(click to enlarge) The map of Westeros in Game Of Thrones as it normally looks. But turn it upside down…

OK, you’ve probably seen this before, but it’s interesting to see where the creator of ‘Game Of Thrones’ got his inspiration for drawing the map of the fictional land of Westeros and where Kerry features in it.

The world’s biggest TV show returns tonight to Sky Atlantic so we thought we’d have a look at the map of Westeros which is apparently just England, Scotland and Wales plopped on top of an upside down Ireland.

A cursory glance at the map (above right) might not look familiar, but something very interesting happens when you turn it upside down and concentrate on the south half of Westeros.

As you can see it’s pretty much the map of Ireland (apart from the elongated Donegal part) with Kerry especially detailed. Kerry is in the ‘Vale of Arryn’ and Killarney has been renamed ‘The Eyrie’, an ancient castle and seat of House Arryn. So it’s the capital, like Killarney folk have always wanted!

‘Bloody Gate’ looks to be located in Brosna, while the folks of ‘Wickenden’ dwell in Tarbert. Out west – which looks uncannily like the Dingle Peninsula – Castlegregory becomes ‘Gulltown’, the major port city of the Vale of Arryn, while Dingle looks to be ‘Runestone’.

No sign of anything in Tralee though. We’ll have to play closer attention to the goings-on in the Vale Of Arryn as Season 6 progresses.
