put them one point ahead with dizzying high score being (1-2 to 1-1)…and they say football now is negative!

As soon as the players began fighting, supporters entered the field of play to mill in with their heroes.

Eventually though, order was restored and the dust up halted, but Killarney refused to play on so the match was awarded to the Tralee team.

So began a rivalry that has accelerated over the past century!

The game was highlighted on Century Ireland, which is a fortnightly online newspaper

Vincent Browne’s ‘People’s Debate’ In Kerry Has Been Cancelled

THE Vincent Browne ‘People’s Debate’ which was set to take place in the Gleneagle Killarney on Monday next has been cancelled.

Last week it was been announced that the popular Vincent Browne debates where members of the public get a chance to grill Ministers and TDs would be coming to the Kerry constituency.

Last Friday TV3 announced that the scheduled Kerry ‘People’s Debate’ has been cancelled without any new date being set.

Reasons for cancellation are down to TV3 wanting to plan a series of special broadcasts during the day from Kerry as it is such a large constituency.

The current time frame would not have allowed TV3 ample time to prepare for a larger production so they are planning something a later date.

Local Musician Slams Music Festival Organisers After Accusations Of ‘Pay To Play’

Killarney FestA MUSIC festival set to take place in Killarney this summer has cancelled one of their stages due to “negative publicity” after being accused of adopting a “pay for play” approach to attracting emerging talent.

The Killarney Festival of Music and Food received a backlash from musicians – including Tralee recording artist Ian O’Doherty  –  after putting forward an initiative called ‘The Actbacker’, whereby artists could book a spot on the emerging talent stage by selling a minimum of 50 ‘day tickets’ to the weekend festival.

The plan was to split the revenue from  ticket sales – 70% to the festival, 30% to musicians.  The more tickets an artist sold the higher up the bill the would be.

Critics have accused the organisers of taking advantage of musicians by making them sell tickets and promote the festival for them.

In total, 18 acts were scheduled to play the emerging talent stage. If each act sold at least 50 tickets, it would have brought 900 people. At  €76 a ticket the minimum raised from ticket sales would have been $68,400, with it being split 70/30% in favour of the festival.

Speaking to TraleeToday.ie just prior to the organisers cancelling the stage, local recording artist, Ian O’Doherty, was one of those disappointed with The Killarney Festival of Music & Food initiative.

“I’ve seen examples of this kind of stuff before, but I’ve never seen anything quite as cheeky,” said Ian O’Doherty.

“Unfortunately there will always be someone who will play ball, but I wouldn’t think any less of anyone if they did. Though it wouldn’t be something I or many other artists I know would consider,” said Ian.

“I understand they’re in the business of making money, but from a PR point of view it is a very bad move. It’s going to hurt them because they are getting bad publicity at the moment,” said Ian.

“They obviously thought this was the best business decision to make, maybe they thought foolishly it was the fairest decision for the artists,” he said.

In cancelling the Emerging Talent stage, Killarney Festival of Music & Food made a statement saying “bands and musicians who play would be paid a good fee (more than they would receive at any other festival).”

“Bands were being asked to do a little bit of work to earn their slot and if they were performing at their own gig they would have to do the same.  All the bands had to do was reach out to their fanbase and seek their support and their fans would get a full day ticket for the festival in return.  Bands were not been asked to ‘pay to play’,” the festival organisers said.

Here is a selection of some criticism The Killarney Festival of Music & Food has faced on Twitter which forced them to pull the emerging talent stage.

AROUND 700 Austin Stacks fans are expected to board free coaches to Killarney next week thanks to the club.

But the change of venue for this Sunday’s county final replay has forced Rockies to abandon their famous march to the stadium before big matches.

Because the replay between Austin Stacks and Mid Kerry takes place in Killarney, an estimated 700 Austin Stacks supporters will board free coaches at the Connolly Park HQ and drop them to the gates of Fitzgerald Stadium.

Tickets for the coaches are free and can be collected from the Austin Stacks clubhouse in Connolly Park. As it stands now, there are 12 buses booked provisionally.

Buses will leave Connolly Park at 1pm sharp, Sunday afternoon.

“It’s a disgrace really, the match should be on in Tralee,” said Kevin O’Carroll, of the Austin Stacks supporters group.

For last year’s county final in Killarney, Stacks fans, made their way by boarding special trains. This year, due to works being done on the train line, the extra carriages can’t be brought in for supporters.

“There will be no march to Fitzgerald Stadium this year. What will happen is, we will come in the Lewis Road entrance, then march across to the terraces and we will stop at the tunnel and have a bit of a banter there,” said Kevin O’Carroll.

