Investigation Into Alleged Racist Verbal Attack On Rose Of Tralee

.

GARDAI in Kilkenny are investigating after allegations of a racist verbal attack on the new Rose of Tralee, Kirsten Mate Maher.

According to the RTE website, it is alleged Ms Maher and her boyfriend were abused by two male customers in a fast food takeaway on John Street, Kilkenny at around 3am on Sunday.

One man is alleged to have racially abused her before her boyfriend intervened asking him to cease, but a second man then became involved.

It is understood gardaí were called to the takeaway and took statements from those present.

Steve Cronly of the Rose of Tralee festival committee said Ms Maher would not be making any comment on the matter.

IT’S slowly sinking in for Kirsten Mate Maher that she is the new Rose of Tralee and one of her first engagements was the annual photoshoot in the Rose Garden in the town park on Wednesday morning.

The 21 year old, originally from Mullinavat in Kilkenny but now living in Waterford City, didn’t get much sleep last night but she was utterly charming and beaming as she posed for photos and chatted to locals and tourists in the park.

She also spoke to the assembled press and said that despite being offered a place in Waterford IT on Monday, she has not made any decision on whether she’ll take it in September.

“I don’t really have a plan at the moment. I need to sit down and have a think. I’m still completely in shock,” said Kirsten, who has had an incredible time in Tralee over the past week.

“It’s been crazy, the most wonderful crazy though, it’s such a great festival. If I have any advice to give anyone it’s to come down and experience the Rose of Tralee festival, because I used to just watch it on the telly. There really is so much work done by the volunteers here. The Dome goes from being a catwalk one night to a banquet for hundreds of people the next.”

Kirsten was also asked about her African roots as her father is from Zambia.

“I’m really proud of my Zambian roots, my family there are really delighted. My dad was only over there last month and explained it all to them. It’s lovely that I can say I’m the first ever African-Irish Rose and the 60th Rose of Tralee,” said Kirsten who is hoping to get to Zambia in the next year.

However, Kirsten says being a person of mixed race shouldn’t be an issue nowadays in modern Ireland and would prefer if the media didn’t focus on that.

“I don’t think it’s something I should be singled out by. There are so many different races here it’s mad that we have to be surprised that there’s a person of colour or mixed race in the Rose of Tralee. I’m hoping that it might encourage more people to put themselves forward for it.”

Pieta House is close to her heart and she is concerned at the prevalence of suicide in Ireland and hopes to work with them over the coming year.

“I held my 21st birthday as a fundraiser [for Pieta House]. We raised over €1,500. I can’t wait to do more. They do the most amazing work, over 800 people were helped in Waterford last year,” she said.

And then she was off for a busy day of engagements as the 60th Rose of Tralee. It won’t be long sinking in that she’ll be much in demand over the next year.

And The Winner Is…Waterford!

KIRSTEN Mate Maher from Waterford is the new Rose of Tralee. It’s the third time a Waterford Rose has won. Orla Burke won in 1977 and Brenda Hyland in 1983.

There were emotional scenes as the 21 years old from the Deise heard her name called out by Daithi O Se in Tuesday night at the Dome. Kirsten is the  first African-Irish contestant to win as her mother is Irish and father is from Zambia originally.

Kirsten was looking forward to attending Waterford Institute of Technology in September to study Multimedia and Application Development with a view to pursuing a career in computer programming.

She sings with the island of Ireland Peace Choir which was formed in the wake of The Omagh bombing Co. Tyrone 1998.

She plays hockey with Waterford Ladies 1st team and we are currently competing at Munster Division 1 level.

She has a big love for animals, especially horses and dogs and has been horse riding since she was five years old.

The Roses Of 1998 Catch Up After 20 Years

THE Rose of Tralee festival has always been an opportunity for former Roses to come back to town to relive some wonderful memories.

This was certainly the case for many of the 1998 contestants who gathered over the weekend to look back on what for many was a life-changing experience.

We caught up with them at Maddens on Milk Market Lane on Friday last where we found out the Kerry Rose of 1998, Rebekah Wall from Tralee, was one of the ladies behind the reunion.

Continued below…

.

“Liz Gavin, the Belgium Rose, Orla Cusack of Waterford and Katie McMahon the New York Rose and I were chatting about meeting together again. So we decided to meet not only for a reunion, but also about possibly developing an organisation for past Roses who want to cross-collaborate in business. All these women here are really accomplished in business,” said Rebekah.

