DEATH OF BRENDAN DOWLING: There was great sadness in the Club and in the local community last Tuesday (20th Sept) when news broke of the death of our current Club President, Brendan Dowling. Brendan was appointed to that position in 2010 following the passing of Fr. Mícheál Galvin and like Fr. Mícheál he took a keen interest in Club affairs during his tenure of the last twelve years.

Brendan began his involvement with the Club with success. In 1955 he was a member of the great MH team that won the MH Co. Championship that year – defeating a fancied Ballyheigue team by 9-4 (31) to 2-2 (8). Brendan wore the Number 8 jersey that day and he and his fellow centre-field man, Frank Tiernan dominated mid-field on that September day and contributed in no small way to our brilliant victory.

Two years before that, at the aged of 16, he was a member of our MF team that reached the 1953 Co. Final, going down to Castleisland in a low-scoring game (1-0 to 0-1).

When his playing days were over he continued his involvement in Club affairs and served as Assistant Secretary for a number of years before becoming one of the Club’s outstanding  Chairmen for a four year term during the 1986-1989 period. It was during Brendan’s time as Chairman that the Club developed their new Clubhouse/Bar in Connolly Park which was officially opened in June 1989.  His sons Eddie and Tommy played with the Club – Eddie was a member of the SF Co. Championship winning team in 1994.

And what a turn-out on Saturday morning for the removal of his remains from Connolly Park to St. Brendans Church and from there to Rath Cemetery. Thanks so much to everyone who took part in the Guard of Honour and to everyone who contributed during the Mass and the Graveside, including our own Club Chairman, Shane Lynch.

SYMPATHY: Sincere sympathy is also offered to the families of the following who died recently:  Eileen O’Mahony (nee Turner), Leith West and formerly St. Brendan’s Park; John O’Hanlon, Upper Tonevane; Michael Doran, Casements Ave. (brother of the late Richard, one of the Club’s great Card Players); and Margaret McCarthy (nee Doran), Rockpark Ave. and formerly Brosna.

SENIOR FOOTBALL: Mid Kerry 1-15; Austin Stacks 1-7

With both sides already through to the quarter finals this 3rd and final round –robin qualifier was just to determine first and second positions on the Group 3 table and in Beaufort on last Sunday afternoon (25th Sept) Mid Kerry led all the way through this game to achieve this top of the table status.

After a measured start by our lads on at least three occasions it was the home side who opened the scoring after three minutes and they added two more points just inside the 10th minute. From the kick-out Conor Horan won possession and after a good move up field it was Conor again in possession to open our scoring with a well-taken point from play. A minute later David Mannix scored our second from a free after a foul on team captain, Michael O’Donnell. Both sides then had a point each by the 15thminute – ours from Conor Jordan after being put through by Kieran Donaghy. We failed to score during the second quarter while Mid Kerry added three more to put them four ahead at the break (0-7 to 0-3).

Seán Quilter, who came on for the second half, had a pointed free inside the second minute but then Mid Kerry added two from play in quick succession to put them five ahead. We were back in the game by the 37th minute when Michael O’Donnell netted to reduce their lead again to two points. Mid Kerry pointed again three minutes later and then during a seven minute spell up to the 49th minute we produced our best performance of the afternoon, scoring three unanswered points to level the game for the first time.

However that was as good as it got for us as we failed to score for the rest of the game while Mid Kerry added a further five points and a consolation last minute goal. Their goal tally could have more but for at least three outstanding saves by Wayne Guthrie. The first came in the 23rd minute of the first half. The second came in the 22nd minute of the second half. We all thought those two were outstanding , and they were, but it’s difficult to find a word to describe his third and final save in added time – ‘awesome’ is hardly sufficient to describe it.

Cian Purcell missed the game though injury after making his Co. Championship debut last week. Also making their debuts today were Eoghan Carroll and Gearóid Fitzgerald.

Prior to the game there was a Minute’s Silence in honour of our recently deceased Club President, Brendan Dowling.

Team: Wayne Guthrie, Colin Griffin, Jack O’Shea, Niall Fitzmaurice, Greg Horan, Conor Jordan (0-1), Paul O’Sullivan, Michael O’Donnell (Capt) (1-0), Barry Shanahan, Armin Heinrich, Michael O’Gara, Conor Horan (0-2), Shane O’Callaghan (0-1), Kieran Donaghy, David Mannix (0-1 – one free).

Subs used: Seán Quilter (ht) (0-1 free), Adam Curran (38m), Ronan Shanahan (40m), Eoghan Carroll (52m), Gearóid Fitzgerald (58m).

