A LOCAL councillor believes trading licences should be granted for businesses to operate on or near the Tralee-Fenit Greenway.

At the meeting of Tralee Municipal District of Kerry County Council on Monday, Sinn Féin’s Cllr. Cathal Foley asked had there been any progress on the provision of licenses for trading on the Greenway.

In reply, Council Management said Tralee MD’s Casual Trading Bye Laws do not facilitate trading from the Fenit Trailhead.

While such provisions may be considered in the future, the Council said it is keen for indigenous businesses and rates payers to have the opportunity to respond to the growth in visitor numbers resulting from the opening of the Tralee to Fenit Greenway.

Cllr Foley said he has been contacted by many people using the Greenway asking why they can’t get a cup of coffee from a unit on the Greenway.

He said while he supports the logic of supporting local, existing businesses, they simply aren’t there on site. Cllr Foley asked that the Council look at the issue again and address it.
