Ballymac V John Mitchells

Sunday 10/02/2019

On a cold wet windy Sunday Ballymac and John Mitchells served up an enthralling contest that while hampered by a strong breeze still produced some exhilerating football.

After early points settled both teams Ballymac started to gain a grip on proceedings when Luke Sweeney finished a shot to the net to send the men in blue into a four point advantage.

Surging runs by Cian Counihan and Dara Keane allied to magnificent defensive displays by Barry Lyons and Micheal Reidy gave the Ballymac men a solid platform.

Dominant from the opposition kickout it seemed only a matter of time before Ballymac would break down the Mitchells defense but incredibly Ballymac spurned no less than five goal scoring opportunities, a statistic that would later come back to haunt them.

With a 1-6 to 0-3 lead at the half and facing into a strong wind in the second half, everything was still to play for. Mitchells tagged on 5 of the first 6 scores of the first half and when a goal left it 1-8 to 1-7 it seemed that the game would quickly peter out.

But these Ballymac men are nothing if not resilient, Great support play from Michael Herlihy, Adian Breen and Cian Counihan resulted in a scramble in the Mitchells square ending up as a goal, suddenly Ballymac were in the lead by two.

Now it was all to play for in the last ten minutes but a wonder goal by Alan O Donoghue for the visitors would ultimately seal the win, a shot into the top corner of the net giving Alan Bonn no chance. The final score 2-10 to 2-07.