The knock-out quarter finals will now go ahead on the week-end after next with a possible double header in Austin Stacks Park on the Saturday night (8th Oct) and in Fitzgerald Stadium on the Sunday afternoon. We have drawn Feale Rangers and it will be Dingle .v. Dr. Crokes; Mid Kerry .v. Templenoe and East Kerrys .v. Kenmare Shamrocks.

County Championship Round 3 Result

Spa  4-13

Kerins O RAHILLYS 0-16

We traveled to Spa Killarney for our final game in this years Senior County Championship on Saturday evening.

In a game that was irrelevant to both sides , having both lost in rounds one and two. Lining out with out a number of regulars gave us an opportunity to give game time to a number of panelist’s who have put in a huge effort all year.

While we competed well for long periods of the contest , the home team pulled away late on when they got through for a couple of goals.

The fixture brings our involvement in the competition to a disappointing end having lost convincingly in all three rounds.

The management and players particularly will now need to lift themselves for the upcoming Club Championship Final against Templenoe, which will no doubt be a very difficult task, but one that would salvage some satisfaction for the years effort.

KERINS O’RAHILLYS: Shane Foley; Darragh McElligott, TJ Heaphy, Padraig Neenan; Ben Hanifan (0-2) , Karl Mullan, Cian Sayers (0-2), Sean Walsh (0-1), Tom Hoare 0-3 (2f), Daniel Bowler, Barry John Keane 0-3 (2f, 1m), Padraig Griffin; Darragh O’Connor 0-3 (1f), Diarmuid O’Sullivan (0-1f), Conor Hayes (0-1). Subs: Keelan Crowe for P Griffin (ht), Gearoid Dillane for D O’Sullivan (45 mins), Stephen Nix for TJ Heaphy (50 mins).

KERINS O’ RAHILLY TEAM
KOR 1-07
Austin Stacks 3-10
Last Tuesday we met Austin Stacks in round 3 of the Town League. It was our rivals who struck the psychological first blow on the night.

We will be going for glory during the week as we’ll  be in Connolly Park next Tuesday evening as ourselves and Austin Stacks again  do battle for a place in the final. The scene has been set, will be do it.

U12 Strand Road Blues team

STRAND ROAD BLUES
Strand Road Blues 3-05
Churchill 5-05

Pressure is for tyres and our young blues were determined from the start to prove that last Wednesday in Pat Healy Park scoring the opening point. Churchill then got a quick grip on the game and both teams started feeding a hungry attack to leave the score at half time Strand Road Blues 3-03 to Churchill’s 4-02.

The visitors continued to add to their tally with a point straight into the second half followed  by a point from the home side….

Our team manager Mary was delighted with her girls on their performance of the year. Great team work and we’re  proud of each and every one of them.

Next Wednesday both teams meet again, this time in the Spa pitch for the semifinal. Best wishes to everyone!

Plenty of laughter from the pitch during the game and messing galore! Great to see so many happy faces coming off at home time.
We’re delighted to welcome Reagan to our team. Looking forward to seeing you!

Best wishes to everyone on Tuesday evening as we travel to Beale for the North Kerry league.

SENIOR LADIES
Glenflesk 3-06
Kerins O’ Rahilly 2-03

Well done to our ladies who played Glenflesk in the Championship semifinal last Sunday morning in Glenflesk. We only had 13 players because of college and work but our ladies gave it their all against the Glenflesk team.

We struggled to score much in the opening half. Unfortunately this allowed the home team to pull ahead and we were unable to catch up.

From number 1 right through to number 13  the girls played as a team giving great account of themselves . We didn’t come through the battle to claim the honours but we will be back in time..

Many thanks to everyone who travelled to support .

COLLEGE WISHES
College bound are many of our ladies, off in different directions around the country are these besties! Best wishes to all of you from everyone in our club!

We are delighted with the dedication showing by each child throughout the last number of months. Thanks to their parents for their continued support and encouragement each week. And to our dedicated coaches who give up their time to train and encourage the children.

U5 Boys:
Another fantastic turnout by our U5 Boys this weekend.

They might be our youngest players but they have showing great ability over the last number of months. This week the focus was on kicking with accuracy through fun games. They enjoyed a few fun games at the end as they do every week. Well done to all the boys keep up the good work.

U6 Girls:
The girls enjoyed their training session which was filled with fun and key skill learning as always. They practiced their kicking and hand passing skills
and finished the training session with some fun games for all to enjoy. Well done to all the girls and their wonderful coaches.