Over 20 of the 32 Roses returned and remarkably,  two of the Roses just found out at the reunion that they live a five minute drive from each other 0ver in the US.

The Leeds Rose Siobhan McMahon (nee Harrington) ended up marrying the New York Rose, Katie McMahon’s brother after meeting at the Festival and they now live in Northern Virginia, just minutes away from Washington DC Rose, Emilia Cirkur’s home.

“It’s great to see them all come back,” said Rebekah, who is confident that there will be a business run by former Roses, based in Madden’s, set up before the end of the year.

THE Kerry Rose charmed the audience in the Dome on Monday night as she was interviewed live on stage by Dáithí.

The 25 year old from Foilmore looked beautiful in a red dress and also cleared up that she isn’t from Cahersiveen, but from Foilmore, a short distance away.

Celine, who was the second Rose interviewed on the night, spoke about dementia in Ireland and the amazing facilities they have in St Luke’s Home in Cork where she works as a social care worker working as a Dementia activities facilitator.

.

“The focus is on the quality of life for the residents. It’s not just the physical needs but also the psychological needs. The need for closeness, the need for identity, the need to basically be seen as a person,” she said.

It was also revealed that her mom Eileen was a festival queen in Waterville back in the 1970s, which is a good omen for tonight.

Celine said her brother Kieran was watching from Canada while she was also supported by brother Shane, her two sister in laws Tracy and Courtney and three little nephews…and the whole of Kerry of course!

Daithi asked if she felt any pressure being the Kerry Rose.

“I don’t really see it as pressure. Especially since we got to Tralee I’m bursting with pride, with the values of what it means to be Kerry…I’m so proud of this festival it brings so many communities together, generations and families together. It’s everything I always thought it would be in terms of the magic,” she said.

“There’s little girls coming up to you looking for autographs and I’m looking at them thinking about how excited I was if a Rose even looked at me,” said Celine, who explained she came to town many times to get those autographs. A great interview then and a worthy successor to all the other Kerry Roses down the years.

THE most glamorous night of the year in Kerry didn’t disappoint last night as well over a thousand people converged on the Dome for the Rose Ball.

A champagne reception greeted the guests as they entered the venue and they were entertained by a wonderful opening act of music and dancing inspired by ‘The Greatest Showman’ musical.

Guests who paid €150 a ticket enjoyed a starter plate of goats cheese, paté and black pudding courgette, followed by a champagne sorbet, fillet steak or hake and a raspberry pannacotta.

ROSE FESTIVAL: Five Things To See And Do Today

TraleeToday.ie’s coverage of the Rose of Tralee International Festival is brought to you by AIB Tralee

.

Saturday of the festival always draws the biggest crowds to town thanks to the parade, but there’s loads to see and do before and after it…

1. Hit the market…

It’s proving a big hit already, but there should be a great atmosphere in town for the market today, the busiest day of the festival. Get a burger, have a seat on the Mall and enjoy the people watching for a while.

2. Learn about road safety…

You’ll have the chance to use the ‘Roll Over Simulator’ when An Garda Síochána and Road Safety Authority (RSA) bring a display and information stand to the small Tesco car park in the town centre between 10am and 6pm today.

The interactive road safety experience simulator is highly effective in encouraging people to use safety belts. The simulator is a car body fitted to a rotating hydraulic platform.  Participants sit into the simulator and experience a half or a full rotation.

The ‘simulation’ demonstrates how it would feel if you were in a car which turned over in a collision, and the lifesaving benefits of wearing a seatbelt should this occur.

Demonstrations using life size mannequins will also show what happens to a person when they are not wearing a seatbelt.

.

3. Family entertainment…

It goes without saying that there’s family fun, music and fantastic entertainment all over Tralee again during the day in the Town Park, The Square and along the streets. Family Town in the park is the highlight though with loads to see and do.

4. The Parade…

Just pray the rain stays away until after 10pm.  It’s always a colourful highlight for all the family and culminates in a spectacular fireworks display. It’s due to start at 8.30pm but get down early if the little ones want a good view.

5. “Hey now, hey now!”…

There’s loads of music on the streets after the parade, but the highlight has to be the Neil Diamond Tribute in The Square.

Expect hands-a-swaying to ‘Forever In Blue Jeans’, ‘Sweet Caroline’, ‘Cracklin Rosie’ and many more hits from 10.30pm. A must for all ages.

