IN my opinion, serum is the most important part of your skincare because it penetrates the dermis deeper than another part of your skincare and it will make all your other skincare more effective.

If you are contemplating adding a serum to your skincare regime ask yourself what your main skin concern is and then find the complementary serum to suit your skin.

I highly recommend having your skin professionally analysed first so that you can choose the correct serum to suit your skin’s needs.

CH Opticians 600x400You can have this done at most large pharmacies or by your regular beauty therapist. In terms of how to and when to apply your serum here is my advice: cleanse and tone as usual.

Then apply a very small amount of serum, approximately enough to cover the top of your middle finger, as a little goes a long way.

Tap your serum gently onto your skin and allow to soak in for about two to three minutes, then apply your moisturiser. Apply morning and evening.

Here are details on a selection of serums that I have tried myself along with a synopsis of their main claims, the prices you can expect to pay and where you can find them.

Clarins Double Serum

Clarins Double Serum – I trialled this before it was officially launched and found a dramatic difference in my skin. Excellent for fine lines and the overall tone of my skin was much improved. It’s an anti-ageing serum. Suggest using it once you’ve reached the tender age of 30! €69.50 for 30mls … available from all Clarins stockists and some pharmacies egBoots Ireland

Vichy Idealia Life Serum

Vichy Idealia Serum…if pigmentation is your skin issue Idealia is ideal. It has a lovely texture and consistency. It will also give a nice shimmer to your skin. It is ideal for reducing pigmentation and the less pigmentation on your skin the more youthful you will look.

RRP €38.50 available in a wide selection of pharmacies.

Shiseido Ireland White Lucency

For me this is the creme de la creme of serums when it comes to treating pigmentation. Years of research has gone into developing Shiseido’s White Lucency.

The melanocites – which produce the melanin in the skin and therefore the pigmentation – are targeted by this Shiseido formula which is extremely effective.
