IT Tralee, funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), will host a family showcase event at IT Tralee’s North Campus on Saturday, November 16, as part of National Science Week

This daylong event offers a vast array of fun, educational and interactive events for all age’s including VR experiences, scientific testing, robotics, weather forecasting, electric vehicle display, sustainable food making, zoology, book reading, children’s sustainable recycling workshop, slime experiments and much more. A full day of family fun is guaranteed!

Kerry College To Provide Free Culinary Arts Course In Dingle

TO address the skills gap and staff shortage in hospitality and tourism sectors in County Kerry, a new fully funded course in Dingle may be of interest.

Applications are open for the upcoming Certificate in Culinary Arts (Food Preparation and Cooking) run at Dingle Cookery School which starts on Monday, November 25.

This is a pathway course provided by Kerry College of Further Education and Training. It is targeted at those who wish to start a career in the culinary arts, food preparation or progression to the National Commis Chef Apprenticeship Programme.

Each learner will be based in an industry standard production kitchen at Dingle Cookery School and with have their own workstation.

The course is fully funded, so no fees are payable. It runs for 20 weeks full time and aims to develop a range of basic food prep, cooking and culinary arts skills.

Thirty Patients Waiting On Trolleys At UHK Today

THERE are 3o patients waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry today according to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

It’s been a busy week at the hospital as yesterday there were 23 patients on trolleys and 24 on Wednesday, 21 on Tuesday and five on Monday.

Tuesday was the worst day of the year so far for overcrowding nationally in hospitals with 679 patients waiting on trolleys.

Last month was the worst October since records began for numbers of patients waiting on trolleys at University Hospital Kerry.

Meanwhile, strict visitor restrictions remain in place at University Hospital Kerry due to the ongoing outbreak of the winter vomiting bug.

Anyone affected by vomiting and/or diarrhea, or in contact with anyone with these symptoms are asked to stay away from the hospital until symptom-free for 72 hours.

Anyone with any queries about visiting times or visiting a particular ward should ring the hospital in advance on 066 7184000.

Drugs Seized At House In Killeen Area Of Tralee

GARDAI have seized approximately €1,400 euro of suspected controlled drugs following a search at a house in the Killeen area of Tralee on Thursday November 7.

As part of an ongoing operation into the sale and supply of drugs, Gardaí from the Divisional Drugs Unit in Kerry carried out a search at a house in the Kileen area shortly after 10.30pm.

During the operation €1,400 of suspected controlled drugs were seized. The suspected drugs will now be sent for analysis. No arrests have been made but Gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry.

Man Arrested After Burglary In Tralee Last Month

GARDAI in Tralee have arrested and charged a man in his 40s in relation to a burglary at a shop on Abbeycourt, Tralee on the night October 9.

Shortly after 8am on October 10, Gardaí received a report of a burglary that had occurred overnight.

During the burglary a large number of power tools were taken from the premises. Gardai carried out a search of the area and recovered all of the stolen property which had been hidden in a nearby park.

Following an investigation by Gardaí in Tralee, a man in his 40s was arrested yesterday, November 7.

He was detained at Tralee Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 and has since been charged to appear before the courts at a later date.

Friday

1. Barbara’s book launch…

Local author Barbara Byar will launch her debut short fiction collection – ‘Some Days Are Better Than Ours’ at Madden’s Cafe in Tralee from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

Deirdre Walsh from Radio Kerry will be the launch MC and there will be wine, nibbles, readings and a chance to ask questions of the author. Barbara is an American immigrant who has lived for many years in Co. Kerry with her two sons and two dogs.

A former Novel Fair winner, her short fiction has been published widely and listed for various competitions, including the Bare Fiction Prize and the Over the Edge New Writer of the Year Award.

2. Fashion night in Ballyroe…

The annual ADAPT Kerry Charity Shop Fashion Show is on in Ballyroe Heights Hotel.

The clothes come from the shop in Matt Talbot Road and features top designer brands which will be available to buy on the night.

Radio Kerry’s Alan Finn is the MC on the night and there will be music from Noel Mac and Len Casey, with Manus Leen as the DJ on the night.

There’s great spot prizes and all fashions on display will be available to buy after the show. For tickets, call into the shop on Matt Talbot Road (next to Gleasure’s Funeral Home). Doors open 7pm, show starts at 7.30pm.

3. Rock out at the Meadowlands…

Meadowlands Hotel is the venue for the 6th annual Tralee Rock, Blues & Motorcycle Festival from Friday to Sunday.

Held in aid of Kerry S.P.C.A., the Festival kicks off on Friday at 8pm with In the Black followed by Mario. The headline for the evening is the Inglorious Bar-Stewards.

On Saturday afternoon there will be a ride out from the hotel followed by a bike show with trophies and prizes. That evening sees Pa Barry, Martin Cummins, Mudcat Blues Band and headline act Chapter 2 take the stage.  There will be a major raffle, party games and presentation of trophies and prizes throughout the evening.

Sunday will see a more relaxed pace with an early Blues session in Johnny Frank’s Bar to end the festival.

Saturday

4. Honouring the jubilee teams…

While the Austin Stacks county championship winning team of 1994 will be honoured at halftime during the Kerry SFC final on Sunday, the club is planning their own celebration on Saturday night at the clubhouse in Connolly Park.

Many Rockies have fond memories of the side that beat Dr Crokes that year and most of the players should be present for a night of nostalgia. Also, the Stacks 1969 minor team who won the county championship that year will be recognised, so it’s a double celebration not to be missed for Rockies. It all starts at 8.30pm.

Sunday

5. TV comes to Ballygarry…

Ireland AM is coming to Ballygarry House Hotel. Hosted by Anna Daly, Simon Delaney and Deric Ó h’Artagáin from the popular Virgin Media One show, it features your favourite Ireland AM personalities plus some special guests.

Dr Crokes will lock horns with East Kerry at 3pm to decide who will win the Kerry SFC title. On a local note, Austin Stacks will be hoping the divisional side prevail, in which case they would enter into the Munster Club Championship.
