THE staging of plays in the Ballymac Bar in Tralee over the past six months has generated funding for local organisations who help people with dementia and the homeless.

Tralee native Frank Houlihan, of Hybreasal Productions, decided to do something different to attract theatre lovers to the pub, so, with the help of local amateur actors, he staged successful evenings of John B Keane plays before Christmas and in April ‘Much Ado About The Bard’ featured two plays inspired by the work of Shakespeare.

The evenings were enjoyed by all and on Wednesday, Frank and Pat Creagh of The Ballymac Bar presented cheques of €2oo the Rosemary Day Care Centre for people with Alzheimers/dementia and €150 to Knocklee House, which caters for homeless people. The Peter McVerry Trust also received €50.

Frank said the two facilities did amazing work and they were delighted to help out in any way. Meanwhile, Frank plans to stage one of his own plays — which he described as “a crazy, absurd Kerry comedy” — at the Ballymac Bar on July 25.
