UHK Had Worst September For Overcrowding Since Records Began Says INMO

.

FIVE hospitals in Ireland, including University Hospital Kerry, have had their worst-ever September for overcrowding this month, new figures from the INMO show.

Cork University Hospital, Mercy University Hospital (Cork), University Hospital Kerry, Letterkenny University Hospital, and Portiuncula Hospital have all seen more patients on trolleys this September than any other year.

There were 422 people waiting on trolleys in UHK during September, up from 268 in the same month last year, 283 in 2019, 282 in 2018 and 114 in 2017.

.

Overcrowding figures reached record lows nationally in 2019 and 2020 due to the pandemic response, but the INMO is warning that many hospitals are “rapidly returning to the bad old days of overcrowding”.

Overall, it is the second-worst-ever September for overcrowding in Ireland, with 8,414 on trolleys in September 2021. The worst-ever September was in 2019, with 10,641 on trolleys.

Deputy Daly Wants Clarification On Assessment Of Tralee Courthouse

.

KERRY’S Sinn Féin TD has called on the Courts Service to clarify if they have carried out an assessment of Tralee Courthouse by a Conservation Architect.

Speaking after the Justice committee on Tuesday of this week, Pa Daly TD, spokesperson for Law Reform, welcomed the contribution from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.

“When the committee was preparing our work programme for this term, I had asked that the topic of courts and courthouses be included, and following a discussion with Malcolm Noonan, Minister of State, requested a representative from his Department be invited,” said Deputy Daly.

Continued below…

.

“Nicola Matthews from that Department was very clear in her written submission and her contribution: No courthouse should be abandoned without an assessment of the building by a Conservation Architect Grade 1.

“Ms Matthews also made clear that courthouses such as Tralee are part of our built heritage legacy and provide an important social record. The impacts of climate change also necessitate a policy of the refurbishment of buildings over new builds.

“However, the Courts Service were unable to confirm if such an assessment has been carried out with respect to Tralee during a 2019/2020 review of all court venues.

“Where court services are being moved, in whole or in part, from an existing Courthouse, and where an expensive new building is being considered by the Department, this could be a wasteful oversight. It would also contradict the Government’s emphasis on strengthening town centres in the ‘Town Centre First’ Programme for Government.

“I am calling on the Courts Service to clarify whether they have carried out this assessment and to partner with the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to pursue the refurbishment of the existing courthouse. This should be done before any decision is taken to remove court services from Ashe Street, which in my view would be detrimental to Tralee Town and the surrounding area.”

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Dingle 2-10; Austin Stacks 2-12.

When these sides met in the opening game of the season just 15 weeks ago (the first round of the Co. League) the result was a low-scoring draw (0-9 to 1-6) in Connolly Park. Dingle went on a few weeks later to win the League outright, their second in the 50 year history of the competition.

On last Sunday afternoon (26th Sept) in Páirc an Aghasaigh eight minutes into the second half it looked as if they would continue with that winning streak. At that stage they had a lead of eight points (2-9 to 1-4).

But for the remainder of the game we held them to just one more point, and that from a free, while we put on a towering display adding a further goal and eight points to come away with a two points win.

The sides were level on two points each after the opening seven minutes – both of ours coming from play by Michael O’Donnell and Ronan Shanahan. But Dingle took complete control for the remainder of the half, adding 1-6 to their tally while holding us to just two more points – a second Michael O’Donnell point from play and a pointed free by Seán Quilter after a foul on Shane O’Callaghan. The home side led by 1-8 to 0-4 at half time.

Both sides had a goal each in the opening minutes of the second half – ours coming from a well-taken Sean Quilter penalty after a foul on Joseph O’Connor.  And then came that towering display which we referred to earlier.

Our goal was the first to come in the 39thminute by Shane O’Callaghan with our eight points coming from five different players – three more from Sean Quilter (one from a free), two more from play by Michael O’Donnell and one each by Joseph O’Connor, Shane O’Callaghan and a Darragh O’Brien free.

It was good to see Barry Shanahan back in action again – making a first start since the Crokes game in early July but not so good to see his brother Ronan pick up an injury just four minutes into the second after having a whale of a game up to then. Greg Horan also picked up a slight injury during that second half and we wish both Ronan and Greg a speedy recovery,

Team: Wayne Guthrie, Barry Walsh, Barry Shanahan, Jack O’Shea, Dylan Casey (Capt), Conor Jordan, Ronan Shanahan (0-1), Joseph O’Connor (0-1), Michael O’Gara, Greg Horan, Shane O’Callaghan (1-1), Fiachna Mangan, Seán Quilter (1-4 – penalty goal, two frees), Michael O’Donnell (0-4), Brendan O’Sullivan.

Subs used: Adam Curran (34m), Darragh O’Brien (43m) (0-1 free), Armin Heinrich (46m), Colin Griffin (56m).

With both sides having already qualified for the semi finals the win means a home game for us in our semi final and with all four teams in Group 2 on equal points our opponents could be any of those four teams (Crokes, Kenmare, Templenoe, Spa). Those two round 3 games in Group 2 will be played on next Sunday (3rd Oct) at 2.30pm – Dr. Crokes .v. Kenmare Sham at Lewis Rd. and Spa .v. Templenoe at Spa (Killarney).

In the meantime we have drawn the current champions, East Kerry in the opening game of this season’s Co. Championship due to take placeo n the 30th/31st October.

MINOR FOOTBALL: Dr. Crokes 2-4 (10); Austin Stacks 8-11 (35).

What a turn-around in one week. Last Saturday week we suffered a heavy defeat in the opening round of the Co. Championship. On last Saturday our boys proved that last week was a once off as many in the Club knew it was and put on a stunning performance in Lewis Road to keep our chances of progressing in this year’s competition very much alive with a 25 points winning margin against the home side.

We meant business from the very start with Damien Hogan pointing a free inside the first minute after Caden O’Mahony was fouled with goal written all over it. A minute later Paddy Lane scored our first from play and all our remaining scores thereafter, bar one more point, came from play. In the 3rd minute the home side went ahead with a goal but this was the one time they had a lead in the game.

For the remainder of the half they added just three more points while we added 3 goals and seven points. Two of those goals came from Caden O’Mahony with the third coming from Damien Hogan and Caden also scored three of those seven points with the other four coming from Damien (2), Paddy Lane and Cillian Litchfield. This left us ahead by 3-9 to 1-3 at half time.

We improved our goal-fest in the second half, adding  five more, with second half substitute Josh Lynch scoring two and the other three coming from Damien Hogan, Caden O’Mahony and Paddy Lane. Our two points came at the start and end of the half – Cillian Litchfield and Josh Lynch on target,

But this was a real team performance with all 20 playing superbly throughout the hour as we always knew they could.

Team: Michael Tansley, Jack Doyle, Cian Dillane, Donnacha Horgan, Daniel Kirby, Colm Browne, Luke Casey, Cillian Litchfield (0-2), Enda Cahill (Capt), Caden O’Mahony (3-3), Paddy Lane (1-2), Jack Hannon, Sean Moynihan, Damien Hogan (2-3 –two frees), Darragh Moriarty.

Subs used: Josh Lynch (37m) (2-1), Pádraig O’Halloran (38m), Mark Carmody (45m), Jamie Horgan (50m), Thomas Derege (52m).

We now play West Kerry at a neutral venue (not yet confirmed as we write) on next Saturday evening (3nd Oct) in the third and final round of the Group stage and a win is a must here to give us a chance to go through to the quarter final knock-out stage.