Buses are scheduled to head back to Tralee a half an hour after the final whistle.

“Please God, if we win it, the first place you want to be is back at your own club and winning it is the most important thing,” said Kevin.

Ticket prices for the replay are unchanged at the price of €15 for adults, €5 for students, OAP and Juveniles (U16).

REPORTS

(U15) Premier ; Killarney Celtic A 0-3 Park A

Park U-15As played their first league game of the season, away to Killarney Celtic on Monday 29th September. From the kick off Park imposed themselves on the game and were unlucky not to score early on when a fine effort from Michael Slattery came back off the crossbar with the keeper beaten. Park were very dominant in midfield in the early exchanges and chances were presenting themselves.

Thomas Burke, Michael Slattery and Sean Carmody all went close before Park finally opened their account in the 12th minute. Michael Slattery crossed from the left and when the Killarney keeper failed to deal with the cross Michael O’Gara was on hand to force the ball over the line by the smallest of margins. Park pressed time after time and with their defence proving very capable in dealing with the Celtic attack another goal looked inevitable.

Poor decision making from the Park lads and some stout defending from the Killarney defence meant that the goal didn’t come until the 34th minute. Again it was that man Michael Slattery on the end of a Sean Carmody through ball. This time his finish was emphatic and he gave the Killarney custodian no chance. 2-0 up at half time but it as should have been more.

A few early chances went a begging for Park early in the second half but due to tiring legs Killarney Celtic began to get a foothold on the game. Our defence, which hadn’t been overly tested in the first half were now called into action in a serious way. Michéal Devlin from Celtic was getting more and more of the ball on the right wing and the contest between him and Adam Ward from the Park turned into a great duel.

Devlin’s pace certainly caused Park problems but Ward’s doggedness and determination was outstanding and he was instrumental in ensuring clear shots at goal were few and far between. Gearoid Fitzgerald continued to show why he is one of Kerry’s up and coming goalkeeping stars with some timely interventions and superb handling. As Killarney threw everything at Park, James Rusk, Dylan Casey, Matt Lukco, Sean Carmody,Kevin Browne, Michael O’Gara and substitute Ruairi O’Kelly were working their socks off to ensure that while Celtic had the majority of possession they had very few clear chances on goals.

Park had a number of chances on the break which they failed to convert but one could put this down to first game rustiness. Robin McCarthy replaced the hard working Niall Sertutxa and with a little bit more match practice he would surely have converted on a number of occasions. Dan Goggin made his competitive debut for Park and for a young man who was still recovering from a chest infection he had a superb 15 minute cameo.

John Ward and Jake Deering made late appearances on the field and in the 80th minute the 3rd goal finally came. It was somewhat fortuitous for the Park. A long ball from Matt Lukco forced a mix up between the Killarney keeper and his defence and this ended up with one of the Killarney lads putting the ball into his own net. A good, if understandably rusty, start to the season for our lads.

The effort put in by all the players was outstanding and if they keep training hard there is no reason why this cannot be a successful season. There is some excellent competition for places, Raul Venzel was an unused substitute due to a knee injury, and there are a number of other players who could still force their way into the squad. We also have the experienced Paudie Barrett now back in the fold and offering his words of wisdom on the sideline which is a great support to everyone. Many thanks to the parents who drove to Killarney and to those who offered to do so.

Your help is greatly appreciated by the team and management. We will have a challenge game or training on Sunday next as we have a bye in the first round of the National Cup. We play the winners of the Aisling Annacotty vs Tralee Dynamos tie. We want all tickets for the FAI draw returned this weekend. Please make a special effort to sell your allocation as this will help kick start the club’s drive for a full size all-weather pitch to rival the facilities we played on on Monday night. Thank you to those who have already returned theirs.

(U15) Div 1 ; Park B 11-3 Iveragh United

This was our first game of the season and we got off to a fantastic start Connor Higgins opened the score for the park in the first minute ,Aarron takes a shot but the keeper makes a save . Park put the pressure on and from a free kick by Shane Nemanja scores his first goal. Dylan then puts in a great cross and Nemanja rounds a player and puts the ball in the net 3-0,A pass from Sean to Nemanja who passes to Connor rounds a player and puts it in the back of the net 4-0 It’s Park all the way and it’s not long before Nemanja gets his hatrick 5-0 Iveragh had an attack on the Park goal but is saved by keeper Diarmuid .