U7 and U9 Boys:
The GAA is an organisation that thrives on traditions. On Saturday 24th of September our U7 and U9 boys kept a 45 year tradition alive as they travelled to play Dr. Crokes in Killarney.

Young footballers from Kerins O Rahillys have been making this trip since the late 70s and a great rapport has been built between the two clubs over the years. Our U7 and U9 teams played three games each and had a wonderful experience.

The bus trip and the treats after went down very well with all the players. Well done to all our young narries and their coaches for giving their time to provide a great day out for the boys.

U8 and U10 Girls:
Enjoyed another morning of training with their wonderful coaches. The girls are preparing for their  next game in a few weeks time by concentrating on the accuracy of their kicks and looking for their fellow players to pass it off to. Well done to each and every one of them on a fantastic training session.

U11 Boys:
Our U11 boys will play Firies this Thursday evening in Ballyrickard for a challange game.  Please check clubZap for more details.

Juvenile Academy

U5

Under 5s enjoyed a lovely morning of football training. We practiced our ball handling skills, kicking, passing and high catch. We finished the session with a game of sharks and fishes. Well done to our players of the week, Kelly, and Finn.

U7 Boys

We had a great session this morning, we started with a warmup followed by some fun games and drills and finished up with a very competitive match at the end. Very well done to Oisin our Player of the week. Thanks to coaches James, Dave, and Mike.

U8 Girls

St Pats U8 girls traveled to john Mitchells for our 3rd match with them this year. We were delighted to have 13 girls available for St Pats versus initially smaller numbers for John Mitchells. We started with one large match but quickly balanced the numbers and split to 2 matches for more ball touches for each girl.

We showed great skills in attack and mid field and some great link up play between the girls. We have some very strong girls going up to under 10s next year & are delighted to have a strong girl’s side to our club to build on for the future.

Looking forward to a fun training session next Sunday and an action-packed fun end of season day on Sunday 9th October at St Pats.

U9

We had 15 players training this morning. We started with an exciting penalty shootout with senior goalkeeper Paudie Bailey in goal.

Fionn Sharp showed great composure to win the shoot out! We followed with a warmup, stretching, a handpassing and movement drill and a scoring drill incorporating movement into space and passing. We finished the session with a good competitive game.

U10 Girls

Well done to all 15 girls who turned out for St. Pats on Sunday for their final game of the season against John Mitchels. It is great to see such a big number of girls still playing football towards the end of the season.

15 was our biggest number for any match or training session this year. They all played really well in every position and have improved so much since we started 7 months ago in February. Last week’s player of the week finally got her hands on the trophy to bring home for the week. Well done to Jessica Lacey our final and well deserving player of the week for 2022.

Next week Sunday 2nd will be our final training session of the season and the following Sunday 9th will be a family fun day to mark the end of our Junior Academy for the season 2022.

U11

The u11’s have been very active over the last two weeks. On Thursday Sept 15th, we hosted Ballyduff in a series of challenge games in Blennerville. Ballyduff were the slightly better team in both games, but it was great to have our biggest turnout of the year with 25 boys togging out.

On Sunday 18th, we had another great turnout of over 20 players where we had an in-house game amongst ourselves. Last Thursday, our windmill team travelled to An Ghaeltacht to take on the locals in the West Kerry Go Games program. Thanks to John and Fiacc for bringing the lads back and they all performed well.

We trained again last Sunday with a few regulars missing due to the County Cross Country Championships, but it was still a great session coordinated by John, Fiacc, Brian and Michael. This coming Thursday, our windmill team are due to host a Dingle team in the last game of the West Kerry Go Games in Blennerville at 6:30pm.

We are trying to also arrange a game for the Bridge team for the same evening which we will update parents through the WhatsApp group. Also, two huge dates to note for the diary are the end of Season Parish League with the u9 boys. This will take place next Sunday October 2nd with the finals on Sunday October 9th. If last year’s league was anything to go by, these games should be epic, so we look forward to seeing as many club members as possible down there to support the lads!

U12 Girls

The U12 girls played their 2nd match in the town league last Tuesday evening where they played absolutely amazing away to Na Gaeil and were very unlucky to finish the game with only a 2-point loss. We are very proud of the girls and this performance shows how far they all have progressed.

Every player played outstanding, but we have to compliment Kaela Reidy and Alannah O Mahoney on their performance. Kaela scoring 1-5 and getting into great positions while Alannah was catching so many balls out of the sky and clearing the ball on numerous occasions.

