THE work on a proposed walk and cycle way between Tralee and Fenit has stopped because of lack of funding say Kerry County Council.

Answering a question from Cllr Pa Daly, Council management outlined the reason why work had stopped on the walkway.

“It is unlikely that there will be much progress on the project in the short and medium term as the resources are not currently available to progress the project and there is no imminent prospect of funding for the project”

There are a number of ongoing issues on the Fenit side such as landowners claiming squatters rights and the council acquiring owners rights from the land owned by CIE.

Part of the walkway affectionately known locally as the ‘Skinny Mile’ is in use however, and stretches from the bottom of Oakpark Road to Mounthawk.

  2. It’s clearly a fantastic idea to have a walk/cycle link from tralee to fenit. Our families and children need safe places to excercise and this land is the perfect passage. European funding can be achieved if the will is there. Landowners at the Fenit end bought their own land, not the CIE land and shouldn’t have a say in this.

  3. Truth be told, if the government officials in charge of this project were actually committed to it, the cycle path and walk way would have been completed summers ago. The government should be instilling its people with hope, not depending on its people’s sense of disenfranchisement. (If only the walkway were a bank, then it would get a surplus of funds.) Once we fail to measure our country by the health of its humanity, then we’ve already fallen down the rat hole.