SEPTEMBER IN THE PAST (22/09 to 30/09). On the field of play the C Team won its first Barrett Cup Final defeating Scartaglin in a low-scoring replay (0-8 to 0-6) in Castleisland– all our eight scores coming from play. Team/Panel: John Browne, Pat Dowling, Noel Power, Eddie Dowling, Johnny Conway (Capt), Johnny Barrett, Frankie Smyth, Timmy Sheehan (0-1), Caoilte O’Connor, Aidan Mangan (0-1), Colm McLoughlin, Tommy Ryan (0-1), Frankie Ryan (0-2), Tony O’Keeffe (0-2), John O’Brien (0-1). Subs: Michael Godley, Denis Bracker O’Regan. Rest of Panel: Frank Hogan, John Galvin, Maurice McNamara, Gerard Hill, Charlie McMahon, Eamon O’Brien, Terry McSweeney, David O’Lehan, Paul Lucey.

Many individual happenings took place on the field of play during the last days of September in the past – this random selection in year order. In 1963 Henry McKinney won his 2nd All Irl MF medal; in 1969 John O’Keeffe won his first All Irl SF medal; in 1975 there were four Rock men on Kerry’s All Ireland SF winning team – the first since 1932 – the afore-mentioned Johnno, Ger Power, Ger O’Keeffe and Mikey Sheehy. And three years later (1978) Mikey hit the headlines again with that famous ‘Paddy Cullen’ goal to put Kerry on the way to that All Ireland win over Dublin (5-11 to 0-9).

Billy Ryle: Minister Needs To Intervene To Help Kerry Students

.

Guidance Counsellor Billy Ryle says Minister Simon Harris must intervene immediately or many of Kerry’s talented young people will be denied their right to a third level education…

Very few college students set foot on campus during the last academic year.

Instead, they spent the year at home as lectures were delivered on-line. The sheer joy of returning to in-person lectures has been tempered by a difficult search for accommodation, which is in very short supply and very expensive.

The cost-of-living guide published recently by Technological University Dublin (TUD), reaffirms that 3rd level costs are prohibitive for many students.

Continued below…

.

The guide confirms that the cost of maintaining a student in college this year will be a staggering €14,000. In addition, means testing of grant applications is so restrictive that thousands of students are ineligible for any financial aid.

Capping the gross annual income levels for grant eligibility at €39,875 ignores spiralling living costs – increasing again this year by 13.5% – and is financially crippling many families.

A significant number of higher education students get no funding from the grant authority, SUSI due to punitive means testing of household income.

The maximum standard maintenance grant is only €3025. That amount might suffice for an academic year if the student is driving into UCD or TCD from Greystones or Dun Laoghaire, while enjoying full board free gratis at home.

However, Kerry’s high achieving students face a far different reality. Students from Kerry need an average of €14,000 annually to attend college away from home.

Continued below…

.

The average monthly cost of accommodation in Dublin has exceeded €1,400, with costs almost doubling during the past five years.

There are many courses in Dublin, Maynooth and Galway that Kerry students would love to apply for.

Unfortunately, unless they come from wealthy backgrounds or have family accommodation in the city, rural students are restricted to courses nearer home.

Nine in ten parents are helping to fund their children’s education but are getting into considerable debt to do so. 60% of third level students are forced to live at home during term time.

Many are forced to make a daily return commute from Kerry to Limerick or Cork because they can’t afford the spiralling unregulated cost of student accommodation. Others are sleeping on a couch in the digs of college friends.

The majority of students are working at least fifteen hours per week while trying to keep up-to-speed with their studies.

The supply of rental accommodation is at a critically low level and students are competing for the most basic accommodation with those who cannot afford to purchase a home or are awaiting social housing.

Students, who normally live away from home during the academic year now face the prospect of missing out on college if they can’t, firstly, find accommodation and secondly, if they don’t have the means to pay for it.

The alternative is a long daily commute to and from college which is costly in terms of time, fatigue and finance.

In fact, application data reveals that the vast majority of college applicants from Kerry look no further than Tralee, Cork and Limerick as they now accept that accommodation in the Dublin and Galway regions is unaffordable.

Minister Harris should take note of Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s response to the British establishment which complained about spending on education in Scotland – ‘Education in Scotland is based on the ability to learn not on the ability to pay!’

If Minister Harris is serious about easing the financial burden on hard pressed families, he must immediately abolish the €3000 student fee contribution.

He must increase the standard maintenance grant from €3025 to €5000 and all other grants pro rata. He must increase the annual income level for standard grant eligibility to €50,000 from the current €39,875.

Otherwise, rural students can only dream about what might have been in careers denied them by Government procrastination!

CHECKLIST

• It will cost €14,000 to maintain a student in college this year (TUD Survey)
• The value of the non-adjacent grant is €3,025 and the adjacent grant is €1215
• The student contribution is a staggering €3000
• The standard maintenance grant must be increased from €3025 to €5000
• Income level for standard grant eligibility must be increased from €39,875 to €50,000
• Most Kerry students can’t afford to apply for courses in Dublin, Maynooth or Galway
• Many Kerry students are forced to make a daily return commute to Limerick or Cork
• Many students without accommodation are sleeping on a couch in a friend’s digs
• Many students are working 15hrs or more per week to make ends meet
• Money issues are the biggest concern for parents of college students
• Six in ten parents are forced into debt to fund their children’s third level education

.
Féilte 2021 event was launched by Minister for Education Norma Foley, TD, together with the Teaching Council’s Chair, Seán McMahon (left) and Director, Tomás Ó Ruairc. Photo: Chris Bellew / Fennell Photography

FÉILTE, the largest educational event in Ireland, is taking place online again this year on this Saturday, October 2 from 10am to 4pm and Kerry teachers and the general public are encouraged to attend virtually.

Author and former teacher Roddy Doyle has been announced as keynote speaker. Tickets are free and now on general release and available at: https://hopin.com/events/feilte-2021.

After the record-breaking success of last year, FÉILTE (the Festival of Education in Learning and Teaching Excellence) will welcome over 3,000 teachers and members of the public for the largest educational event in Ireland.

Continued below…

.

Hosted by the Teaching Council of Ireland, and now in its ninth year, FÉILTE provides a unique platform for teachers to share innovative teaching techniques and network with each other and the public.

FÉILTE 2021 will take place online to ensure ongoing health and safety for all and will build on the success of FÉILTE 2020 which pivoted online at the height of the pandemic.

Details of the event were launched today by Minister for Education Norma Foley, TD, together with the Teaching Council’s Chair, Seán McMahon, and Director, Tomás Ó Ruairc.

Speaking ahead of the event, Minister Foley said: “FÉILTE is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the teaching profession, and this year gives a particular opportunity to reflect on and acknowledge the enormous contribution of teachers during a time of unprecedented challenge.

“Every time I visit a school, I am impressed and encouraged by the energy, commitment and enthusiasm of our teachers. Since I have been able to see more and more of our schools in operation in recent times, I am bowled over by the many ways teachers and schools communities have risen to the challenge of supporting our children and young people during the unprecedented times we have all just experienced.

“With the successful reopening of our schools, and as society moves now to a new phase, it is hugely important to acknowledge the effort and contribution of our teachers, and their role in ensuring that normality is brought back to the lives of children and young people in our school communities.