Well done everyone, you did us all proud once again. On Thursday last the girls continued their couch to 5K and also trained on Sunday morning with another great training session. Kaela Reidy was the well-deserved winner of the trophy this week as She played an outstanding game on Tuesday evening and definitely had her scoring boots on.

She also put in a great effort at training on Sunday. Well done, Kaela. We are playing away to Na Gaeil in a semifinal of the town league this Tuesday evening at 6.30. Hopefully, the St pats girls will come out on top this time!

St Brendan’s

Round 3 of Garvey’s Supervalu Senior Football Championship against South Kerry took place last Sunday in Caherciveen, two of St Pats contingent played in this match Fergal O Brien was on the starting panel with Adrian Greaney come on to replace Alan O Donoghue. This match ended on a draw 0-16 points each.

Seniors

Our Seniors are scheduled to play away on the weekend of the 1st/2nd of October in the Tralee/St Brendan’s Senior Football Championship against Na Gaeil. Date and Time to be confirmed, Keep an eye on O Sheas Gala, Our Clubhouse and Byrnesworth for any updates on this fixture.

St Pats B

On Friday night last our seniors played against Ardfert B, this was a quick game from start to finish. We scored seven points in the first half of this game with them coming from three from Liam O Sullivan, point from Gary Savage, Two points from Brian Murphy and one point from Eoin Greaney. Ardfert got five points from this half, there was great effort to keep possession of the ball throughout. The first half ended St Pats 0-07 Ardfert 0-05.

Ardfert opening the second half with two points, as Eoin Greaney went up the field he was pulled and given a free. With this free, Eoin stepped up and landed in the top left-hand corner of the goals with a massive roar from the crowd at the sidelines. Eoin Greaney added two more points to his tally.

Ardfert replied with three points of their own, with experienced legs in the form of Sean Hayes who got a point of his own. Ardfert got a chance at goals and took it, which brought the score line to St Pats 1-10 to Ardfert 1-10.

With a draw we needed to keep pace and get ahead this came in the form of two points from Eoin Greaney and point from Sean Hayes. Ardfert scored another point, as the clock ticked on, we held onto the lead, and it ended St Pats 1-13 Ardfert 1-11.

Brian Murphy winning captain received the trophy presented by John Slattery Secretary of Tralee Board. Congratulations to the team, substitutes and management for this great achievement.

Congratulations

Congratulations to our U11 double duos Hugh and Tommy Costello and Rylan and Jace Flynn who represented Tralee Harriers last Sunday in County Cross Country Championships at u12 level.

The championships took place in the Killarney Demesne. All four ran a great race with the Costello boys finishing 2nd and 3rd and the Flynn twins running great but just finishing outside the medals. However, their solid performances were rewarded as a collective with Tralee Harriers winning a bronze medal in the team event. Well done lads!

Congratulations to our Senior B’s who were outright winners in the Tralee/St Brendan’s Junior League Group B Final against Ardfert B.

Speedy Recovery

To Cillian O Riordan who came off injured during the seniors B game against Ardfert last Friday night.

An Turas Mór

An Turas Mór is a call to our diaspora from all aspects of Kerry Business, Tourism, Sports and Cultural organisations spearheaded by Kerry County Council to come home and enjoy close to forty events and activities that will take place throughout the County during the month of October.

As part of this initiative, Parnells will host our inaugural seven-a-side Senior Hurling tournament on Saturday October 1st in Caherslee. The organising committee are busy liaising with clubs to finalise the list of participants.

At the moment we are delighted to confirm that Fr. Murphy’s Hurling Club from London will be in Tralee for the weekend. Keep watching our Social Media pages and our website for full details of what promises to be an exciting day of hurling.

U7 Hurling

Tralee Parnell’s under 7’s were back in action training in Caherslee on Friday evening. The boys are really giving it their all as they move into their last few weeks of the season.

The progress and skills they have developed this season are a credit to the club and were a beauty to watch as they finished training with a fun filled hurling match. Congratulations to this week’s players of the week, Jack Whelan and Noah Kirby.  Well done boys.

Tralee Parnells U8s at their final final training session of the season with head coach Hazel O’Leary and youth coach Caoilinn

U8 Hurling

The U8 Camogie squad had their final training session of the season onFriday evening in Caherslee. Manager Hazel O’Leary said “It was a pleasure to coach all the girls and to see their progress over the past six months. The girls are a fantastic bunch and they always had great energy. The Tralee Parnells U14 Blue Team who lost out to Cillard in the Div 1 Camogie County Final

U14 Camogie

The U14 Amber team put in a massive team effort last Tuesday night in Caherslee as they contested the Division 2 County Camogie final. The girls fought for every ball until the very last second of the game.

