Our Senior Ladies Blue team prior to the Game V Beale on Thursday night, 17th June, in Ballybunion, as Ballymacelligott LGFA became only the second club in Kerry to enter two Senior Ladies sides in a competition.

Senior Team
Our senior team travelled to Dromid on Saturday night. The game was played with championship intensity.
In the first half Ballymac got off to a great start with a goal after three minutes. Twenty minutes into the second half and our lads still had the momentum and were in the lead 1-07 to 0-3. At half time Ballymacelligott lead 1-09 to 0-06.

In the second half Dromid came out determined to narrow the gap and they took their points well and half way through our lead had diminished to two points.
Dromid fought hard and despite the Ballymac team efforts the teams were even after 21 minutes. Dromid went on to win the game by two points 0-19 to 1-14.   Our next outing is to Templenoe in two weeks.

Minors: U17 Boys.
Our u 17s travelled to Moyvane last Monday night to take on the locals in Round 2 of the Lee Strand County League.
The locals started well and playing a direct style of football and had our boys on the back foot in the early stages. Moyvane led by 5 points to 2 points after 20 minutes. Both sides exchanged Goals before halftime but our boys seemed to have weathered the storm trailing by 3 points, with a score line of 1 -07 to 1- 04 at the interval. Skye Lynch’s point in the first half was without doubt the score of the half. Ballymac had missed some good point scoring opportunities, but Moyvane had played the better football in the first half .
An early Goal for Moyvane in the second half was a set back to our boys , but our boys replied soon after with a goal of our own from Gary Lynch .
Moyvane scored from the penalty spot but again Ballymac through Niall Collins had the ball in the opposition’s net 5 minutes later .
Further points from Moyvane put us under pressure, and as we headed for the last Quarter Moyvane were in control.
Gary Lynch scored his second goal on the night and then immediately after , Shane Gilroy was unlucky with his goal bound shot . Maurice O’Connell was unlucky to slip with his penalty, which the Moyvane goal keeper duly saved .
These misses were to prove costly on the night but fair play to Ballymac for giving it their all.
Thanks to Moyvane for a sporting game and thanks to all parents who travelled to support the team . Next up is Firies next Monday night and this important game is at home.

U 15 Blue Team Match Report

The Lee Strand County League Division 3A:  second round at home to Kenmare.

On Wednesday evening last we entertained a very strong Kenmare side in round 2 of the league. After ten minutes of the first half the scoreline was one to us and five to the travelling team. We had kicked some very bad wides in this period which would have kept us on terms.

Kenmare, just after the quarter hour mark  struck for a goal to leave us trailing by seven points. They went on to add another 2-02 before half time to really end the game as a contest. While they played with a sweeper to telling effect, and played some excellent football, it was their strength, pace and power that our boys could not match in central positions. At underage level this has a huge bearing on games. One would have to wonder should they be playing in a higher division. The second half played out with the Kenmare boys winning convincingly on a scoreline of 1-06 to 6-13.

Our boys host Churchill next Wednesday evening at in Ballymac @ 730pm.

U15 Gold Team Match Report

The Lee Strand County League Division 9A.

The boys made the trip to Killorglin Friday evening and put in a very steady performance against the locals. Leading at halftime by a point the boys showed great courage and tenacity throughout the first half.

With our goalie Luke Griffin very solid in goals he along with our six backs kept a very busy Laune Rangers forward line at bay time and again. Matthew Rodgers excelling throughout taking the game to the opposition ably assisted by the two boys in mid field Micheal O Connor and under 13 panelist Eoghan Joy. While we didn’t get the result we wanted the boys really tried hard all through the game.

Final score; Laune Rangers 4-06 Ballymac 3-02.

Team; Luke Griffin, Evan O Brien, Tom Long, William O Donoghue, Matthew Rodgers(0-1), Conor Martin, Cian Gilroy, Micheal O Connor(1-0), Eoghan Joy, Ciaran O Connell, Gearoid Healy, Sam Slattery(1-0), Maurice Harrington, Alex Riordan, Shane Brosnan, Jamie Burke(1-1f), Padraig Reidy.

U13 Ballymac Blue Team

Our u13 Boys team made the journey to Churchill on Sunday evening last for a Round 2 Co League game.

An Eoghan Joy point straight from the throw in saw us off to the ideal start but Churchill dominated the remainder of the quarter and led by four points at the first water break.

A goal and a point by Paddy Lucid brought us back into the game but Churchills ability to take their points saw them lead at half time 0-9 1-2.

A Sean Martin free and a good left footed point by Ray Horgan narrowed the gap in the second half but the home side maintained the gap to run out deserving winners on a 0-12 to 1-4 scoreline.

John Leen in goal performed well to keep a clean sheet while Graham West revelled in his new position at full back while Darragh Mc Mahon and Fionn Enright  also impressed in defence.

At midfield Eoghan Joy and Padraig Reidy put in a good shift, while up front Ryan Burke and Michael Quirke performed well.

Our next game sees us welcome Fossa to Ballymac on Sunday evening next.