“I am enormously proud of how the education sector has overcome these challenging times, and I look forward to celebrating this achievement at this year’s FÉILTE.”=

Roddy Doyle, author and keynote speaker, said: “For a long time now, I’ve felt that becoming a teacher was the best decision I ever made. It’s twenty-eight years since I stopped teaching but those years in the classroom are still with me, always – in my writing, my priorities, in almost every aspect of my life.  This is why I’m really looking forward to FÉILTE. I congratulate the Teaching Council on FÉILTE 2021 and I’m delighted to have been asked to deliver the keynote interview at the event.”

Legion opened the scoring with a close in free , but minutes before this O’Rahillys net minder Shane Foley pulled off an outstanding save , when the visitors looked certain to tap a fisted pass across the square to the net, Foley raced across his line and denied them a goal.
Tommy Walsh soon equalised for the blues , this was quickly followed by a point from the lively Barry John Keane.
Legion then levelled with a point from the dangerous looking Conor Keane.
Our forward unit was now operating with much better fluency than we have seen in previous weeks , Tommy Walsh was causing huge problems for the Killarney team on the edge of the square, Barry John Keane , Jack Savage and Gavin O Brien were also involved in a lot of play and between them created a great goal chance, but for Jack Savage to be denied by Brian Kelly in the Legion goal.
The game was neck and neck and just before the first half water break Tommy Walsh took a fine mark from a high ball into the edge of the square, Tommy tapped over from close range to leave the score three points each .
From the restart Jack Savage kicked a fine point following a good fetch by Gavin O Brien. Legion again levelled , and this proved to be their last score of the half as the men in blue started to dominate around the middle, with the returning David Moran and Con Barrett putting in a great shift.
This dominance was rewarded with a point from Jack Savage , which was followed up by a great goal from Cormac Coffey who combined well with Gavin O’Brien to finish to the net. Minutes after ,O’Brien fired over a point of his own to put us into a 1-7 to -04 lead heading into the half time break.
Legion were to get the first score of the second half .

We were again dominating possession, but we were very sloppy in front of goal, squandering good opportunities to extend our lead, with some wayward shooting , shots dropping short into goalkeepers hand and poor decision making.
Ten minutes in , we were awarded a penalty when Gearoid Savage was upended in the square.

The resulting penalty was was expertly dispatched by Jack Savage.
From the kick out Legion swept up the field and floated a dangerous ball into the square, the ball broke and was struck goal bound but for Shane Foley to pull off another outstanding stop from point blank range.
Barry John Keane added to his tally just before the second half water break with a well taken point, this left the score 2-08 to 0-07.

Legion then kicked their final score of the afternoon.
The game became a little frayed in the final stages with both teams visibly tiring in the trying conditions.
Substitute Shane McElligott kicked a point before Jack Savage knocked over our final score of the game to see us run out comfortable winner on a score line of 2-10 to 0-08.
The big home support were delighted with the huge commitment, work rate and effort from the home side. The return of David Moran at midfield and the permanent deployment of Tommy Walsh at full forward is a huge plus for the side. Shane Foley in goal continues to impress, as does Donagh Buckley and Cormac Coffey at the back.

Con Barrett was back to his best, and put in a huge amount of work throughout.
Up front Gavin O Brien had his best outing in a while, Jack Savage was a constant threat, with the most notable display being the return to form of Barry John Keane.
We have a four or five week break now till our next fixture, which will be the first round of the County Championship. This will give management an opportunity to up the fitness levels and get some injuries to keys players cleared up.
Team:S Foley,D Buckley,P Begley,D McElligott,S Brosnan,C Coffey(goal)C Sayers,C Barrett,D Moran,G Savage,J Savage(1 -3,pen/1f),G O’Brien(1) BJ Keane (3)T Walsh (2,1M), C Hayes.

NÓTAÍ NA mBAN
A few games seem to be dragging on so hopefully we will get them played over the next couple of weeks especially now that basketball has started again.

We are asking for plenty of support for our U17 Ladies who are in the Championship semi final v Na Gaeil this Wednesday. Throw in will be at 6p.m.

U12 GIRLS
STRAND ROAD BLUES TEAM

Strand Road Blues who played John Mitchels last Sunday… a super bunch of young ladies!

Driving into Ballyrickard  last Sunday  for Rd. 2 of the Town League  the dark grey clouds overhead heralded the warning of more rain. Thankfully it held off! Our second super U12 team , Strand Road Blues were taking on John Mitchels….

The intensity had started ever before the game began as the girls were doing their warm up drills while they awaited the arrival of the referee.

Our captain on the day was Erika Slattery, a young lady who lead her team well.  Our young ladies had a battle on their hands from the off as in previous games, John Mitchels had always beaten us well.

Molly Casey had fantastic kick outs and saves. Lily Mae Bowler brought her basketball skills into play with some wonderful catches. Talented Taylor Kate Leane had a great game as had Lily Hussey.

.

We , the spectators held our breaths a few times as we “nearly “ got a goal. Our sidelines  imparted a great deal of encouragement to our young girls throughout the game . What we lacked in physicality we made up for in spades with determination.

Ava O’ Shea, Emma Onyekwere , Allie Kerins and Aisling Donnelly covered every blade of grass on the pitch. While Mitchels continued the attack we  stood strong and kept working like Trojans up until the final whistle.

Sunday was not our day but each and every girl on the team should be proud of the effort you all put in on the pitch. Again the great work put in by your coaches Mary and Rachel has brought you up to the standard that you had last Sunday.

Well done to our U10s also who are getting plenty of game time in competitive games….an extremely skilful bunch thanks to your U10 coaches.
You are all improving with every game.
Final Score:
Strand Road Blues 3-03
John Mitchels         4-05
In our final Rd. of the Town League competition we are away to Austin Stacks this Wednesday.

KERINS O’ RAHILLY TEAM
This Thursday, September 30th we are away to Austin Stacks in Rd. 3 of the Town League. Throw in will be at 6p.m. in Ballyrickard.
Best of luck to everyone!

U13 CHAMPIONSHIP
Hard luck to our U13 Girls losing to Stacks in the Championship semi final in Connolly Park.
The girls did their best and kept fighting to the end. Huge well done girls for never giving up. We are getting stronger year by year and were delighted to see your sportsmanship after the final whistle. We are so proud of you! You’re a credit to your parents and club.
Many thanks to your parents for their support always and to your wonderful coach Mike Halloran for his time and commitment with the girls. It is greatly appreciated by all.

U14 GIRLS
Sending hugs and best wishes to two of our young ladies who had surgery during the week… Fiadh McCarthy , who has a warm smile that would light up a room and a hearty laugh and Wiktoria Szlaga who also has a beautiful smile and a calming presence about her. Get well soon girls and we’re looking forward to seeing you back when you’re well!
We were all set to head out to Annascaul for Rd. 4 of the Co. League…Dingle/ Annascaul v Kerins O’ Rahilly, some were even on the way out when we got word that one of our girls couldn’t make it. With numbers being tight already with surgeries etc. we had to cancel at short notice. Our apologies to everyone!
In our next round we are at home to Duagh.

U16 GIRLS
Details of our next North Kerry game TBC.

