PHOTOS: Tralee CBS Corn Uí Mhuirí Winners Of 1999/2000 Meet Again

THEY bridged a gap of 23 years when captain Garrett Walsh lifted the Corn Uí Mhuirí cup back in 1999.

Twenty years on, members of the CBS The Green team, coaching team and family members met up again at Kirby’s Brogue Inn on Sunday evening to recall that victory and their 2000 win when they retained the title.

The Green beat St Flannan’s in both finals and Declan Quill was one players who took to the field in both finals.

“We were the surprise package in 1999. St Fachtna’s of Skibbereen had a star-studded team and we played them in a semi-final in Macroom where a last minute penalty got us a draw,” explained the former Kerry star.

.

“The replay in Inchigeelagh was one of the greatest games I ever played in in my career and we won it with a last minute goal by Kevin Walsh. Then we beat St Flannan’s in Rathkeale in the final.”

“We had a great support from the school with three or four buses from CBS and even two from Presentation school. We had massive following from the clubs in town, Ballymac and St Pats too. It was a brilliant time to be involved in football at CBS. We didn’t win it for 23 years so it’s good to mark it again tonight.

It’s good to see such a turnout here, guys have come back from England and the US for it and shows the bond that was there between us at that time,” said Declan.

Garrett Walsh was captain of the 1999 team. “I don’t have great memories of the final, only the celebrations after. I remember holding the cup aloft on the dugout. Later that evening, Bill Kirby got us a Garda escort through the town and we ended up here in the Brogue with the teachers. I remember before the game there was great hype created by the Press and that fed into the school,” said Garrett.

.

Brother James Whelan, the Principal at the time, was also present and said it was a great period for the school. He said that the foundations were laid for those successes in the first year leagues and that led to numerous trophies.

The coaching team for both victories were Damien McLoughlin, Eamon Walsh and Liam Scully and the latter remembers how significant bridging the gap was.

“As coaches, we were very conscious of the gap and we hoped everything would work out, but we had a great bunch of players who trained hard. I played on a De La Salle Waterford side which won a Munster Colleges title and I knew the significance of that, so I told them at the time that they would appreciate winning a title for years to come,” said Liam.

Looks like he was right and the Class of 99/00 certainly had a lot to look back on at the Brogue. Scroll down for photos…

ROCK STREET POST OFFICE CLUB LOTTO COMPETITION

The Club is currently competing with other clubs for the sole rights to sell our Club Lotto tickets in Rock Street Post Office from April 2020.

To help us win this competition, all you have to do is mention your support for Kerins O’Rahillys when you make any financial transaction in Rock Street Post Office and you will collect points for the club.

The points are collected by stamping a card that you can keep yourself or else leave in the Post Office if that’s handier for you.

When the card is full, you can give it to Paula O’Sullivan of our Management Committee or else hand it into Rock Street Post Office – and then start a new card!  The number of points awarded depends on the type of transaction you make.

For example, if you open a new deposit account, you will earn five points for Kerins O’Rahillys and if you buy a booklet of 10 stamps, you will earn the club two points.

We are asking all club members and supporters to get behind us in our efforts to win the competition.  So if you’re buying stamps for Christmas, think Rock street Post Office and then think Kerins O’Rahillys when you’re in there!  All support welcome.

A.G.M. at 7.30 p.m.

The AGM of our club will take place on THIS Friday January 3rd in the clubrooms, at 7.30 p.m. Our club has had a very busy and successful year both on and off the pitch. From our under 6’s to our seniors-all age groups have had a varied and fun programme of activities and games. If you would like to be part of this very forward thinking and welcoming club, then you need to come along to our AGM and get involved. Personally speaking, you will get back far more than you give! We look forward to seeing you there.

Medal Presentation and Club Awards Night:

A very enjoyable night was had at our End of Year Awards Presentation Night in Larkins Bar on Saturday December 28thlast. Our secretary, Mike Carroll addressed the large gathering and reminisced on the year gone by. All good wishes were extended from those present to our senior player Thady O’ Sullivan.

Linus Óg Burke was one of our first presentations on the night –receiving his ‘Junior C Player of the Year Award’ from Henry Scanlon. Dwight Bacalso was then presented with the ‘Junior B Player of the Year Award’. Well done to you both.

Ciarán O’ Connor was a very popular winner of the under 23/ Young Player of the Year. Mike Carroll pointed out that despite his position in the back line, Ciarán is no stranger to making attacks up the field and popping over a score when the opportunity arises! James Daly presented Ciarán with the Shane Daly Memorial Shield, in memory of his late brother Shane. Well done Ciarán on your award and best of luck for the coming season.

