SINN Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly TD, has urged the government to examine the purchase of lands at the Conor Pass, which have been put up for sale.

Encompassing almost 1,400-acres, the land includes a mix of forestry, lowland, mountain grazing lands, and three lakes and has an overall guide price of around €10 million.

“The lands are an area of outstanding natural beauty and constitute an important aspect of landscape within Corca Dhuibhne,” said Deputy Daly.

“I have been contacted by a number of people who are keen for the State to tale steps to secure the position of the lands, which consists of three lakes, significant forestry, agricultural and mountain grazing, along with a number of waterfalls,” he said.

“The lands around the Caragh Lake have also been raised as a concern in relation to rights of way, and the state should consider action there also.

“The concerns of those contacting me centre on opportunities to build sustainable tourism, protect rights of way, rewild the area and improve biodiversity. I fully agree that the purchase of these lands could represent an important step in furthering these objectives.

“Accordingly, I will write to the Ministers responsible, Darragh O’Brien as Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, and Catherine Martin as Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, and ask that they engage with the local community. There is a historic chance to get this right, and the Green Party especially must make good on their commitments to protecting heritage and the environment,” concluded Deputy Daly.
