FORMER All-Star, Tom O’Sullivan, proved he is equally adept at catching burglars on Kerry streets as he is at stopping corner forwards running riot round Croke Park.

The Garda, based in Listowel, is being hailed a hero after he chased three burglars trying to gain entry to a house in the North Kerry town, resulting in the five time All-Ireland winner being threatened with hurleys, while he tried to arrest one of the men, a report in The Kerryman stated.

In broad daylight last Thursday morning, raiders, attempted to gain entry to a house in Listowel. After the alarm was raised, Garda O’Sullivan was the first on the scene.

The Rathmore man gave chase after the three by vaulting a back wall and pursuing the burglars down John B Keane Road, where a black Audi A3 with tinted windows waited for the men.

While the car was about to take off, Garda O’Sullivan, managed to grab one of the burglars and attempted to arrest him. While this was going on, the other men rounded on him with hurleys and Garda O’Sullivan, forcing him to let one of the burglars go.

The criminals than sped off down Tarbert Road, where they managed to give evade the Gardaí.

All was not lost however. The Rathmore native, who has just recently returned to football action with his club, managed to grab one of the hurleys used in the burglary. This piece of evidence has been sent to be forensically examined and could prove vital in the future.

Gardaí, believe the perpetrators are members of a gang from somewhere around the Dublin area and operate in a number of Munster counties.