A bit of fancy footwork by Jamel sees his shot deflected for a corner ,James o,conner takes it and the ball is passed around and back out to James who puts it in the back of the net 6-0.Shane has a shot on goal but it’s going wide and Josh keeps it in and crosses it into the box and Edward scores 7-0. Jack beats a player and slots a pass into David Oba who scores 8-0 Park mount another attack passing the ball around Jack heads the ball onto David Oba who does a bicycle kick into the back of the net to make it 9-0 goal of the season so far. Second half and Park are on fire and with a nice bit of footwork Jamel finally gets his well deserved goal 10-0.

Fair play to Iveragh they kept their heads up and were rewarded with a goal 10-1, Mike Lacey has a shot on goal but the keeper makes a save .Sean puts the ball across the goal but Shane rounds a player shoots and goes wide.

Iveragh mount an attack and with a few passes the ball ends up in the back of the net 10-2 John Ward takes a shot but the keeper makes a great save to deny a goal Iveragh come back again with one of their rare attacks and score making it 10-3 just when we think it’s all over Shane gets the ball on the edge of the box rounds a couple of players and this time makes sure his shot is on target and ends the game 11-3.

This was a brilliant performance by the Park and great to see so many different scorers but it’s going to be a long season so let’s hope that we can maintain the winning ways.it was a team effort today and both Dave and myself were pleased with the way the players gave each other support and it paid off so well done lads. Today’s team was Diarmuid, jack, Josh, James, Dylan, Sean ,Connor, Nemanja, David, Edward, Craig, Aarron , Shane, , Jamel, John, Mike M.O.M. was Connor Higgins.

(U14) Div.2 ; Listowel Celtic C 5-3 St Brendans Park B

A great Morning for a game, spirits were high. We went out with the feeling of winning today, we got tip and off we went passing the ball but wasn’t long before Listowel Celtec scored, and again and again and again 4-0 within 20 minutes. Listowel had a strong team. We managed to get one back with a pass through from Samson to Carl (Cj) who had a battle but got through the defence and drove it into the top corner 4-1.

Both teams were still battling then Mark was able to get through and heading towards the Listowel goal kept his cool and placed it into the right hand corner to make it 4-2 which stayed till half time.

Second half we made a couple of changes, we went out having a great second half play soccer how it should be, Tony had the ball on the Left wing and from 20 yards out placed the ball in the back of the Listowel goal 4-3. We kept Listowel at bay and we tried to hard to equalize and with Listowel on the attack again, they drove the ball towards our goal which was a certainty and with a good stop on the line by Daniel got the ball out but unfortunately hit against Joe our keeper and went into our net 5-3. As i said,

Listowel had a strong team and was able to keep our chances out and with two narrow misses from Mark. Both Teams played great, well done too both. Final score 5-3. Well done lads. Players: Joe Hanafin,Richard O’Brien,Brian Teahan,Cillian Ryan, Daniel Fox-Seang,Samson Ayavi (Capt),Harris Ismail,Jack Murphy, Tony Duggan, Mark Dziedziuch,Carl(Cj)Dziedziuch, Tennyson Efgbare, Josh Hayes,Luke Murphy, Thomas Eniola and Alex Rogojchin. Man of the Match: Samson Ayavi.

(U14) Div 2 ; Park B 11-0 Tralee Dynamos B

Not a bad day weather wise for a game, we had a slow start all lads were excited playing good soccer from both sides, someone had to break the ice. Dynamo’s had a goal kick which Mark headed it to Samson who laid it on to Jack who set Mark up to slip it into the right corner 1-0, time to rock and roll. With Samson in midfield and Richard got the ball to Jack who took on the Dynamo’s defence and placed it into the corner of the goal 2-0.

Our defence was outstanding with Josh, Brian, Daniel and Cillian kept the Dynamo’s at bay with a nice pass from Josh to Tony who then had a strike from the corner of the box which went into the right corner of the net 3-0, passing the ball around Mark got the ball too Tony who then brought it into the Dynamo’s box to Mark who was in the right place to receive the ball from Tony and placed it into the right corner once again. 4-0 Half time .

Second half we came out blazing, passing the ball and a few confrontations from the Dynamos we started to get back into the game, passing the ball around from defence to wings with a nice pass from Tony into the box and a neat header from Mark into the top of the net 5-0. Dynamos had another attack but yet again our defence was too strong with Daniel and Thomas keeping the Dynamo’s out playing the ball to Samson who was like a steam train going through the Dynamo’s midfield and defence setting Mark up who placed the ball into the top corner 6-0.