We were very privileged to have young Conor Giles to present ‘The Johnny Giles Memorial Shield’ (in memory of his late dad) to our ‘Senior Player of the Year’ -Pa Wrenn. Mike Carroll commented on Pa’s commitment to the senior panel, always endeavouring to make training despite his busy and un- predictable work schedule as a paramedic. Pa was also commended for his ‘never give up’ attitude on the field of play and most importantly for being an excellent role model for the younger players coming up. Well done Pa on a richly deserved award and to Conor on doing a wonderful presentation.

Our final presentation of the night was for Club Person of the Year.  With so many in our club giving so much of their time, this is always a difficult one to decide. However, this year, there was notably one person who stood out amongst all the rest. The very worthy recipient was our Lotto Officer, Eileen Spring. Eileen’s work load as Lotto Officer has increased hugely over the past year and she has coped admirably with it. Not content with that, Eileen is also assistant treasurer at present and she is always eager to help out with underage training too. Our club chairman, Podge Leane presented Eileen with her award. Know Your Rights: The Legal Alcohol Limits For Driving

.
.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Question: What are the legal alcohol limits for driving?

Answer: It is an offence to drive in a public place if you are too intoxicated to have proper control of your vehicle. An intoxicant can be either alcohol or drugs, or both.

It is also an offence to drive in a public place if the level of alcohol in your blood, breath or urine is above the prescribed alcohol limit.

There are different alcohol limits for experienced drivers and new drivers. New drivers are drivers with learner permits or drivers who have held a driving licence for 2 years or less, or people without a valid licence or permit.

Continued below…

.

The legal limits for fully-licenced drivers are:

• 50 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood
• 67 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine
• 22 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath

The legal limits for professional, learner and novice drivers are:

• 20 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood
• 27 milligrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of urine
• 9 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath

Gardaí can set up a roadblock to conduct random alcohol and drug testing. It is unlawful to refuse to be breathalysed, and you can be fined up to €5000, or be imprisoned for up to 6 months, or both.

Penalties for drink driving vary depending on the amount of alcohol that has been detected in your system. The court will also take into account whether this is your first offence or otherwise.

All drink driving offences result in disqualification from driving for at least 3 months.

Finnegan On Films: ‘Cats’ Has A Purrfect Cast For Fantasy Fable

.

Our movie reviewer, James Finnegan says ‘Cats’ is a fantasy fable that makes for a memorable viewing experience…

SIGMUND Freud once said that “Time with Cats is never wasted”.

While he was not specifically refereeing to the new film, based on Andrew Lloyd Webber’s stage musical, which was in turn based on T.S.Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”, I think it can be applied to this production.

Many have been talking about the digital fur technology, and how in some scenes you can see Judi Dench’s hand instead of fur.

‘Cats’.

Well, if you are looking for the gritty realism of the streets, I would suggest that Musical Theatre is not perhaps the best place to find it, with perhaps the nearest being Director Tom Hooper’s previous contribution to this genre with “The Glums”, or as you probably know it better, “Les Miserables”.

Continued below…

.

If, however, you come into this film, and just go with the premise, it is a memorable viewing experience.

The plot, such as it is, has been amended slightly from the stage version to make it more cinematic.  Therefore, Victoria the White Cat, now acts as the central character who takes us through the story.

Played wonderfully by ballet dancer Francesca Hayward, she is abandoned by the only human we see, right at the start of the film, is adopted by the Jellicle group and allowed to witness the Jellicle Choice to be made by Old Deuteronomy.

Macavity, the baddie of the film, wants to be the Jellicle Choice as it is the opportunity to be born into a better life, so he spends the film magically getting rid of his competition for this honour.

The cast is simply purrfect. The aforementioned Judi Dench plays Old Deuteronomy, in a gender flip from the stage, in what could be described as her now traditional regal manner.

It is also fitting as Dench was to appear in the stage version as Grizabella until injury saw her replaced by Elaine Paige.

In this version, it is Jennifer Hudson who plays this role and therefore gets to sing the main song “Memories”, and she makes a fine job of it.  Idris Elba releases his inner pantomime villain as Macavity, aided and abated by Taylor Swift (Bombalurina) and Ray Winstone (Growltiger).

Other cast members are James Corden (Bustopher Jones), Rebel Wilson (Jennyanydots), Ian McKellen (Gus the Theatre Cat) and Laurie Davidson, as the top hatted magician cat, Mr Mistoffelees, all of whom bring their feline personalities through in a thoroughly charming manner.

There is just one scene involving cockroaches that smallies might have a problem with, but it is very brief and probably the adults will make more about it than it deserves.

Set in a whimsical, ethereal, fantastical 1920’s London, a stylised Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus, Russell Square and the various side streets and alleyways are used as backdrops for the adventures.

This is a simply a film, with great music and dance, that is a fantasy fable about Cats, just like the title says.  Enjoy!