The managers were delighted with the performance especially in how the team continued to push forward and try to win as much possession as possible. The scoreboard didn’t reflect the effort by all players with their passion and never say die attitude being the outstanding feature of the evening.

Head coach Martina Lawless said afterwards; “Well done girls on a massive effort.  As a team they have improved such a lot since the start of the season. They should be proud of themselves. A big thank you to the parents for bringing the girls to training every week and to the other coaches (including Alan, now in Canada) and all club members and parents who supported us on the sideline and who sent lovely messages before and after the game”.

The Blue team were also in action as they contested the Division 1 final against Cillard. This was a cracking game where our girls started slowly but gained a foothold and finished the first half strong and at half time we were down by just a single point 1-03 to 0-05.

In a rip roaring second half Cillard again started the stronger and went five point up. Our girls never stopped fighting however and heading into injury time we were just two points down. Our girls pressed for a winning goal but phenomenal goalkeeping and defending from Cillard kept our girls at bay.

A 65meter free from Anna Chute was tipped over the bar to leave just one point between the teams but unfortunately referee John Ross blew the final whistle to the delight of the Cillard players and their supporters. Final score 1-08 to 2-06.  Congratulations to Cillard and well done to both teams for what was a fantastic game of camogie.

Tralee Parnells Senior Schools Camogie Tournament Winning Team

Schools Camogie Tournament

The second annual Tralee Parnells Senior Schools Camogie Tournament was played in Caherslee at the weekend and saw new winners in all categories.  The title holders Mounthawk faced a strong challenge from a combined team that had players from Presentation, Castleisland and beyond in their lineup.

Having put their heads together and come up with the team name Community of Nuns, they were confident enough to forego the usual decision of which side would wear bibs and confidently took to the field in navy worn outside the new Parnells jerseys, as they faced the Mounthawk side who had won so impressively in 2021.

From the throw-in, it was a fast paced and high scoring tournament on all sides, across all three legs.

The mentors were impressed with the skills on display and by the obvious improvement this season in several of the younger players who are stepping up to represent their schools at the senior age category.

The whole Tournament was played in a competitive sporting spirit across all the games and it was great to see the players enjoying expressing themselves on the field of play and working for each other.

There was silverware up for grabs across a number of categories and the perpetual trophies will all have new names engraved.

The overall Senior Schools trophy was presented to the victorious Community of Nuns team, who had seen great contributions from the players in their ranks.  Captain Clodagh O Sullivan accepted the trophy on behalf of her team.

There were a number of other trophies to be presented and next up was Orla Leahy who was the overall tournament top scorer across the different matches, with an impressive tally of goals and points.

No surprise to the spectators, who had witnessed Orla’s impressive work rate, skill and judgement.  Several competitors racked up strong scores in the next category, but the player who got the highest number of points awarded for skills displayed throughout the tournament, was Rachel Sargent.

The next trophy to be presented was the player voted as having made the best contribution across the games by all her peers and another worthy winner here was Emma Dunican.

A new category was the most improved young player and this honour went to Orla Buttimer who as an under 14 really impressed the onlookers with her contribution and determination all morning.

We congratulate all the winners on their well deserved awards.  We also would like to sincerely thank our generous sponsors at Cobi Sports, Coolballyshan stud and Fairies Cross Medical Centre.

It was lovely to see the colourful logos on the new sponsored jerseys that the players were able to show off in the Tournament photos.   A big thank you to the volunteers and parents who helped in the running of the tournament and provided delicious and nutritious snacks for the competitors.

Finally, a special word of thanks to Carmel O’Shea-Maloney, for organising officiating and running the Tralee Parnells Senior Schools Tournament for 2022.

SENIOR LADIES

Our senior ladies played Ballymac today in the county championship junior B semifinal in Ballymac, Mitchels having suffered a nine point defeat earlier in the competition entered the game as underdogs but the large crowd were treated to fantastic game of football which ebbed and flowed for the 60 plus minutes. Ballymac opened the scoring with 3 points on the trot before Mitchels settled with a free from Rachel and a point from Ava before we levelled 3 points each, with Mitchels Anna and Ashleigh taking control at the back and Sarah and Leona working hard at midfield fitted free from Rachel and Diana saw us go in at half time down a point with all to play for 0-5 to 0-6.