We then had a few changes in positions, passing the ball about Daniel had a strike and with a deflection of the Dynamo’s defence sent it into the net 7-0. We had another attack on goal with a nice pass yet again from Josh to Tony who sent it to Brian who then placed the ball into the net 8-0. We kept calm and Samson was determind to score but set Tony up for number 9, 9-0.Park dominated the field and with Carl (Cj) setting Tennyson up who took a strike and into the back of the net it went 10-0.

With a few nice passes Samson got the ball ploughed through the midfield and defence to put the ball into the back of the net. At last 11-0. Well done lads, Motm: Daniel Fox-Seang . Players: Joe,Josh,Brian,Daniel,Cillian,Samson(Capt) Richard,Tony,Harris,Mark,Jack,Carl(Cj),Tennyson,Luke and Thomas.
Once again, well done lads. Proud off you all.

(U13) SFAI Cup : Tralee Dynamos 0 – 3 Park FC

This was the 1st competitive game of the new season and what a better motivator than a local derby match against our neighbours Tralee Dynamos in the 1st Round of the National Cup. The Park lads were coming off a sucessful series of preseason friendlies with Dynamos looking for revenge from a 1/4 K-cup defeat last season. The Park lads were playing into a stiff breeze and made a good positive, composed start to the game creating a few half chances for the front men of Mervyn & Sean. The centre midfield pairing of colin and junior were battling hard in front of the back four with incisive pasing out wide with Mervyn tireless working both wings and thru the centre as the link man to the No 9 Sean who was making his compeditive debut for the Park.

Both wingers Nathan and Liam were working the lines beautifully, tracking back constantly to support the full backs of Darragh and Rhys. It was a tough affair but the Park lads were creating the better chances and you felt a goal was going to come and 8 mins in Mervyn became the provider with a dinky lob over the dynamos defence into Sean who placed a delicate chip over the keeper to back of the net, 1-0 up and this was the tonic the park needed, now playing with confidence and creating further chances from Nathan and Colin.

To be fair to Dynamos they battled hard and were creating chances of their own from the main threat on right wing Sean kennedy, but the park central defence of Cian & Kevin (also making his debut in a Park shirt) and left full back Rhys were equal to the challenge with Darragh providing good cover and all four defended their lines with great authority. It looked like it was going to be 1-0 to park at half time but mervin had other ideas and 3 mins to half time it took the ball from defence on the right and after a 60yd run fired the ball from right outside the box to beat the keeper with Sean smashing the ball to the back of the net ensuring a 2-0 lead to the Park. 2mins later on the stroke of halftime nathan whipped a pinpoint cross from the right to Liam who had ran into centre who slid the ball across the box to Sean, one on one with the keeper, only outcome was a goal, 3-0 to the Park at the break.

A great sporting gesture as Sean . With a 3 goal advantage The Park were brimming with confidence and carried on thru the 2nd half as they had finished the 1st half with a swagger that created a lot of chances but failed to convert. Dynamos were always a threat from set pieces particularily in the 2 nd half and were close to scoring a couple of times but the park defence were resilient and working hard to clear their lines and with Gavin on top form in goals it was a titanic achievement to keep a clean sheet against the league champions.

Conor came on up front with Greg on the left to add another dimension as the Park tried to close out the game. Defensive changes were made with Tide & Elliot coming into fullback positions to give fresh legs to relieve a tireless display from Rhys/Darragh. Nathan H made his debut coming in to central defence for Cian who had been a rock through out the game. 3- 0 the final score and a deserved win for the Park team who battled hard in all sectors of the pitch and are rewarded with a 2nd round match at home v Abbeyfeale FC.

Team sport has a habit of bringing the best out of lads which can create strong bonding and team spirit and this was to be shown in the dressing room after the game in particular a truly great sporting gesture from Sean Mc who didnt claim his hatrickbut instead insisted that for the 2nd goal the ball was over the line from Mervyn’s shot before he smashed it home.

Thats Team Spirit!!!

Players of Note: Liam, Sean, Colin, Kevin, Cian, Junior, Nathan,Rhys . Man of the Match: Mervyn Shalemba, a fantastic display, gut bursting runs through the middle and wings, battled hard to turn over possession time and time again upfront. With a goal assist and a superb individual strike himself cemented this MOTM performance. Squad on the Day: Gavin Doody, Cian Purcell, Darragh Moriarty, Kevin Goulding, Rhys Keane, Junior Ankomah, Colin Walsh, Mervyn Shalemba, , Nathan Gleeson, Liam Tobin, Sean McGrath , Nathan Holden,Greg Scanlon, Conor O’ Sullivan, Elliot Lynch, Tide Osinubi

REPORTS ;

(Senior) Premier A ;

Park Fc 4-4 Killarney Athletic ,

The Park made hard work of rescuing a point from this 4 all draw at home against Killarney Athletic . Having conceded an early goal after 10 minutes , we found ourselves chasing the game. This shocked us into a smarted type of game. Despite having a period of dominance we found it difficult to break Killarney Athletic down. Eventually after 25 minutes David Courtney chipped a magnificent pass through to Fergal Maunsell who did a carbon copy when he chipped Athletic’s keeper for what was to b the first equalizer of the game.

