IT’S taken a while, but the people of Blennerville have their Grotto lighting at night again this week after four years in the dark.

The Grotto has been there over 60 years after it was built adjacent to the old school. But when the school was demolished in January 2016, the Council also turned out the lights on the Virgin Mary, much to the chagrin of locals.

“Believe me, it came up a lot on the doorstep when I was canvassing around here for the local elections earlier this year…from both young and old,” said Cllr Terry O’Brien, when we met him at the Grotto on Thursday.

Cllr Terry O’Brien brought the issue up at a Tralee Municipal District meeting in the autumn and he used his own Councillors allocations to fund the new light.

Solar panels were installed by Monavalley-based Prodomo Ireland on the roof of the grotto and when it gets to a certain level of darkness, the LED light comes on, so it won’t be in the dark again.
