THE ‘Moving On’ employment programme, which offers women free training, support and links with employers, has been successful in securing PEIL funding for the next three years up to Autumn 2022.

Supported by NEWKD, the programme, which starts again in Tralee in January, is looking for new recruits and will host a free information session next week in Tralee.

“The Moving On programme is going from strength to strength with almost 110 participants having completed the programme so far. Moving On is an exciting employment programme for women in Kerry now in its 3rd year.  The next programme starts in January 2020. As places are limited, women are encouraged to get in touch as soon as possible,” said Employment Support Worker, Lisa O’Flaherty.

“The programme offers women training, support and links with employers. There is a strong focus in building confidence and making career choices.”

The Moving On programme is managed by Project Co-ordinator Lisa Fingleton and Lisa O’Flaherty and is based in the NEWKD offices in Listowel.

Both have extensive experience in recruitment and supporting women back to work. Already 52 women are working and many more have gone onto further education.

According to Lisa O’Flaherty; “The response from employers has been fantastic. Employers are realising the benefits of being more flexible with their hours and offering part time work options. By doing this, they are tapping into a huge resource of skilled workers. Many women took time out to care for children or other family members and are now ready and committed to returning to work”.

The programme is very interactive and responds the needs of the participants. There is a strong sense of solidarity and the women support each other to find out about jobs and get ready for interviews. The programme works in partnership with the IT Tralee and KETB to provide Information Technology Skills. The Moving On programme works closely with Kerry Business Women’s Network (KBWN) and other projects within NEWKD.

The next programme starts in late January 2020 and will run in Tralee. There will be free 2-hour ‘Moving On’ information/registration mornings on Friday 15th November and the 6th December 2019, from 10.00am-12.00pm at Aras an Phobail/ NEWKD, Tralee.

As places are very limited, it is important for women to register early for these events. To book your place contact: Lisa O’Flaherty 087 764 7446 lisaoflaherty@newkd.ie

ADULTS with physical and mental disabilities from all over the county are encouraged to come along to a club night in Tralee next month.

Organised by service users in Enable Ireland Tralee, ‘Rise’, which takes place on Saturday, December 14 in Benners Hotel, will give a chance for adults to enjoy a night out in a club environment with their peers and have some fun.

Conagh Forbes of Enable Ireland Kerry Services explained the idea behind the night, which is spearheaded by service users Tommy Cole and Josh Moore.

“It’s been done in Cork and Galway and we knew that there was a need for a safe space where people who may be viewed as vulnerable to come out and party. The boys [Tommy and Josh] were talking about it with a view to meeting other people, developing relationships and have fun safely.”

“It went on from there so we approached Orlagh Winters of Benners and she booked us in. Laura Hartnett did the graphic design for the posters and Tralee Printers did the printing for us,” she said.

“On the night, the lights will be brighter and the music will be a bit lower. We’re conscious that some people might feel a little overwhelmed, so there’ll also be a chill-out area and Ray Stack will be the DJ,” said Conagh.

Conagh is also hoping that this won’t be a one-off event and it will become a community initiative, with partners coming on board to help transport adults with physical and mental disabilities from all part of the county to club nights or to help with organising the events.

Tommy Cole from Tralee says he’s looking forward to the night. “We haven’t seen an event like this in Kerry. It makes it easier for people who can’t go to clubs to experience a night out. Something like this allows us to have some fun. I just hope people come!” he said.

Josh Moore from Dingle will be the MC on the night and says it’s going to be a great event.

“Oh yeah, it’ll be somewhere where I’ll fit in more. I won’t be the only disabled person there because we’re all in the same boat and we can feel more comfortable talking to each other,” said Josh, who might even do a bit of freestyle rapping on the night.

Service users in other community groups like Inspired and the National Learning Network are also set to attend. Tickets are €7 (with support buddy going in for free) and it begins at 8.30pm, finishing around 11pm. For any queries about the event contact 087-1954707.

Ardfert NS Student Council helps Dan Murphy load the 200 Christmas shoeboxes donated by the children.

ARDFERT school children filled almost 200 shoeboxes with beautiful gifts for children in Africa and Eastern Europe as part of The Christmas Shoebox Appeal by Team Hope.

The shoeboxes will be distributed based on need alone and they bring joy and excitement to children living in very difficult situations.

For many children it will be the only Christmas gift they will receive.  Items in the box can include crayons, copies, colouring books etc. soap, hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste etc. socks, hat, scarf, gloves etc. a cuddly toy, skipping rope, sweets, ball, doll etc.

The children choose a selection from the above list and then label their boxes for a boy or a girl and the suitable age group.

The boxes were collected by Dan Murphy and will be transported to their destination by truck in time for Christmas. The Ardfert Students’ Council under the guidance of teacher, Áine Daly co-ordinated the appeal in the school.

They encouraged and motivated the children and they were amazed at the response.  Some children bought in more than one box and Aisling Dwyer in third class brought in an unbelievable 10 boxes! The Christmas spirit of sharing and caring is alive and well in Ardfert School.

Cllr Suggests Pathway Through Square Until Something Is Done About Surface

.

A TRALEE Municipal District councillor wants to see something done about the surface in the Square and has suggested an interim measure of a new walkway through it using different paving.

Cllr Norma Foley made the suggestion at the meeting of Tralee Municipal District councillors on Monday where she had a motion that the Council take action to improve/upgrade the surface in the Square/Abbeycourt and Denny Lane after ongoing issues regarding the surface grip.

Continued below…

.

This is the second time in four months the issue has come before the council, as at the July meeting, Cllr Toireasa Ferris had a similar request for the Council to take action.

In reply, the Council said that they had engaged the services of an independent and competent test facility to assess the slip resistance of the slab surfaces in Abbeycourt and the Square in February of this year.

Following their assessment, no areas of high slip potential were identified. They said ‘Deep Cleaning’ of the area can improve the micro-texture of the pavement and this is undertaken twice this year, most recently in September.

They are actively looking at alternative means of further improving the performance of this surface with a view to determining their suitability and performance.

Cllr Foley did not accept this reply and said that the surface in these areas is “highly dangerous” and “incredibly slippery”. She said the surface should never have been put down in the first place.

Cllr Foley said there have been numerous slippages and it’s an unacceptable situation. She said she had fallen there herself and has seen others fall.

She suggested that a temporary pathway be constructed using ordinary paving that would be safer for people travelling in the area.

Council Management said they would look at options regarding the surface and come back to Cllr Foley about the issue at the January meeting of the Tralee MD.
