Reports to the AGM:
This week we have extracts from the health and well-being report. Health and well-being and community engagement has always been part of Tralee Parnell’s ethos.

As a Club we want to ensure that everyone who engages with our club benefits from the experience in a health-enhancing way – be they members, players, supporters or members of our community.

In working to ensure this as a club we decided to submit an application to take part in phase 2 of the GAA’s Healthy Club Project.

This initiative aims to highlight the excellent work already being done by GAA clubs in the area of health promotion while allowing them to identify specific areas they would like to focus on improving on.

On the 8th of February Tralee Parnell’s were 1 of 60 clubs across Ireland accepted to take part in phase 2 of the GAA’s Healthy Clubs Project initiative.  On Feb 20th Agnes and I attended the National Healthy Club Orientation Day in Croke Park.

This outlined the key aims of initiative: Facts and figures were outlined emphasising the benefits of being involved in sports/clubs in terms of health and wellbeing. It outlined the bigger picture of the role of the club, emphasising the need to nurture and grow all aspects of our club with the broader aim of developing each member and catering for the needs of wider community.

It outlined key areas at a national level which the GAA work on including physical activity, mental fitness, smoking, alcohol & drug misuse, diet & nutrition, gambling addiction, training and personal development and community development.

It then focused on 4 broad areas which clubs could look at incorporating healthy practices into everyday activities. Physical activity & fitness, Diet & nutrition, Mental health, Social initiatives.

It outlined the criteria necessary to meet the requirements of the project see copy of handout attached. It provided information on submitting evidence on the online portal to receive recognition.

On the 6th May we launched the Healthy Club Project alongside our club plan with a live Zumba session for all. We also introduced our healthy food options providing fruit/water on the night.

Following on from this we established a HCP team which is one of the criteria of being involved in the project: Dermot Reen (Chairperson), Agnes Sheehy, Ann Moynihan, Lil Hannafin and Roz Fitzgerald.

On 1st June The HCP team held a meeting and drafted a project plan looking at key areas and initiatives we could run during the year to enhance the experience and wellbeing of our club members.

Looking at the project plan now we have managed to address some of the key objectives e.g. liase with HSE health promotion unit, provide healthy food options at club blitzes and provided field talks from local organisations.

On the 22nd July Tralee Parnell’s received letter form GAA president Aogán Ó Fearghail congratulating Tralee Parnell’s on the club’s work in relation to the Healthy Club project.

On Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd October Health & Wellbeing officer attended GAA Health and Wellbeing Conference in Croke Park. This conference provided training on using the Portal.

Key speakers promoting the benefits of being involved in sports and the transferability of key skills to all aspects of life. Fantastic speaker professor Niall Mona DCU – videos to be uploaded to GAA website/portal.
