Tralee Students Off To Dublin For BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition

THE 2024 BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE) is almost upon us, taking place in Dublin from tomorrow until Saturday and Tralee will be well represented.

President Michael D. Higgins will officially open the 2024 exhibition tomorrow at a special ceremony for students, teachers, and partners. The ceremony will be streamed live on the BTYSTE website and on Facebook Live from 2pm.

There were 2,042 project entries submitted by 4,166 students from 343 schools from across the island of Ireland and 27 of those entries are from Kerry. Three Tralee schools will have 12 projects competing at event with seven from Mercy Mounthawk, four from CBS The Green and one from Presentation Secondary School.

Mercy Mounthawk’s entries are ‘How can the mechanics in origami be applied to modern engineering’ in the Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences category; ‘Have We Gone WHEY Too Far?’ in the Health & Wellbeing category; ‘Investigating the public awareness of autism and attitudes toward ASD-related topics’ in the Social & Behavioural Sciences category; ‘An investigation into which Probiotic is best for your Gut Health’ in the Health & Wellbeing category; ‘Using game theory to solve Catan’ in the Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences category; Defibrillator Dispatch Droid: ‘The Future of Cardiac First Response’ in the Technology category and Investigation Into the Health Benefits of Algal Pigments’ in the Chemical, Physical & Mathematical Sciences category.

The four CBS The Green entries are — ‘A Mobility/Care Assister’ in the Technology category; ‘Enhancing Soil Health and Crop Growth Through Natural Soil Enhancers: A Comparative Study’ in the Biological & Ecological category; ‘Designing and creating an AI platform which can aid in differentiating learning in mixed ability classrooms in a constructive learning setting’ in the Technology category and ‘Slaying the Educational Leviathan: A Study on Transforming Education for Sustainable Global Citizenship in the Social & Behavioural Sciences category.

Presentation Secondary School Tralee has one entry — ‘ACT {Aid, Care, Treat} – an immediate, accessible, technological aid to assist in emergencies, supported by a comprehensive repository of medical information’ in the Health & Wellbeing category.

Meanwhile Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine lead the way for Kerry with ten entries, Presentation Secondary School Listowel have two entries with Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Tarbert Comprehensive School and Community College Killorglin with one each.

A judging panel of 85 experts from the world of STEM and business will have the challenging task of choosing over 200 prize winners, including the overall BT Young Scientist and Technologist (s) of the Year, awarded €7,500. The overall winner(s) will be announced at an awards ceremony on Friday, January 12 at 5:30pm and will once again represent Ireland at the EUCYS which will take place this year in the European City of Science 2024 – Katowice, Poland.