We again paid the price for being slow in closing down the opposition leaving them to retake the lead with 38 minutes gone in the half. We went into the second half still trying to impose our game on the visitors but to no avail and Killarney Athletic then further extended their lead to 3-1 after 65 minutes . It was beginning to look ominous for us at this point and our problem’s were further exasperated when we lost Mark O Sullivan with a Red Card. We maintained our composure dispute this significant set back. Fergal Ryan replaced David Courtney after 72 minutes.

Con Barrett header rebounded off the crossbar from a set piece on 74 minutes . Shortly after this the play was stopped for 7 minutes because the match ball had to b rescued from high bushes. Con Barrett was the climber supported by David Rogers and George. We worked our way back into the game and maintained constant pressure on the visitors 18 yard area for the final 15 minutes . This pressure eventually paid off when from yet another set piece, Fergal Maunsell’s free kick broke out to Stefan Okunbor who duly obliged with a well taken second goal.

We were back on an equal footing at long last when Con Barrett scored our third on 80 minutes . Within 5 minutes we conceded a fourth . This was like a back to the future in earnest, not good for the heart. But the best was yet to come when we’re awarded a free on the edge of the Killarney Athletic 18 yard box. Fergal Maunsell scored a brilliant equalizing goal into the top right hand corner in the 88th minute to cap an overall star performance. Man of the Match David Rogers.

(U12A) Pre Season win in Listowel,

The U12a travelled to Listowel on a sun drenched Wednesday evening to play the third instalment of there pre season campaign against Listowel u12a . As anyone who has been to Listowel will know that the pitches are probably the best in the county and with the glorious weather we’ve been having it was the perfect setting for a great game of soccer which we all had the pleasure to witnessing. Listowel had the better of the early exchanges bringing the best out of our ‘players player of the year’ Sean Broderick , firstly saving a blistering drive that was heading towards the top corner but some how sean got his right arm firmly behind the ball to turn it over the bar then another reaction save low in the crowded penalty area.

We took the lead through Graham Sheehy who scored a wonderful left footed lob from well outside after great work from Martin Laucher who then himself made it 2 nil with a neat finish. The third soon followed from left back Darragh Caplis whose surging run was well picked out by Robert Vasiu’s lovely reverse pass into Darragh’s stride which he then took one touch out of his feet to slot home a fantastic finish. 3-nil at the break.

Listowel pulled a goal back but the boys showed no sign of complacency setting in when the new recruit Sean Brosnan hit an unstoppable shot right in to the top corner no keeper would have have stopped it unbelievable strike to add the forth and Jamie Fitzgerald added the fifth when he cooly went round the keeper to slide the ball towards the goal from an extremely tight angle. Listowel got a consolation in stoppage time the full time score was 5-2.

Man of the match was impossible to call so it went to both Sean Broderick our keeper for some vital save at vital stages in the game and Sean Brosnan who was very assured anchoring the midfield his debut.

IT was Ladies Day yesterday at Killarney Races and despite a local woman picking up the top prize, Tralee girls went all out in the style stakes.

Denise Healy from Killarney was judged the winner by broadcaster Kathryn Thomas and Rose of Tralee Haley O’Sullivan.

Denise, who is engaged to Kerry footballer Aidan O’Mahony, won an all-expenses paid five day trip for two to Paris.

“I am delighted, it is a real honour and an all-time dream to win. I come every year, my inspiration for my style comes from my late Mum and my sister,” said Denise.

There was more luck for Killarney when when the runner-up in the Queen of Fashion contest went to Christine Hegarty, while the winner of the most stylish hat was Ellen O’Donnell from Cashel, Co Tipperary who will enjoy a five-day luxury trip for two to Milan.

The runner-up in the most stylish hat contest was Marguerite Brosnan from Killarney.

So, no Tralee winners then but the ladies enjoyed amazing day of racing with the sun shining, the grandstands and hospitality suites full, and aprés-race parties aplenty in the hotels around the famed tourist town.