U17 CHAMPIONSHIP
Well done to our ladies on their 3 point win over Laune Rangers in Cloon pitch last Wednesdsy evening. It was one exciting game!
With injuries and illnesses we only started out with 13 players having already called on a few of our girls who are only still  14 to play. After a few minutes we were able to bring on 2 of our U16s who much to our delight had boots in the car to give us a full team. Laune Rangers were 7 points up before we got our first goal which then changed the game.
At half time we were up a point. Come the second water break both sides were even and tension was building… Laune Rangers missed a late penalty , this would have meant a draw and extra time if they had scored…
Well done to everyone who came out on top in a well contested game against Laune Rangers. Many thanks to all who travelled to support.
A great game by Katie Nix, Lily O ‘ Brien Lauren Nolan , Lia Mclysaght and Keelan Coffey.
Full Time Score:
Laune Rangers 2-16
Kerins O’ Rahilly 5-10
We now meet Na Gaeil in the semifinal this Wednesday. Throw in will be at 6p.m. in Ballyrickard pitch. Best of luck to all.

JUNIOR C CHAMPIONSHIP
Well done to our Senior Ladies beating Beale in Rd. 3 of the Championship. Good match and some great football. Next game  hopefully  next Sunday in Glenflesk. Best wishes to all!

Juvenile Notes

Kerins O’ Rahillys U11s …. “Up Strand Road.”

Definitely a good call cancelling training for our U5s and U6s last Sunday. It wasn’t too bad at 10a.m. but when the rain came it was bucketing down!
Make  sure that you keep up to date with our latest  club news on our Kerins O’ Rahilly GAA Club Facebook page.
Always remember that success  is about making our girls and boys the best they can be, whatever that may be…It’s less about the winning. Winning is nice, but it has to be about more than that….participation, inclusion, fun and enjoyment, making friends and much much more.

CONGRATS
Congratulations to our juvenile coach and former club player Declan Quill , his wife Erika and sons Adam and Mattie who welcomed baby Tommy into the world last Friday evening. If Tommy is going to be anything like his proud brothers, we have another class player on our hands and are only delighted….Great news !

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION
Congrats to the girls and boys who received their First Holy Communion last week… must say the boys in Strand Road were very dapper in their suits and of course our young ladies looked beautiful. Hope you all had a wonderful day!

U5 BOYS
Looking forward to seeing everyone next Sunday for enjoyable training with the best coaches around!

U6 GIRLS
See everyone next Sunday when we must remember to sing a belated ‘Happy Birthday’ to coach Aisling. You can even help her blow out the candles girls.

U7 BOYS

It was a fantastic training session as always for  the U7 Boys last Sunday. Our excellent coaches spent plenty of time coaching one  on one and having great Craic.  Brilliant ideas to make training even more enjoyable each week as the boys get tips from past players and management . It’s great that we have such a strong link between our ex adult players and underage section.
Huge well done to the boys  who played our neighbours from Rock Street, Austin Stacks in fun Go Games last Wednesday  in Ballyrickard .. Great match boys…
Thanks to our superb coaches who give the boys great encouragement always !
Thank also to Axel’s Dad photographer, Raivis Rodenbikers for the wonderful action shots !

Kerins O’ Rahilly’s U7s in action against Austin Stacks.

U8 GIRLS
The weather didn’t stop this super group of girls from traveling to Churchill where we had two teams line out. Each team showed great skills and commitment as they played in what turned into a very wet morning. But it didn’t damping their spirits and they all played extremely well. The coaches were very proud of each and every girl that turned up to play. Well done to each and everyone of ye. Thank you to Churchill for hosting us last Sunday. Ye also have a fantastic group of girls and we look forward to playing Ye again in the future. We must also thank our coaches who took the weather as it came and especially to Holy and Keelin who have been helping out with the girls, we couldn’t ask for more commitment than turning up on a day like Sunday. Thank you to each and every one of our parents too. This week the coaches had yet another tough job choosing player of the week, but this week they choose Kayla and Alice both girls have showed great improvement in all areas. Well done girls. We look forward to seeing all our U8s next week for training.

U10 GIRLS
We look forward to seeing all our U10 girls at training next Sunday. The coaches have some new drills and surprises planned for the girls.

U9 BOYS
At the weekend, our U9s were welcomed by Legion, Killarney for Go Games. It was a horrendous day on Sunday for football with a continuous,  extremely heavy downpour .In spite of the inclement weather , both Legion’s and Strand Road boys showed great skills on the Killarney pitches. Neither team disappointed us with their wonderful skills . Congrats to all of our young men who couldn’t attend due to the rather important event in their lives, namely their First Holy Communion. It’s great that you had a beautiful day for it.
We have to say thanks to our coaches who did grin and bear the weather also but a special mention to young Dylan Moriarty and T.J. Heaphy. We must remember that they are both young fellas and we appreciate so much you getting up earlier on a Sunday morning to help out especially in that rain.
A warm thanks to Legion for their hospitality and for hosting. Thanks for your generosity in providing treats for our youngsters. We are looking forward to returning the compliment soon. Our juvenile chairman’s Dad , John Doody played with Legion many moons ago before moving to Tralee.

Na Gaeil’s Darragh Carmody in action against An Ghaeltacht in the Intermediate Championship in Killeen on Sunday.

Seniors    Na Gaeil welcomed An Ghaeltacht to Killeen on Sunday for their final group game of the Intermediate Championship knowing that victory would guarantee them a home quarter final draw.

The heavy rain during the morning made the underfoot conditions very slippery, but it did peter out early in the game and the wind died down completely. Diarmuid O’Connor won the throw in and careered down the middle of An Ghaeltacht rearguard to fire over the crossbar after 12 seconds of play.

Minutes later the same player pointed a 30 metre for a foul on Jamie Lowham.  Eanna O‘Conchúir restored parity for An Ghaeltacht with two good points in the sixth and tenth minute.

Na Gaeil full forward Jamie Lowham, who had the better of his opposite number all day slotted over a point in the 16th minute to leave the home side one point ahead at the first water break, on a score line of Na Gaeil: 0-03; An Ghaeltacht: 0-02.

It was all Na Gaeil in the second quarter. Both sets of backs were playing very defensively so scores were hard to come by. Jack Barry was fouled going through in the 25th minute and scored the resultant free himself from an acute angle 30 metres out on the right wing.

Goalkeeper Devon Burns pointed a 45 metre free four minutes later and Diarmuid O’Connor slotted over his second point on the stroke of half time to leave the Killeen side ahead by 4. Na Gaeil: 06; An Ghaeltacht: 0-02.

Na Gaeil had a good start to the 2nd half with Diarmuid O’Connor again rising highest to win the throw in and surging forward. The ball made its way to Jamie Lowham who booted it over the crossbar after 26 seconds of play. Midfielder Jack Barry followed up with another good effort, this time with his right foot to push the gap out to six points.

But An Ghaeltacht responded with points from Pádraig Óigí O’Sé, Colm O’Muircheartaigh and Tomás O’Sé to narrow the gap to three points and make it a one score game. Diarmuid O’Connor replied with a point after good approach work by James O’Connor who was another Na Gaeil player that impressed on the day.

This score left Na Gaeil ahead once again by four points at the second water break on a score line of 0-09 to 0-05. Eanna O Conchúir who was An Ghaeltacht’s best player over the hour pointed two long range frees from the ground to narrow the gap to two once again.

With three minutes of normal time left Andrew Barry and Darragh Carmody registered points for the home side before Pádraig Óg O’Sé pulled one back for the West Kerry outfit.  Darragh Carmody had the last say with a lovely point from 30 metres out to give Na Gaeil a four point winning margin at full time. Final Score: Na Gaeil 0-12; An Ghaeltacht: 0-08.

This win ensures a home quarter final tie for Na Gaeil which will probably take place in a fortnight’s time. It was a very controlled performance by the Killeen side with their defence on top over the hour.