Prior to the commencement of the game a minutes silence was observed in memory of Breda Sugrue Tylough,Kielduff a former Secretary of Ballymac Coiste na nÓg and a great supporter of Ballymac GAA for many years.

May she rest in peace.

U13 Gold team
Our U13 Gold team played An Ghaeltacht at home on Sunday night last. The boys played some lovely football and worked hard right through the game. One can see the improvement with every game and the boys really enjoying their football.

Ballymac U11 Boys Blue Team Match Report

2nd Game Phase 1 County Football Go Games 17th June

Our boys travelled to J.P Sullivan Park to play Laune Rangers on Thursday evening.

Conditions again were ideal for football with our boys playing into a breeze in the first half.

Laune Rangers started strongly aided by the breeze and notched up the first few scores and could have scored more only for some valiant defending by the likes of Eric Quirke, Gearoid Joy and in particular Harvey Leen who put in a storming performance at full back.  Jack Lynch in goals pulled of a string of saves throughout the game and his kickouts were impressive all night.

Adrian O’Connor covered every blade of grass in the first half, putting in a massive shift at midfield, ably assisted by Gearoid O’Connor and they both got some lovely passes into our forwards.

Patrick Leen had a shot saved and for the second game in a row, his partner up front, Tadhg O’Connor was on hand to finish the ball to the net. The first half finished with two wonderful points from play from Adrian O’Connor who had run himself to a standstill by halftime.   Our boys had by now overcome the slow start and were starting to dictate the game.

We have been using these games to give players opportunities to play in a variety of positions and we made a few changes at half time. Once such change saw Eric Quirke move to half forward and he took to the position like a duck to water, rattling off 3 quick points from play in the first 5 minutes. Others to excel in changed positions were Ciarán Brosnan and Gearoid O’Connor at half back.  The work rate and hunger displayed by all our players in the second half was a sight to behold. They dominated the second half and deservedly won the game on the night.  This team is showing real progress over the last few weeks and we look forward to our next game away to Kilcummin next Thursday.

Match Report Ballymac U11 Gold Team

Ballymac gold team travelled to Killorglin to play Laune Rangers in the second round of the County Go Games.  It was a brilliant evening for a game with just a slight breeze blowing across the pitch.

We had a full panel to pick from again and we knew that we would need to call on all of them during the game.

The game started at blistering pace with both defences on top with David Fealy and Rory O’ Connor to the fore with great tackles and block downs.

All the lads continued from last week’s game with their great work rate and honesty. Both teams were finding scores hard to come by but eventually Jack Hobbert stepped up with the first score of the game after he gathered a long pass from Flynn Boyle and popped it over the bar. This which was closely followed by two goals for Ballymac, the first by Darragh Lyons and the second by Finn Hannah. Even with a strong breeze blowing against us we played some fabulous long range foot passes which we used to great effect which our forwards used time and again to start attack after attack.

Finn Hannah scored a cracking goal to start the second half started again by great team work from our backs to get the ball cleared. Our forwards again were not to be over shadowed by the backs with some savage work rate continued from last week’s game with great work by Aidan O Connor, Jack Stack and Keelan Burke. Overall, it was a brilliant team performance with no weak links anywhere. We roll on to Kilcummin next Thursday night away.  Hopefully we can continue our great form. Once again, a special thanks to our great support that travelled last Thursday night.

Ladies News:

Senior Ladies

A momentous occasion occurred last Thursday night, 17th June, in Ballybunion, as Ballymacelligott LGFA became only the second club in Kerry to enter two Senior Ladies sides in a competition. Our Gold team play in Division Two of the North Kerry League on Monday nights and our Blue Team play in Division Three on Thursday/Friday nights. This is a huge achievement for our club and a huge thank you needs to go out to all our ladies, coaches and administrators over the last number of years since we were founded in 2012.

The night also marked the Senior Ladies debut of a number of our U16 players, Abby Leahy, Ciara Kerins, Ella Quirke and Orla O’Connor, congratulations girls and we hope to be seeing a lot more of you in the foreseeable future. Also making her debut on the night was newcomer Alyssa O’Sullivan.

As a game it was a tight affair, with our girls playing into a stiff Atlantic seaside breeze in the first half scoring 2-1 to 2-6 in favour of Beale. In the second half the effort of all the extra running into the breeze came against our ladies, who only had three replacements available to use, resulting in a final score line of 2-6 Ballymac to 4-9 of Beale. We had two scorers on the night, each notching up 1-3 apiece, Emma Sweeney and Ella Quirke.

A huge well done to the squad, mentors David Keane and Una Kerins and to our great traveling support.

Squad: Kerry Hennessy, Deirdre Millane, Abby Leahy, Alyssa O’Sullivan, Aileen Twomey, Chloe Gleeson, Ciara Kerins, Grainne Galvin, Lorna Daly, Ellie McElligott, Roisin Long, Ella Quirke, Kate O’Connor, Emer Curran, Veronica Heaslip, Emma Sweeney (Capt), Rachel Godley, Orla O’Connor.