ROSE FESTIVAL: A Busy Day Of Fun Around Town

FRIDAY saw big crowds in the town centre as the festival fun kicked off in earnest.

The stalls were set up in the town centre — this year facing on to the shops on the Mall — and the sweet aromas of various foods filled the air.

The AIB stand proved very popular thanks to the presence of Kerry GAA legend Colm Cooper who chatted with passers-by and posed for photographs.

A nice feature on The Mall this year is a seating area for diners who were treated to live music at lunchtime.

The Town Park was buzzing with Family Town kicking off and another Kerry legend, Aidan O’Mahony, made sure people were kept on their toes with a special fitness class. The Rose escorts and Rosebuds especially enjoyed the fun.

Meanwhile, host of the Rose of Tralee Selection nights, Dáithí Ó Sé, was up in Baile Mhuire Day Care Centre where he chatted to the clients.

With the fun continuing into the night with music on Denny Street, The Square and elsewhere, it’s a great start to the Festival. Scroll down for photos…

WHILE the Roses have been here since Wednesday, for many the festival really kicks off today with the food stalls, street entertainment and Family Town in the Town Park in place for the next five days.

An added attraction at Páirc An Phiarsaigh this year is the Luminarium which was visited by some of the Roses last night.

A phenomenon of light, the Miracoco Luminarium is an inflatable architectural walk-in sculpture offering customers of any age a sensory experience of light, colour and sound. There will be a €5 admission fee to enter Miracoco which will open from 12pm to 6pm daily.

He will run two fitness events which will be complemented by Junior Yoga and Zumba and the weekly Junior parkrun on Sunday.

Within Tesco Family Town, spectacular visuals created by Buí Bolg, daily performances from magicians, acrobats and street theatre performers will complement the usual workshops in Arts & Crafts, Drama and pottery.

Children can look forward to being entertained by all the characters of the Family show twice daily along with Bouncy world, Dog Shows, Fancy Dress and the Mini Petting Zoo.

If you need a break from all the activities, mums, dads and the children can relax in the new Picnic Plaza with a variety of gourmet food options, many of which will be healthy, from the Food market.

Tesco will also bring their American Airstream to Family Town over the weekend of the festival where a whole range of tasty treats will be served to festival-goers. So Tralee really is the place for families over the next five days.

EVERY year there’s a number of Rose of Tralee contestants with links to Kerry and of course this year is no different.

We caught up with a few of them when they arrived at The Rose Hotel on Wednesday evening. The San Francisco Rose is 26 year old Annie Powers.

“My mother’s grandparents came from Castleisand. I have cousins, the Maguires, coming to see me from Kerry so I’m excited about meeting them here. It’s been a wonderful week so far, the adventure of a lifetime,” said Annie, who works in Business Development.

“My mom Margaret and dad Gerry are both from Ballyduff. I moved to Boston six years ago with a view to coming home but I’m still there. This week has been fabulous. I landed in Dublin on Saturday morning and it’s been non-stop since!” said Sorcha, whose dad Gerry, a contractor in London, is a former London-Kerry Association Person Of the Year Award recipient.

Galway Rose, Deirdre O’Sullivan, knows Tralee very well and has seen many a Rose festival down the years.

“My grandparents would have grown up in Denny Street — Dr George Lyons and Dr Finn Lyons. They worked in the Bon Secours. My dad’s side of the family own the Beaufort Bar. We used to come down to Denny Street all the time during the summer. The town park was like a front garden for us!” said the primary school teacher who works in Dublin. She said she is really enjoying the experience.

Celine said the couple of months have been amazing fulfilling engagements as Kerry Rose.

As for the week ahead?

“I can’t wait. I really don’t know what to expect but I do know it’s going to be amazing,” said Celine. Best of luck to her as we’re sure she’ll do a fantastic job.

ROSE COUNTDOWN: A Wondrous Experience Of Light And Colour In Luminarium

.
How the MIRACOCO Luminarium looks from the outside.

THE Rose of Tralee International Festival has been one of the most colourful events on the Irish festivals calendar for nearly 60 years, but this year’s Festival will bring colour to a whole new level.

The MIRACOCO Luminarium, by Architects of Air, is a fun-filled, monumental inflatable walk-in sculpture designed to generate a sense of wonder at the beauty of light and colour.