James O’Connor put in a great shift around the half back line. Diarmuid and Jack controlled midfield and up front Jamie Lowham and Jack Bourke caused a lot of problems for An Ghaeltacht’s full back line. Team: Devon Burns(0-01), Eoin Doody, Niall O’Mahony, Damien Bourke, James O’Connor Enda O’Connor, Fergal Barry, Jack Barry(0-02), Diarmuid O’Connor(0-04), Andrew Barry(0-01), Dan Goggin, Kieran O’Donovan, Tomás O’hAiniféin, Jamie Lowham(0-02), Jack Bourke. Subs: Kieran Dineen for James O’Connor; Jack Sheehan for Tomás O’hAiniféin; Darragh Carmody(0-02) for Jack Bourke; Eoin Walsh for Jamie Lowham.

U11    Our U11 Boys headed to Abbeyfeale on Sunday evening to take on the home side Fr. Casey’s. With over 30 players they fielded three teams against a strong Abbeyfeale outfit. We extend our thanks to Fr. Casey’s for hosting us.

Sympathy    We extend our sincere sympathy to the Crowley family Racecourse Lawn on the very sad passing of Michael in early August. Michael played under age football with Na Gaeil. May he rest in peace. We also offer our sincere sympathy to the Sheahan family on the sad passing of Dónal Sheahan, Killarney. Dónal was a great supporter for many years of our weekly lotto draw and our annual Race Night which we greatly appreciated. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.

The occasion was their delayed Confirmation Day which was held in two sittings to accommodate each class.

The weather wasn’t great, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the students and their families who enjoyed the day out. Scroll down for photos…

UNDER 7 BOYS & GIRLS
Our brave under 7 boys and girls braved atrocious wet weather on Sunday and lined up ready for training. We had some great fun while facing terrible rain but everyone had a ball.
Training will continue again this Sunday at 11 and we look forward to welcoming new faces
Do not forget to fill out the return to play form before each session.

U8/U10 GIRLS
Finally, our luck ran out in relation to the weather at a damp, wet Ballyseedy on Sunday morning for u8 and 10 girls training. It didn’t impact on the mood though as there was plenty of activity among the girls who brushed off the wet conditions to take part in an energetic session.
After challenge games the previous few weeks, the coaches were anxious to work on a few key areas that had been identified as needing work.

So, there was an emphasis on communicating, direct crisp passing and shooting.  After a few quick drills to emphasise this, the girls went straight into a game on a small-sided pitch to work on the link-up play. And after a few stoppages for coaches to highlight what was positive and what was not, the play flowed with everyone getting stuck in and working hard.
The players really worked on their game and the coaches were hugely impressed with the effort. In particular Caoimhe and Karolina were marking each other and gave no quarter. Also impressing was Siún, Teagan, Aine, Roisin, Ava, Lucy and Aeibhin.
Training continues next Sunday in Ballyseedy at 10.15. Again, all are welcome.
Do not forget to fill out the return to play form before each session.

UNDER 12 GIRLS

John Mitchel’s U12s made the short trip to Ballyrickard on Sunday afternoon to take on Kerins O’Rahillys in the Tralee Town League and came away with a six-point victory 3-9 to 3-3.
Weather conditions made ball control slippery, and in a very tight first half, there were only 3 points between the sides at the break. At midfield Laoise and Kelly were working hard, while at centre-back Zoe was in good form, with Alannah and Gia in terrific form in the two corner back positions, Hannah and Dionne also working hard in the half-back line.
There were some excellent scores in the first half, with Nadia goaling and at the break it was still a very tight contest, with Maddison, Claudia

The second half saw James and Denis make changes both in personnel and positional, and these paid off, particularly with Chloe playing at full-forward, and winning plenty of ball, either laying it off for scores or taking her own chances. The direct ball into the full-forward line gave Kerins O’Rahillys no end of bother, and led to 2 further goals, Chloe grabbing one of them.

Despite this, Kerins O’Rahillys struck back for 2 quick goals bringing lead down to two points, but the defence, with Grace in fine form in goals, steadied the ship and Mitchel’s gained further control of the game further out the field. Isabel, Kerri, Ella, Anne Marie, and Robyn ensured Mitchel’s controlled possession around midfield and in attack, and with Amy, Lily, and Grace making themselves available for passes and setting up scores in the last quarter, Mitchel’s gave an exhibition of point scoring in the closing stages of the game, to stretch the lead out to six points at the final whistle.

A fantastic performance from all the squad in difficult conditions, and the team-work and companionship among the players is fantastic to witness.
They will face St. Pats this week to determine the final placings. Well, done to the girls.

SENIOR MEN
Our Senior men faced Killcummin on Sunday last at home in horrendous conditions. First 15mins were tricky with both sides slipping and losing possession with the downfall of heavy rain. The first 15 mins leading to the first water break had very low scoring on both sides with the score line of 0-01 John Mitchel’s 0-02 Kilcummin. There were some great scores on both sides coming up to half time with Kilcummin knocking in a goal to make the score line 1-07 to 0-05 to the visitors. The rain eased a little but the battle on the field kept going with Mitchel’s now trailing 1-12 to 0-07. 15 mins to go and Mitchel’s were creeping back in but it was too late in the game to even come level with the final score line John Mitchel’s 0-11 Kilcummin 1-17. Hard Luck Boys!!   Next outing is away to Dromid October 3s throw in at 2.30pm. Please show your support

This Week in the Coiste na nÓg:

Our U11 sides started the week off hosting fellow Mid Kerry sides Cromane and Beaufort on the same evening at Paddy Burke Memorial Park. Both games were very competitive and our U11 sides continued to show great skill and ability on the night. Our U 11s look forward to a trip to Keel next Monday evening.

On Wednesday evening our U9 boys took four 7 a side teams to face Kerins O’Rahillys at Ballyrickard in Tralee. Our teams played excellent football and fantastic teamwork in each game throughout the evening. Our U9s look forward to travelling again this week to Kilcummin on Sunday.

The week finished off with a bang in the Central Region U13s as with the ground still buzzing with the senior teams victory over Laune Rangers our U13 started to warm up to face Austin Stacks. An absolutely enthralling game of football ensued with our U13 team claiming a great win by a single point at full time. The final score and its Churchill up next Sunday for our U13s.

Academy:

Our U6 academy session this week focussed on honing our important team playing skills of passing accurately while moving with the ball.
As always, the kids were well up for the challenge, even in the pouring rain. We finished up our session this week with our biggest game of football yet and all the coaches remarked afterwards how well all the players did. We had some lovely goals and points scored but what was most impressive was the teamwork displayed by all. The future of Ballymac is bright!
Well done to our U7s who had a match V Firies in Farranfore on Sunday as well.
Keep up the practicing everyone!
Our academy will finish on Sunday 17th October and we will return again in early March. We will have more information on our last day closer to the time.

U13 Blue team
On Sunday Our u13 Boys travelled west to take on Annascaul/Lispole in the first round of Division 2 of the Central Region.
Two early goals saw us take control of the game and the home sides cause wasn’t helped when one of their better players had to leave the field with an injury.
At half time we led on a 2-5 to 0-5 scoreline.
We outscored the opposition 0-2 to 0-0 in the third quarter.
The last quarter saw Annascaul/Lispole put in a huge effort to rescue the game and when they scored a goal with ten minutes remaining it gave them a great boost.
However full credit to our Boys who worked the ball up the field to raise a green flag of their own.
The home side continued to battle for scores to get back into the game but some resolute defending ensured we were victorious on a 3-8 to 1-8 scoreline.
Our Gold teams game V Ardfert did not go ahead.