U16

After a long wait our U16’s returned to competitive action, the groups last competitive game was on the 9th September last year in the U16 County League Division 1 Semi Final away to Southern Gaels in Caherciveen.

You would not think it was that long ago as we shot straight out of the starting blocks and took the game to Fossa, with a goal from Orla O’Connor. Fossa girls then fought back with first a point and then a goal. Showing great resilience our ladies immediately replied with a great move from the kick out resulted in a lovely point from play by impressive wing forward Rachel Creedon. With this, our girls took control with great pressing, passing and movement, as over the next four minutes we added a goal  (Ella Quirke) and three points (Laura Sugrue 2 (1 free) and Ella Quirke). Fossa responded with two points (1 free after a great save by Kerry Hennessy) to leave the score at the first water break 2-4 to 1-3. We did have two or three more goal attempts that were close, including one off the post and a point chance also that came back off the post.

The second quarter was a different story, as we allowed Fossa back into the game with some poor decision making and sloppy turnovers/poor movement. This put our defence under enormous pressure but Abby Leahy, Alice Brosnan, Anna Collins, Ciara Kerins, Kate Collins, Laura Kelly and Rachel Griffin fought really hard to keep Fossa at bay, keeping Fossa’s score to just 2-2 (1 goal coming from a penalty)in that quarter, when it could easily have been more. We scored just two points in that quarter (Rachel Griffin with an inspiring point from the left wing after good movement up from wing back and Laura Sugrue). The score at HT read Fossa 3-5, Ballymac 2-6.

Following some soul searching and revision of poor decision making, we started the second half with thunder in our boots, as we hit Fossa with three goals in three minutes (Roisin Rahilly with 2 goals and Ella Quirke with 1 in between) immediately after the resumption, to put Ballymac back in the ascendancy, which we would keep until the end of the game. With Roisin and the impressive Keelin Enright dominating the midfield, it looked good, but then injury struck again (we had lost Abby Leahy and Alice Brosnan to injuries in the first half from our defence) with our centre back Kate Collins, who was marshalling the pivot position like a general, going down with a foot injury. This required hard working wing forward Sarah Scanlon to drop back to centre back to take over and she rose greatly to the task. Emma Daly took the wing forward position. We added three more points over the third quarter (2 from Rachel Creedon, 1 a free and 1 from Laura Sugrue who put in an excellent game at full forward), while Fossa only added 2 more points to leave the score at the second water break, Ballymac 5-8 to Fossa’s 3-7.

As we entered the final quarter Alexa Weiss had entered the fray for the hard working Allie Tarrant at corner forward and Alexa put over two lovely points as well as another from Laura Sugrue and two more from Ella Quirke. Niamh Lynch had come on for Orla at corner forward and Aoife Sweeney had replaced Laura Sugrue at full forward with both girls involved in our final couple of scores. Fossa now were pushing hard for goals but with the fresh legs of Sarah Mason and Roisin Ragget in our backline we held firm, allowing only three more points in total over the final quarter.

Well done to all our girls on the panel and we hope to have Ciara Palmer and Aoibhenn Broderick who missed the game with injuries back soon.

The Fossa game was a big step up from our challenge games and next Tuesday night at home, will be another big step up, Southern Gaels, which I am sure that our girls are really looking forward to taking on.

U14
Ballymac U14 girls played Kilcummin at home at 4pm on Sunday evening 13th June. We conceded 2 early goals before settling into the game and the score at the first water break was 2-2 to 0-2.

Ballymac were always in the game and in the last quarter we managed to get the margin back to one goal but as we pressed for another score Kilcummin countered and scored the best goal of the night and put a halt to the Ballymac comeback. Our girls did very well on a very hot evening without the luxury of any substitutes and never gave up.

The final score was Kilcummin 4-5 Ballymac 2-5. Our scorers on the night were Aishlinn, Anna, Emma and Katie.

Ballymac U14 girls travelled to Kenmare on Sunday 20th June and were in the lead 2-04 to 1-04 at the first water break.  At half time Kenmare had the upper hand and were in the lead 4-04 to 2-06. The final score was Ballymac 2-13 to Kenmare 6-13.

Overall while Ballymac did not win the game this was still a great performance with 15 scores by Ballymac. Well done to all the  players.

U9

Sunday 20th of June saw the biggest turn out for training this year do far. 27 girls attended training for our 9 year old and under group.

Sympathy
It was with great sadness that we heard of the death of Breda Sugrue, Tylough. We extend our deepest sympathies to Eimear, Tadhg, Brian and Eoin and all the Sugrue and Clifford families.
Breda served as our Coiste na nÓg Secretary for many years.  In times before computerisation, she was an amazing and diligent servant to our club. She had a remarkable knowledge of football.
She knew all the players and followed their lives with great interest.
Simply knowing Breda and spending time working with her in our club was an honour.
Her sons Tadhg, Brian and Eoin all played with our Club from underage to senior.
May Breda rest in peace.