The second half opened at whirlwind fashion with both sides trading points before Ballymac hit for goal after the ball came off post. Mitchels didn’t panic and with Kayleigh solid in goals. Erica, Lauren, Carrie Shannon and Tanya defending vigorously we built through the lines to put Ava in for a goal after good approach work from Linda Rachel and Diana. The pace was frantic with no quarter given or taken. Mitchels continued to press and after a foul on Ava we were rewarded a penalty which Ava dispatched to the net score now Mitchels 2-5 Ballymac 1-7.Both defences were giving very little away so every ball was hard won entering the last 10 minutes Ballymac struck for a second goal to go 2 points up but our team rallied again and with Ellie and Eabha making there senior debut and a huge block from an Emma shot resulting in a long stoppage on play both teams continued to press Ballymac hit another point to go 3 up but in fairness Mitchels kept going and 2 further frees from Rachel reduced the score to the minimum margin to lose out by a point. Our girls gave a whole hearted display with a never say die attitude and can be very proud they didn’t leave the jersey down. Hard luck ladies in a fiercely contested game which the large support on edge until the final whistle. Best of luck to Ballymac in the Final ,

Na Gaeil GAA Club News

.

Senior Co. Championship: Last Saturday night our senior team travelled to Gallarus to play West Kerry in Round 3 of the Senior County Championship.

Despite playing with the aid of the strong breeze our lads got off to the worst possible start as West Kerry managed a goal straight from the throw in. This was quickly followed by a West Kerry point. Fortunately the reply from Na Gaeil was swift.

A Jack Sheehan point from play was followed by 2 Diarmuid O’Connor frees to leave just a point between the sides after just 7 minutes.

Next, a long ball from Jack Barry found Diarmuid O’Connor on the halfway line and he ran 40m before firing the ball over the bar to level the game. Scores came thick and fast after that with points from Jack Sheehan, Diarmuid O’Connor and Andrew Barry to just a single point for West Kerry to leave us ahead 0-7 to 1-2.

A West Kerry effort for a goal went just wide and from the resultant attack Jack Sheehan was on hand to rifle the ball to the net to stretch our lead to 5 points with just 18 minutes gone in the first half.

West Kerry added a point from a free before Jack Sheehan again hit the net following great work by Dan Goggin and James O’Connor. Our lead now was out to 7 points but to their credit West Kerry didn’t lie down.

Their next attack was well saved by Devon Burns but the rebound was volleyed to the net by the in-rushing Thomas O’Donnell. Two minutes later the same player added a second goal to leave just a single point between the teams approaching half-time.

The impressive Jack Sheehan slotted over a valuable point and then on the stroke of half-time Diarmuid O’Connor converted yet another free to leave the half-time score West Kerry 3-3, Na Gaeil 2-9.

The second half started with another point from a free by Diarmuid O’Connor before Darragh Reen got one from play. Then in the 5th minute came a big moment.

West Kerry were awarded a penalty which was brilliantly saved by Devon Burns. It rebounded out to a West Kerry player who looked certain to score but Devon blocked it a second time and we cleared our lines. Soon afterwards Devon converted a 45’ to increase our lead to 6 points.

West Kerry added 3 points in quick succession before Diarmuid O’Connor converted another free to halt their momentum. Crucially the next score was a goal by Darragh Reen after 17 minutes to put us in the driving seat again.

Further points from play by the excellent Diarmuid O’Connor and Dara Devine were cancelled out by 3 points by West Kerry as the game edged to full time. However the final score fell to the industrious Dan Goggin who was at the end of a flowing move and he finished to the net to leave the final score West Kerry 3-9, Na Gaeil 4-15.

It was an historic occasion for our lads, the club’s first ever victory in the Senior County Championship.

Well done to all the players and the management team on this great achievement.

U9 boys: Fossa u9s visited Na Gaeil yesterday morning. Half our panel played Fossa away last Sunday so this time it was the turn of our other half to put it up to the Killarney outfit! Our players did themselves proud displaying some fine football. Well done lads.

U13 boys: Our U13’s had the pleasure of hosting two teams from Mallow last Saturday in Killeen. It was a great occasion and there were two excellent games played. Plenty of food and teas and coffees after the matches allowed for a bit of mingling between players, parents and coaches. We also presented Mallow with a plaque to mark their visit to our club. We have no doubt there will be future encounters with Mallow for days like this. Thanks to Mick and George for refereeing.

U15 boys: Hard luck to our u15 lads who were unlucky to lose to Ardfert in the replay of the Kellihers Toyota Central Region Div 3 semi-final in Ardfert last Wednesday. The game was level approaching full time but Ardfert scored 2 points in quick succession to claim the win. Final score was Ardfert 2-11, Na Gaeil 2-9.