Ladies News

On Wednesday 22nd Sept the U12 North Kerry League Division 4 Shield final was played in Ballymacelligott.
Opposition on the night came in the form of Duagh who finished in third place in the league behind Ballymacelligott.
The game was played in glorious sunshine and refereed by John Ross.

Ballymac turned up to the game with three absentees from the squad
Our Reliable goalkeeper Grace and popular Mentor Fintan Kelly were both absent due to the sad passing of the Late Donal Kelliher Castleisland.
(Grandfather of Grace and Father in law of Fintan) May Donal Rest in Peace.
A minute’s silence was observed at the beginning of the game as a mark of respect to Donal’s memory.
Also absent due to injury was Cait Griffin Kirby and we wish her a speedy recovery.
With the experience of having found Duagh difficult to break down from our previous encounter “Take your points” was the instruction from the sideline to the players.
In the first quarter Ballymac duly obliged and scored 7 unanswered points from four different scorers.
Michelle O’Connor opened the scoring with a point from play followed by a long rage free off the boot of Molly O’Connor,
Two further points from play again from Michelle O’Connor before Emily Heffernan opened her account with a well worked point,
Molly O’Connor obliged with another free before Olivia Sweeney finished out the quarter with a well taken point from play.
This trend continued into the second quarter with four further points from play for Ballymac to a solitary Duagh goal.
Ballymac’s Scores in this quarter came from Fiona McCarthy 0-02 (Fiona’s fielding on the night has to be mentioned as it was flawless)
and two further points from Emily Heffernan who was proving a real menace to the Duagh rearguard as were fellow players Tara Slatery and Aideen Healy.

Making her debut in goals was Kate O’Neill who stepped in for missing Grace Kelly.
Kate did not disappoint; her kickouts alone gave Ballymac a great platform to launch attacks and she made some great saves along the way.
The Ballymac Defence was very alert throughout only allowing Duagh in for one goal in the opening Half.
Backs Alice Savage, Sorcha Healy, Sinead Scanlon, Abigail Geary and Aoibheen Sheehan were rock solid.

Half Time Score Ballymac 0-11 Duagh 1-00

At half time the shape of the Ballymac team was completely changed to allow players try new positions and give the bench a run.
The third quarter was a much closer affair with Duagh Scoring 1.01 but Ballymac edged it with 1-02.
Scoring in this quarter for Ballymac Abigail Geary 0-01 and Molly o connor 1-1
Molly found a wat to finally breach the Duagh rearguard with a rocket of a goal.
The post had denied three earlier efforts from three different players and the duagh Goalie made some terrific catches and saves..

Into the final quarter the original shape of the team was restored to help see the game out.
Katie Turner put in a great shift all night and although she was unlucky with a couple of scoring efforts she did a wonderful job marking one of Duagh’s best players in midfield.
Ballymac added to their score with three points, Two from the boot of Michelle o Connor and one from Aideen Healy,
Duagh scored two points in this quarter and to their credit never gave up regardless of the score.

Final Score Ballymac 1-16 to Duagh 2-03

The Trophy was presented by Ballymac’s Own Linda Daly who is always to the fore in promoting Ladies football,
Joint Captains on the night Molly & Michelle O’Connor gave a great speech ending with three cheers to their opponents.

This concludes the Ballymac U12 Ladies Season for 2021.
The coaches would like to thank the players for their commitment to the team
and wish them all of the best going forward in football with Ballymac Gaa.
Thanks to the parents and supporters who came out to cheer us on in 2021 in all kinds of weather.

Tralee Parnells GAA Club News

.
Tralee Parnells U14 boys and some Executive members reminding everybody of the Clubs Run4Pieta fundraiser this weekend

Run 4 Pieta
Tralee Parnells Hurling and Camogie club will take part in a Run 4 Pieta event next weekend.  Various club members will run/walk from 6pm on Friday 1st until Sunday 3rd at 6pm.  Please join our club wherever you are located and get active for at least 30 minutes during this time and donate.

All funds raised will be shared equally between the club and Pieta.  Pieta provide an invaluable service to our community in raising the profile of mental health and providing support to those that might be feeling suicidal or those that have been affected by suicide.

Unfortunately, Pieta were very busy during the lockdown period so supporting this very worthy cause is more important than ever.

Also, this will be the main fundraiser for the day to day running of the club so we ask as many people as possible to get involved and to donate as much as they can.

We would really like if those who take part could post and tag a picture of their activity on our social media pages.  For more information and to donate go to http://bit.ly/tprun4pieta.

U8 Girls
The U8 girls had their final session of the season last Friday night. The coaches were delighted with the season as the girls had some great games and worked very hard all year with a noticeable improvement in skill levels.  The U10s will be in safe hands with the girls that are moving up! A special thanks to Aoife O’Sullivan and Saoirse Maloney our youth coaches who made our training so enjoyable!.

U9 Boys

Tralee Panells U9s who played in an in-house Munster Blitz in Caherslee

The U9s boys held their own in house blitz on Tuesday evening.  With teams representing Cork, Kerry, Clare and Limerick in the semi finals, to say it was competitive is an understatement. The final was played on Friday night with Limerick running out the winners. The coaches were delighted with the performance and display of skills at these games as all of the hard work during the year is really starting to show.  Well done boys.

U12 Boys

Tralee Panells U12s who played their third round match against Firies in the U12 County Competition

Tralee Parnells played Firies in the third round of the South Kerry group of the county U12 competition in Caherslee during the week.

The teams served up a highly entertaining game of hurling with the result hanging in the balance right up until the final whistle. Parnells started the brighter and led 1-3 to 0-3 at first water break. The away team dominated the second quarter scoring 2-1 without reply to lead 1-3 to 2-4 at half time.

Tralee Parnells had the better of the possession in the third quarter but trailed at the second water break by 1-5 to 2-7. In the final quarter Firies again had the better start and scored a well worked goal to lead by 8 points with seven minutes to play.

Playing their third match in the space of seven days, Parnells had to dig deep to get back in the game. An all out attack brought two goals in quick success to leave the deficit at two points.

In the final minute of the game Parnells scored their fourth goal to seal victory by a single point. Great credit is due to the players of both team for serving up a game of non-stop excitement from start to finish. Final Score Tralee Parnells 4-5 Firies 3-7

U12 Girls

Tralee Parnells U12 Amber Camogie Team who Played a Challenge match against Kileedy at the weekend

On Saturday morning the U12 girls welcomed teams from Kileedy in county Limerick.  A great morning of camogie was enjoyed by all involved.

The Parnells girls worked well and put their training into practice.  The coaches were delighted to get in some really challenging match practice before their upcoming county final matches. Many thanks to Kileedy for travelling to Caherslee and to David Brick for organising the event.

Tralee Parnells U12 Blue Camogie Team who Played a Challenge match against Kileedy at the weekend

U14 Boys

The U14 boys took on a strong Ballyduff side in the North Kerry Championship last Friday evening in Ballyduff.

The Parnells boys weren’t daunted by the task and took the game to the home side from the start. With David Sargent playing his 3rd midfielder role to perfection and Eoin Moriarty and Dan Maloney driving on from midfield, Parnells were the better team for the 1st quarter. But for some wayward shooting, Parnells could have built a strong position, but instead Ballyduff gradually got a foothold in the game and started running at the Parnells defence.

