WHILE the weather did its best to scupper the schedule, Tralee school teams still lined out this afternoon in Corn Uí Mhúirí Quarter-Final football action.

Tralee CBS faced Abbey CBS of Tipperary at an astro-pitch in the North Campus of UL having been moved from Rathkeale due to frozen ground.

A goal from Sean Barrett midway through the first half set the Tralee side on their way, putting them three points ahead and they never looked back. They led 1-5 to 0-4 at the short whistle and pulled away as the second half going on to win by 2-13 to 1-5.

Meanwhile, Mercy Mounthawk  took on St. Francis College Rochestown in Pairc Ui Chaoimh’s all-weather pitch, the fixture having been moved from Mallow.

Like The Green, Mounthawk led by four points at half-time (0-6 to 0-2). A goal soon after the restart from Odhran Ferris set them on their way and they added points to race into a 1-9 to 0-3 lead.

However the Cork side responded with two quick goals that had them right back in it and with 15 minutes to go were just two behind (1-9 to 2-4).

The Tralee side showed their character though and extended their lead again with timely points and when Jake Hoare scored on 26 minutes they were safe. Tomás Kennedy guaranteed the win with another goal with just minute to go. A late consolation goal for St Francis made the final score 3-12 to 3-6.

It’s been a good week on the sporting front for Mounthawk as the basketballers won an All-Ireland title on Monday, so the footballers will be hoping to emulate that success in the coming weeks.

An all-Kerry schools semi-final line-up remains a possibility as the other quarter-finals between St Brendan’s Killarney and Clonakilty CC  and Colaiste na Sceilge and Patrician Academy Mallow had to be postponed due to the weather.