Ballymac Junior win Cahill Cup Shield Final Replay

Cahill Cup Shield Final Replay

Ballymacelligott 2-12

St Michaels Foilmore 2-10

Replays rarely entertain as much as the original fixture. However last Saturday night in Glenbeigh was a rare exception.

Ballymacelligott and St Michael’s Foilmore met once again in the Cahill Cup Shield Final and it was a nail-biting clash requiring extra time to separate the teams.

At half time the score was 1-07 to 02 in favour of Ballymac. The difference in this half was Ballymac took their scores and Ballyfoilmore were not as lucky in front of the goalposts.

It looked like an uphill climb for the South Kerry team at the start of the second half. They stook to their guns and scored point after point with a gaol and three points in the last seven minutes.  Ballymac scored two points in this half which left both teams level requiring extra time.

In extra time it was as exciting as it gets with a second goal from Daragh Regan and Ballyfoilmore scoring at the other end.

Both sets of players were tiring now.  Ballymac showed great resilience when it was 2-10 apiece and scored two vital points close to the end from Captain Barry Lyons and Ballymac’s great servant Frank O’Rahilly.

Christy Kileen from Coiste Chontae Chairrai presented the winning Shield to Captain Barry Lyons. He praised both teams for an exciting game and thanked Glenbeigh for the pitch and Referee Frank Twiss.

Barry Lyons thanked all the mentors and players from Ballymac for their commitment all year.

The Junior games proved to be great competitions for our club- blending the experienced with the inexperienced.

One could see the improvement in all the players as the year progressed proving that competitive game practice is vital for all players. Many Thanks to the management team of Tom Shea, Mike Sweeney, Sean Brosnan, Tony Silles and Ruairi O’Rahilly.

Ballymac Abú

Our next game is in the Tralee/St Brendan’s Junior League Group A Final

Ballymac B vs John Mitchels B

Saturday October 1st @ 5pm in Na Gaeil

U5 Academy report:

This week’s U5 academy session was all about fun and games. We used obstacle courses and slaloms of cones to work on their fundamental movements and included the much loved “beat the coach” penalty shootout to practice kicking and accuracy.

The greatest smiles, as always, came from our whole group games of Rollerball, stuck in the Mud, Sharks and Fishes and What Time is it Coach Cat. All the coaches are looking forward to another fun filled session next week

Under 10s

U8 & U10’s

We welcomed Na Gaeil to Ballymac on Sunday morning. Our U10’s split into 2 teams to play   A series of 9 a side games.  Our girls battled hard against a strong Na Gaeil side but continue to improve every game.

Our U8’s again showed that they face any team with confidence.
More friends were made again this morning as we are sure all these players will face each other many more times in the years to come.
Thanks to all involved from parents, players and Na Gaeil for a great morning.

Under 8s.

Our 9 s

We travelled to John Mitchell’s to play the locals on Sunday morning.

We had 3 Teams of 6 and all the boys really enjoyed themselves.

Great progress has been made over the last couple of months and again we advise all players to keep practicing their skills at home in their spare time.

We travel to Fitzgerald Stadium next week to play in the Dr Crokes Blitz and in 3 weeks’ time we play in the Munster GAA Blitz in Mallow.

U11 boys

Ballymac U11 boys played Scartaglen in the final of Castleisland District over in Castleisland on Sunday morning. While it didn’t go their way, the boys played their hearts out. They were definitely up against a tough side.

Congrats to Scartaglen. It was great to see our whole team come together whether it was to play or support. The parents turned out to support us also. Thanks so much to them.

We’ll see you all at training tomorrow evening 6.30-7.30 @ training field.

Under 13

Under 13 boys

Our U13 boys had a busy week with both teams facing Na Gaeil in Tralee. Our blue team were out on Tuesday night and despite a great first half performance the town side proved the stronger and ran out winners 3-11 to 3-05.

Our blue team faced an in form ‘A’ side fresh from beating the County champions the week before. The first half was a very tight affair with only 2 points between the teams at half time. Na Gaeil rattled us with a quick goal and 3 points but our lads battled back to within 6 points before the whistle went.

Na Gaeils superior numbers and their ability to rest key players was a major factor in their win.

Our older boys travelled to Newmarket for the Diarmuid o Brien Blitz on Saturday. In our first game we beat St Peter’s well by 3-08 to 1-03. We had a bye in the second round and comprehensively beat BK Plunket’s 4-12 to 0-03. Topping out group and qualifying for the final against a strong Firies who had narrowly lost the Div 2 final this year.