They had a few points on the board when a looping shot ended up in the net. This was quickly followed by another Ballyduff goal, with only a Dan Maloney point to show for Parnells efforts. Half time score: Ballyduff 2-2 Parnells 0-1.

For the second half, the boys really raised their game and started to chip away at the lead. Eoghan Costello was starting to trouble the Ballyduff defence and was winning and converting frees. Most of the play was near the Ballyduff goal and Parnells managed to reduce the deficit to 3 points.

However, Ballyduff hit a purple patch and with a few attacks managed to stretch the lead again, getting a crucial goal with about 5 minutes to go.

That didn’t deter the Parnells boys and they pushed on again. Conor Dennehy, who was having a great game at centre back, joined the attack and hit a great point.

Just before the end, a dangerous ball was batted out by the Ballyduff goalkeeper, but Jack Shanahan was on hand to sweep it to the net. It was no more than the boys deserved. Well done to all the boys on a great performance. Final score: Tralee Parnells 1-7 Ballyduff 3-7.

Minor Hurling

Tralee Parnells faced Rathmore last Sunday evening in Rathmore in the Co. Minor Shield semi-final. Parnells had beaten Rathmore earlier in the season in the Co. League but were expecting a much tougher challenge this time around on their home patch.

Rathmore got off to the better start and were first to score with a pointed free.  Parnells gradually started to come into the game and a great point from play by Darragh Maloney after 4 mins was followed by another one by Sean Barrett after 8 minutes.

However from there to the 1st water-break, Rathmore were on top and a speculative shot resulted in a goal which was kicked to the net and at the break Rathmore led by 1-4 0-2. Parnells finally found their rhythm after the water-break and dominated for the remainder of the half.

After 20 minutes, a short 65 found Jack Doyle and his shot found its way all the way to the net. Andrew Kerins, who was everywhere, got two points from play soon after and he was also clinical from frees scoring 3 points from placed balls before half-time.

Rathmore just added a solitary point in reply. Half-Time Tralee Parnells 1-7 Rathmore 1-5. The 3rd quarter was more of a cagey affair with neither team dominating.

Parnells were more wasteful with possession with a number of wides, though Andrew did add 2 more points, from a free and from play. Rathmore replied with a free.

Going into the final quarter, Parnells held a 3 point lead and needed to drive on to seal the victory. However, it was Rathmore that came out after the 2nd water break with all guns blazing. They scored the first two points after the break to make it a one point game.

Colm Browne, up from half back, had a great point from play to increase the margin to two again. However, indiscipline by Parnells allowed Rathmore a number of scoreable frees and they drew level and then took a 1 point lead. Andrew Kerins drew the sides level again with a free after Dan Moloney, on as a sub for Conor Kirby, was fouled.

Rathmore responded with a point of their own to retake the lead. But the Parnells boys wouldn’t lie down and they levelled again with another Kerins point from play after 24 mins. At this stage, it was all Parnells, but they couldn’t get the score they needed to edge them in front. A number of balls dropped short and were batted out but there was no-one to apply the finishing touch.

A great effort by Darragh Maloney under pressure just fell the wrong side of the post. From the resultant puck-out, Rathmore worked the ball down the pitch and another ill-timed tackle resulted in a straight-forward free for Rathmore, which they scored to the delight of the home crowd. Though Parnells had one more chance to attack from the puck-out, yet another free was awarded against them and though it didn’t result in a score, the final whistle followed and Rathmore had won a dramatic victory.

Ultimately Parnells had too many wides, 12 in all, and this proved crucial to the final result. So, no silverware for Tralee Parnells U17s this year but as they had demonstrated all season, they fought to the very end and weren’t found wanting for effort. After the match, team Managers Dermot and Micheál thanked the team for their commitment throughout the year and particularly wished the older players well and said they hoped to see them in the Parnells Senior jerseys next year.

Juvenile Academy

U5’s: Eleven tough girls and boys braved the heavy rain Sunday morning and put in a great effort.

The session was all about movement, mostly trying to dodge the rain and stay warm!

We finished off with a fun game where Enda Moriarty and Bobby Dennehy really stood out with some super runs and fine kicking.

Conor Dowling really contributed during training and the game earning himself player of the week.

U7’s: The wet conditions during training this morning didn’t deter the boys and girls who all put in a huge effort during the session. Madeline Plumney put in a huge effort and earned herself the player of the week trophy. Keep up the practice at home everyone. As always big thanks to all the trainers.

U8 Girls: The forecast wasn’t wrong & the heavens opened on our enthusiastic girls this morning! We kept moving & practiced a lot of running, evasion, 4 steps rule, kicking technique & 1 vs 1 play. We were joined late in the session by some of our under 10 group for a very up tempo enthusiastic match with all the girls getting the hang of passing & space awareness.

Well done to Olivia & Amelia for great grasp of under 8 match play. As always Emma Gilbride tried her heart out & gave it her all to eventually make her a very deserving player of the week. We really hope to finish our season with an under 8 match. Fixture to be confirmed in the coming days.

U9’s: Well done to our 18 lads who braved the heavy rain on Sunday morning. We had a fantastic session and all coaches were hugely impressed by the effort and application of the lads in tough conditions.

Our training game was hard fought and went to the wire with a top class finish from Oscar deciding it in the end.

Jace Flynn was in great goal scoring form and took home player of the week but we also had outstanding displays of tackling from Tiarnán and foot passing by Darragh Flahive.

We play St Senans at home on Thursday evening and will confirm timing later in the week.

U10 Girls: Thanks to Joe Costello for stepping in with the under 10 girls this morning for an enthusiastic skills session in the lashing rain! This group has really improved in recent months and we look forward to our last competition of the season next Monday evening 4th October in St Pats. We will host Castlegregory and Annascaul, each team will play 2 short matches sharp at 6pm. We look forward to returning the fixture to these 2 teams and hopefully seeing how far we have come this season.

Today we welcomed Dayna to the group, delighted to have you and any more girls/ friends from school to join us and boost our numbers going forward.

U11’s: Our u11s had a relatively quiet week team this week in comparison to our action packed Summer and Autumn to date. We had no scheduled Go Games and our training session on Sunday was called off due to the deteriorating weather on the day. However our young players were out in force for training on Friday evening.

We had fast-paced, fun games with a focus on building team work. We finished with a modified game with an emphasis on passing the ball quickly to team mates, and tackling more agressively. The young players responded well and we saw some great tackling and work rate from Charlie, Thomas, Cillian, Paddy F, Rian, Sarah and Katelyn.

There was great running and passing from Ethan, Eve, Paddy C, Isaac, Noah, James and Jake. The recent Go Games have really helped develop our players skills and understanding of the game. It’s very important that we encourage our young players to keep working on their skills in between the weekly training sessions. Work on kicking, passing, catching and soloing, even for a short time every day, will really help their development.

Training continues next Friday at 6p.m. and Sunday at 12 noon at St Pat’s club grounds in Blennerville V92 RH98. A reminder to parents that all players are to have a gum shield and to wear it at training and to register on foireann.ie

U12 Girls: Well done to all the enthusiastic girls this morning who braved the heavy rain in St pats & it didn’t put them off

We focused on hand passing & blocking down & shooting drills the task for this week was to try to get the girls to use one hand when the girls are kicking to score example right hand with right foot & same with the left

We followed with a mini match bringing up some of the senior girls from under 10 Kaela,Saorlaith, Ailbhe & Grace during the match we advised the girls to shoot when they got the chance to & we saw excellent performances from all the girls even in the down pours A special mention to Niamh Murphy for listening & showing her skills throughout the session and taking home player of the week congratulations Niamh.

