Jerry Foley Memorial Blitz

On a fine Saturday morning in Faranfore we kicked of the blitz against Miltown/Castlemaine.

We started this match in flying form and in the format of only 7mins a half we needed to start well as the round robin format would mean we could not lose more than 1 match all day to be in with a chance to win the tournament, We ran out eventual winners on a scoreline of 2-08 to 1-03.

Next up was Firies the home side and we had no rest as we had to start straight away we went in at half time up by a point, But we fell asleep for just a min and Firies punished us with 2 quick goals, Our lads tried there best to fight back but only 5mins left we couldn’t quite get there and we lost on a scoreline of 3-01 to 1-05.

We knew now we couldn’t afford to lose anymore games, And what the boys did from here was amazing the way they fought hard for each other.

Our 3rd match was against our Cork friends Newmarket, Who will be joining us for the Eric Mason u12 Blitz shortly. This match proved to be the start of what was a great few hours for the boys, There play and never give up attitude showed from the start and we ran out winners on a scoreline of 5-06 to 0-03.

Our 4th game was the game everyone wanted to see as it was apparent these were the best 2 teams on show so far. And what a match it was were there wasn’t an inch give from start to finish as our boy’s blocked down balls hit fair and hard shoulder’s and ran for every breaking ball, This was a very tight game where any mistake would cost either team the 2pts, But it was the Ballymac lads who gained the advantage and ran out winners on a scoreline of 1-03 to 1-02.

Our last round robin match was against Listry and we knew a win would take us to the final and we started off where the lad’s showed they wanted to play in that final and we ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of 4-07 to 0-05.

Jerry Foley memorial Blitz Final

This final was the final everyone wanted to see where the best 2 teams reached the final and after our round robin game we knew we wouldn’t get anything easy in this game.

The game started a furious pace and our backs were in a battle and everyone of them fought hard Mark o Connor has been one of the finds of the season and was ably assisted in the other corner by the ever reliable Jamie Burke in the half back line Tom Long and Michael Savage kept out attacks after attacks,

They covered every blade of grass in the half back line and also were using the ball well into the forwards,Our reserve defender when called in didn’t upset the flow of the team and settled in straight away where Conal Savage defended everything that came his way, In midfield we had our 2 joint Captain’s for the day Jack Slattery and Cathal White and these 2 were as solid as rocks all day and in this final nothing was any different,

In the forward’s we had some of the best moves and scores of the tournament all day and the 7 players who were playing there all day of Shane Gilroy, David Lucid, Conor Daly, William o Donoghue, Matthew Rogers, Luke Silies and Jack Joy showed that the future is very bright indeed and there play in the final was a joy to watch, Special mention must go to our Keeper Cian Harris who was in flying form all day long and kept us in many a game with some outstanding saves and bravery when coming for the ball.

The game was very tight at half time where we were up by 2pts, a quick halftime team talk and the lads were ready again 1 final 10mins and they were there, Kilcummin came at us and got back into it to draw level with only mins to spare,

But the never say die attitude of the boys proved to all of us that they are a very good team, Cian had the ball in goals where he kicked a lovely pass to jack who in turn passed to shane who the played a lovely ball over the top to Jack Joy who didn’t hesitate 1 bit and jumped high to fist the ball to the net with only 2 mins left to put us 3 pts in front,

Kilcummin cam straight down the pitch and tried there best to get through but the boys wanted this more and kept them out only 1 point was surrendered and we went out winners by 2pts on a scoreline of 3-6 to 1-10.

There was joyous celebrations after where the boys showed their gratitude to all present and thanked Firies for a wonderful tournament and to Kilcummin for a super fought final.

Well done everyone.

Saturday’s win proved to be a great boost for the lad’s as they played their best football of the year on Monday night with free flowing football and some super defending,

Not one of the lad’s looked tired from the blitz on Saturday and started this game off where they finished on Saturday we went in at halftime down by 2 pts,

During the talk at halftime the wanted to keep on winning and went straight out of the blocks in the 2nd half and turned around a 2pt deficit to a 7pt lead with only 10mins gone,

It was a joy to watch the football that was played by all 13 player’s Monday night and hopefully this last weekend’s triumph’s will bring the lads on for our remaining matches, Well done to all ye are flying and keep up the hard work on the field and at training.

We won on a scoreline of 5-12 to 3-08.