It will be located in Páirc an Phiarsaigh on lower Denny Street, between 12pm and 6pm from Friday, August 17 to Monday, August 20.

Continued below…

.
The interior of the Miracoco Luminarium.

The Communications Manager for the Rose of Tralee International Festival, John Drummey, said: “We are very excited about the arrival of the luminarium to this year’s Rose of Tralee. Festival-goers will lose themselves, metaphorically speaking, in a dazzling maze of winding paths and soaring domes. It promises to be the star attraction during this year’s Street Festival and we hope that locals and visitors of all ages take some time to visit the Miracoco Luminarium in Páirc an Phiarsaigh.”

So what is a luminarium? It is an original modular design that can be configured according to different site requirements. Each luminarium is made up of around 20 elements that are zipped together on site to typically occupy an area of 1000 square metres. Easy to erect, laying out the structure and anchoring can take as little as 4 hours then, in just 20 minutes, the luminarium is inflated to its monumental size.

The spectacular interior.

The domes rise up to 10 metres high and provide the main focal points. The convoluted tunnels determine the journey the visitor will take. The luminaria also feature at least 30 ‘pods’ that are alcoves where people can sit and relax out of the way of the other visitors.

The installation awakens all the senses, creating a sense of wonder and enchantment for all ages. Visitors are transported and immersed into an amazing world of light and subtle and saturated hues, for a unique sensory experience, and brings visual art in places where you wouldn’t expect it.

It is a paradox that such a stimulating environment can simultaneously be so calming and comforting. Many people find the luminarum a place for rest or meditation.

Admission to the MIRACOCO luminarium is only €5 per person, while toddlers aged 2 and under are FREE. It is fully accessible to wheelchair users and people with mobility difficulties. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult (a minimum of 1 adult for up to 4 children).

It will be open daily from 12pm to 6pm from Friday 17th to Monday 20th August in Páirc an Phiarsaigh.

Call For Businesses To Give Financial Support For Festival’s Street Entertainment

The organisers of the 2018 Rose of Tralee Festival are calling on the businesspeople in Tralee to contribute to the Street Entertainment will cost €355,000 to present a line-up of family-friendly, free and affordable fun from 17 to 21 August. EXCITEMENT is already building ahead of the start of the Rose of Tralee International Festival and an appeal has gone out to local businesses and professionals to give financial support to fund the free street entertainment laid on during the week.

The street entertainment alone will cost €355,000 this year to present a line-up of family-friendly, free and affordable fun from Friday August 17, to Tuesday, August 21.

Therefore, a significant increase in financial support is required and Festival organisers are asking local businesses for their support again in 2018, with every Euro contributed set to be invested directly into staging so many events on Tralee’s streets.

The Managing Director of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Anthony O’Gara, said: “We are grateful to our partners in the local business community for their contributions towards the Rose of Tralee Street Festival in the past. The collection from them raised €40,000 towards the Festival Street Entertainment costs in 2017. This year’s Street Events will cost €355,000. Contributing to and organising the funding of the balance of €315,000 is placing a heavy burden on the Rose of Tralee. It stifles our capacity to develop the overall event for the benefit of town and county. This is a town partnership endeavour, and the commitment and participation of businesses in the town and surrounding areas is so important.”

The High Kings, Jake Carter, Sean and Conor Price, Hermitage Green – all will perform free on Denny Street during this year’s Festival.

The amazing inflatable world of light and colour, the Miracoco Luminarium, will span the length and breadth of Páirc an Phiarsaigh while Tesco Family Town will be bigger and better than ever.

The Festival organisers say it would not be possible to offer such variety on Tralee’s streets without sponsorship and the backing of local businesses, many of whom rely on a successful Festival for their own bottom line and said a significant number of businesses and professionals in Tralee and its environs give nothing and let their fellow citizens carry the burden of helping to fund the event.

They are making a special appeal to those people and to everyone in business to make a reasonable contribution to the event.

“As it stands financial support to the Festival from business people outside the town and county is over four times more than the local contribution. That imbalance is not healthy and we would hope that this appeal will help to create an awareness of the importance of supporting an event that highlights so much that is positive about Tralee,” said Anthony O’Gara.

Contributions towards this year’s street festival may be made by cash or cheque, payable to: Kerry Rose Festival Ltd, Ashe Memorial Hall, Denny Street, Tralee, Co Kerry.