We also welcome on board Therese and Jonathan as coaches. Both have excellent football backgrounds so we are very happy to have you both going forward.

Our next round of the Tralee town board league is this Wednesday @ 6pm away to John Mitchels

Keep up the practicing girls at home & remember your task.

U13’s: Naomh Pádraig 3-16 v 2 12 Ceirín O’Rathallaigh

This was a very evenly contested game played on Friday last.  In the last 5 minutes, we scored 2 goals to capture a hard-earned victory.  Both sides played attacking and open football and both teams had periods of dominance.  Well done to our team who played well despite missing some players from our squad.

Panel J Cashman (capt), F Carmody, J Flahive, J Bowler, BO’Leary, R Culloo, D Murphy, L O’Connor, C Sheehan, G Scollard & D Murphy.

Our next game is against Castlegregory in our final game of the competition.  Fixture will be confirmed during the week.

Seniors

Grp 1 Rd 3 Kerry Petroleum Junior Club Championship

Brosna 0-10 St Pats 0-09

St Pats were defeated by the narrowest of margins in Brosna last Sunday afternoon in which David O’Callaghan scored 5 points.

Playing under wet conditions, the home side raced to a 3-point lead within 7 minutes. We soon settled and David registered our first point after 8 minutes from over 45 metres, and he followed with another 4 minutes later. Kieran also converted a free leaving both teams with 3 points apiece going into the 1stwater-break. With the home side on the ascendancy, our defence line were constantly put under pressure with young Niall McCarthy in the thick of it all. We took the lead for the first and only time after David pointed after 25 minutes but 2 further points from Brosna ensured that they were 5 points to our 4 at the end of the first half.

The second half saw Brosna’s Paul Walsh converting a free within a minute of restarting. Not too long afterwards, Luke Mulligan reduced the deficit with a well-taken point from a tight angle however, Brosna kept up the pressure on our backs which resulted in 2 more points for the home team. After the 2nd water break, we had a good amount of possession and added points of our own with Brendan Poff and Luke Mulligan contributing to close the gap to a point. We had chances to put up some scores on the board but Brosna defended in numbers late in the game to see out the match.

Overall, it was a better performance from the team and we were unfortunate to lose Paul McMahon 3 minutes into the match through injury. We wish him a speedy recovery. This result however means that we will be in a Junior Premier Club Relegation play-off against Waterville. This match will be played on Saturday October 9 at 4pm in Cromane with extra-time and result on the day.

Minor County Championship

Congratulations to the St Brendan’s Board Minors who defeated Kenmare District last Saturday afternoon in Kenmare in round 2 of the Keane’s Supervalu MCC on a scoreline of 4-20 to 2-10 points. St Pats are represented by Liam O’Sullivan (selector), Cillian Lynch and Adam Hegarty (players).

IT was great to see crowds back at Listowel Racecoure on Friday for Ladies Day.

Back, after an absence of two years, it saw women from all over the country and beyond don some amazing fashions to impress the judges.

Maritess McCarthy from Cork was deemed the best dressed lady on Friday, but the competition was fierce as you can see below. Scroll down for photos…

Finnegan On Films: Some Oscar-Winning Classics To Be Enjoyed

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, on a diverse range of movies on the box this week…

Perhaps it is just my infantile sense of humour, but Rowan Atkinson just cracks me up, whether it is Mr. Bean, his stand up routines or as the bumbling secret agent Johnny English.

The character made his debut in a credit card advertisement back in the Eighties.  It has spawned three films, the third of which is Johnny English Strikes Again (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1).

A Cyber attack has exposed MI7’s field agents, so they have to reactivate their inactive personnel. Johnny is now a geography teacher using his espionage skills to teach his students.  He manages to incapacitate his fellow agents and is therefore given the mission to save the day.

Continued below…

.

With the assistance of his loyal sidekick Bough (Ben Miller), and the usual gadgets (explosive jelly babies anyone?) as well as a Russian spy Ophelia (Olga Kurylenko), this is a fun romp through the spy genre.

Byzantium (Saturday 9.40pm TG4) is a different type of Vampire film with a strong Irish contingent.  A mother and daughter vampire duo are on the run.  They come to a seaside town in search of a hiding place, but despite their efforts, their past catches up with them.

Starring Gemma Arterton as Clara and Saoirse Ronan as Eleanor make for an engaging pair, and they are ably supported by Sam Riley, Johnny Lee Miller and Maria Doyle Kennedy.  No one can direct a cinematic atmosphere like Neil Jordan and this is another winner.

Speaking about an interweaving series of underworld storylines, you cannot find better than Pulp Fiction (Saturday 9.45pm RTE2).

A series of incidents involving two Los Angeles hit men, a boxer, a gangster’s wife and two small time criminals take place out of chronological order, each scene of which has inspired countless memes and favoured quotations.

Starring John Travolta in the career-reviving role of Vincent Vega, Samuel L Jackson as his partner in crime Jules, Bruce Willis as aging Boxer Butch, Uma Thurman as Mia and, my favourite, Harvey Keitel as Winston Wolfe, a “cleaner” with a unique skill set, this regularly appears as one of the best films of the decade, or indeed, ever!

Directed and written by Quentin Tarantino, this is a classic example of the power of the screenplay.

You can make an excellent case for My Left Foot (Saturday 12.45 RTE1) as the greatest ever Irish film.

Directed by Jim Sheridan, and adapted by Sheridan and Shane Connaughton from the Christy Brown memoir of the same name, it tells the story of Brown, a man born with cerebral palsy, but became a world famous artist and writer, through the use of his aforementioned left foot.

Staring Daniel Day-Lewis as Christy Brown (with Hugh O’Connor playing the young Christy) Brenda Fricker as Christy’s mother Bridget and Ray McAnally as Christy’s dad Patrick, this received five Academy Awards nominations including Best Picture, and winning Best Actor for Day-Lewis and Best Supporting Actress for Brenda Fricker.   Enjoy and stay safe!

SO, things are finally getting back to normal….and fashion helps!

Friday at Listowel Races saw the first real McElligotts Honda Ladies Day take place in two years, with Maritess McCarthy from Cork, resplendent in a fitted statement red dress with matching red coat and sapphire blue headpiece, catching the eye of judge Celia Holman Lee to win the title of McElligotts Honda Best Dressed Lady 2021.

A nurse with CUH in Cork, it was the first time overall winner Maritess had ever been to a race meeting – and she certainly dressed to impress in a classic pencil style, crêpe midi dress with an asymmetric neckline and full sleeves by renowned designer Roland Mouret which she purchased for half price in a recent sale.

She accessorised her look with red heels featuring a diamanté strap. Her headpiece was by Elaine White based in Cork. Of course, Maritess was one of many amazing ladies looking stylishly stunning at the racecourse on Friday, which you can see below. Scroll down for photos…

“We are committed as a Government to supporting students with special educational needs and I believe that this additional accommodation will go further to support the children of St Ita’s and St Joseph’s. It was a pleasure to be able to meet with the remarkable staff of the school today especially the special needs assistants who are providing an invaluable service to these children. This extension is a mark of the great work, service and diligence that this school provides to the area and I would also like to congratulate them on their 50th anniversary.”

The Minister visited the school on Friday to meet with staff and students including Principal Grace Sheehan. The school is also celebrating its 50th year in existence this year.