We got off to a great start with 2 great goals from Graham West and points from Jack Collins and Adrian o Conor. Firies had to dig deep and found their running game and came back to level the scores at half time.

Firies proved to be the fitter side and pressed on in the second half and despite some gallant play by All our lads won out by 2-12 to 2-07. The lads played very well and showed great character in defeat and duly accepted their runners up medals graciously from joint captains Shane Cassidy and Liam Rahilly.

senior Ladies

Ladies Senior Team

Ballymacelligott 2-8

John Mitchell’s 2-7

Both teams served up a very entertaining game in Ballymac, with the away team throwing the form book out the window. Ballymac were faster out of the blocks and led by 3pts to no score with scores from Keelin Enright (2) and Aisling o Connell (1) before 2 frees from Rachel Kilgallon bring John Mitchels into it. Indeed, Rachel and Eva O Connell Buckley were very prominent for John Mitchell’s and their strong ball carrying was causing problems for the Ballymac defence.

An Eve Creedon point for Ballymac was followed by 2 from Rachel Kilgallen, 1 free and 1 from play, leaving the teams level coming up to the short whistle. A Ballymac attack yielded a good score from Ella Quirke. Aisling O Connell and Eva O Connell Buckley traded scores. Halftime Ballymac 6pts to Mitchels 5pts

2nd half Ballymac worked a score from Róisín Rahilly but that was followed by a John Mitchell’s goal on the 15th min of 2nd half by Eva O Connell Buckley following a strong run. 2-point game now.

Ballymacelligott were winning plenty of ball but a combination of poor passing and good defensive play by John Mitchell’s prevented scores & turn overs were a regular occurrence.

However, a Sarah Scanlon goal for Ballymac looked like would be enough to see the home side prevail.  20mins in to 2nd half, Mitchell’s were awarded a penalty which Eva O Connell Buckley converted to give Mitchels a 1 pt. lead with 10mins left 2-5 to 1-7.

Ballymac girls responded brilliantly and a well worked team move saw Kate Collins crash the ball to the net to give Ballymac the lead again 2-7 to 2-5. From the kick out Ballymac pressure led to Keelin Enright kick her 3rd point of the game to give a 3 pt lead for home side with 2 minutes plus injury to play.

Mitchells tried their best and Eva and Rachel were leading the final attacks. 2 pointed frees from Rachel left a point in it before time ran out for the team in green and gold.

A good competitive semi-final which both teams contributed hugely to, well done to both sets of girls.

Ballymacelligott through to Junior B final following their success last season at Junior C.

Presentation Castleisland Launches ‘One Good School’ Initiative

THERE was an air of excitement Presentation Secondary School Castleisland as students and staff enjoyed the ‘One Good School’ launch day.

Jigsaw’s One Good School initiative is a two year comprehensive initiative which strives to support the mental health and wellbeing of young people, and those around them by developing a shared response for mental health across the whole school community.

“The initiative helps us as a school to provide a safe and supportive environment for building life skills, resilience and a strong sense of connectedness,” said Mairead Lane Cronin, One Good School lead teacher and Wellbeing leader.

The launch day began with the arrival of eight different outdoor activities provided by the business ‘It’s My Party’.

Throughout the day, all year groups got the chance to have some chill out time along with having fun with their peers.

“We felt it was important to highlight the need for students to take time out, get outside for fresh air, clear their heads, connect with others, laugh and overall just enjoy themselves,” said Mairead.

“All of this is integral to helping their overall wellbeing and mental health. Fostering healthy relationships among peers, school staff and parents is critical to a young person’s overall experience of school and their social, emotional and cognitive development.”

On the day, they also unveiled the new student and teacher wellbeing areas. Caoimhe Keogan from Jigsaw Kerry arrived to the school and cut the ribbon to officially open them both.

“These chill zone areas are bright and uplifting, we hope they will be a place for students and teachers to relax and take some time out when needed,” said Mairead.

“Caoimhe also unveiled the One Good School flag that we intend to proudly showcase outside our school for the year ahead. The day would not be a success without the help from our student council and international students.”

Going forward for the year ahead, students, teachers and parents will be completing courses online and watching webinars from the Jigsaw portal related to mental health, with some already completed.

“We look forward to our continued work with Jigsaw Kerry, and know that going forward the wellbeing of our students and staff is being well supported through the involvement with this fantastic initiative,” said Mairead.
