Labour candidate Ben Slimm.

A CANDIDATE in the upcoming local elections has expressed concern about vehicles parking on the footpath in Ardfert village at certain times during the day.

Ben Slimm, who is running for the Labour Party in the Tralee Municipal District local elections in May, said he has been contacted by residents who are concerned there could be an accident on the main road.

“There is no pedestrian crossing in the entire village and parking is a huge issue leading to people parking irresponsibly. I think the council need to urgently look at the situation and introduce some measures. A resident summed it up to me by saying ‘if a proper plan was in place a lot of people in Ardfert could walk around the village or even walk their kids to school which would reduce congestion. However as it is, you’d be too nervous to go out without the car’,” said Mr Slimm.

With a new residential development due to start in the village soon, Mr Slimm says the Council needs to have a plan to provide a proper standard services for the people of Ardfert in terms of water quality and traffic management.

“People are out of pocket having to buy filters to deal with the lime in the water. Maybe they should be subsidised in some way for this,” he added.

He will be calling on the county council to assess the situation urgently and put in emergency measures before a long term solution is found.
