“While Kerry Group has obligations to their shareholders, they have a moral obligation to the people of Ukraine who are suffering at the hands of the Putin regime. Hundreds of men, women and children have lost their lives and millions more have lost their homes and livelihoods. Many more face death and destruction in the coming weeks.”

“Many international companies have already signified their intentions to leave Russia, Kerry Group should be no different,” he added.

“Tralee and Kerry residents will need to open their homes and hearts to refugees fleeing the violence. We should never forget that previous generations of Irish people left this island in rags, many are now leaving Ukraine having lost everything due to the actions of the Russian army. Tralee and Kerry must be ready to play our part.”

PHOTOS/REPORT: Warriors Edge Local Derby To Stay In Pole Position For Home Quarter-Final

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors took another step towards securing a home league quarter final playoff with a 74-65 win over Team 360 Financial Killorglin at the Killorglin Sports Complex on Saturday night.

Allied to C&S Neptune’s defeat to Tradehouse Central Ballincollig in Cork, it leaves the Warriors in prime position to host a quarter final playoff on the weekend of the 19th/20th of March

The Warriors stormed into the contest to immediately seize the initiative and build a sizable 15-2 lead by the midway point in the quarter.

Continued below…

.

Scores from Eoin Quigley, Nikola Roso, Daniel Jokubaitis and stunning three from Aaron Calixte powered the Warriors ahead with Killorglin’s token resistance a single score from point guard Allan Thomas.

The home side did struggle to get shots to land but managed to eat into the Warriors lead when Simon Francis, Xabier Arriaga and Isa Brandon combined to cut the gap back to single figures but back-to-back baskets from Ron Elksnis saw the Warriors lead 19-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The Warriors offensive effort stepped up a notch in the second and scores from Roso and Calixte edged the visitors further ahead.

Continued below…

.

Killorglin’s defensive indiscipline was also punished with 6 from 8 from free throws and the Warriors advantage was out to 29-13. The game quickly turned into a shootout with both sides firing in threes that had the sizable crowd in full voice.

Photo: Liam Ryan

Roso and Calixte both fired in from outside the arc before Arriaga replied by launching two identical quality efforts from either side of the court.

Darragh O’Hanlon had the final say in the quarter as he knocked down a buzzer beating three from well beyond the line to give Warriors a 40-25 lead at the long break.

The Warriors continued to hold their local rivals at arm’s length when they increased their lead early in the third after Roso dropped in an effort from close range.

Two in a row from Arriaga who was busy throughout and a three from Liam Croke kept Killorglin in the game but O’Hanlon’s second three before a double from distance from Jokubaitis put 21 points between the sides at the midway point.

Photo: Liam Ryan

Warriors foul trouble allowed Killorglin to chip away at the lead with Eoghan O’Sullivan and Simon Francis in particular profiting, but a quick double from Quigley and a basket each from Roso and Brandon Cotton saw the visitors bring a 61-45 lead down the stretch.

The vocal home crowd called for a final push early in the fourth quarter and their team duly obliged with Shane O’Connell and Francis cutting the gap to 12.

A pull up two from Calixte and another arced effort from Jokubaitis looked to have restored order but Killorglin took off on a run that saw them shoot their way right back into the contest.

Photo: Liam Ryan

Arriaga and player coach Declan Wall lifted the home crowd with two big threes and when Allan Thomas returned three from three from the free throw line and followed that up with another fast break score after Francis had batted in a rebound, the hosts had cut the Warriors lead to 66-62 with two minutes on the clock.

However, just when a shock result looked likely, former Killorglin star Daniel Jokubaitis delivered two killer scores with identical threes to seal the win and bring the Warriors fans to their feet. Aaron Calixte’s two from two from the line late on added a little shine to the final scoreline of 74-65.

Top scorers:

Team 360 Financial Killorglin: Xavier Arriaga 17, Allan Thomas 10, Simon Francis 10

Garvey’s Tralee Warriors: Aaron Calixte 22, Nikola Roso 14 Daniel Jokubaitis 14

• Next up for the Garvey’s Tralee Warriors is the final game of the regulation League season when they face a trip to Neptune Stadium to face C&S Neptune, the side they defeated to claim the Pat Duffy National Cup in Dublin in January on Saturday evening with tip off at 6.30pm.

Know Your Rights: Leaving Your Job

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

Question:  How much notice should I give when I leave a job?

Answer: Generally, your contract will state the amount of notice you need to give when you are leaving a job. If it does not, then you must give at least one week’s notice.

What about my annual leave?

Your employer must pay you for any days you have not taken.

Continued below…

.

Does my employer have to give me a reference?

No, not legally – unless it is specifically stated in your contract (but most contracts of employment do not include the right to a reference when you leave). However, if your employer does give references for some employees then they should do it for all employees, without discrimination.

My reference was unfair and I didn’t get the job because of this.

If you believe your reference was unfair and caused you loss, you may be able to sue your former employer for negligence. However, you must be able to prove that the reference caused you a loss – for example, that your job offer was withdrawn as a result.

Sponsored: You’ll Be Astounded By The Effects Of Retinol On Your Skin

.

Mary O’Donnell of the Cosmetic and Hair Restoration Centre at the Bon Secours in Tralee on the benefits of Retinol…

Retinol is a real buzzword when it comes to skincare.

When recommended after a skin consultation and used correctly with the right products, you will be astounded by the results. It encourages aged skin cells to behave in a more youthful manner.

It also refines the skin and enhances the skin radiance. It is a derivative of Vitamin A, the group of fat-soluble vitamins found in carrots, eggs and sweet potatoes. It stimulates Collagen, increases cell turnover and creating smoother and more even toned skin.

It can also inhibit pigmentation which can be very ageing on the skin. Retinol also reduces fine lines, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. Acne skin also benefits from its use by working on cell turnover and unclogging pores.

It regulates oily skin and minimises breakouts. In the CHRC we stock Alumier – a medical grade skincare that offers many products containing retinol.

Starting with retinol resurfacing serums, they come in 3 strengths. So that we can start getting the skin used to actives and build up  gradually.

The retinol is encapsulated which allows a slow release into the skin overnight. This encapsulation minimises side effects so you can enjoy the benefits without irritation.

The retinol eye works on fine lines and wrinkles and puffiness. It also increase firmness and elasticity (72.50). My favourite is the neck and dećolleté firming cream.

Containing 0.25% of encapsulated retinol for the fine lines and wrinkles on the neck area (84.50). Always use SPF daily after using any retinol products.

Finnegan On Film: Comedy And Drama On The Box This Weekend

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, says there’s a strong historical and nostalgic view to this weekend’s films…

There might be some readers who can wax nostalgically about the Flinstones, a television cartoon series about prehistoric families who lived in a world similar to our own, but with dinosaur themes and approaches.

The Croods (Saturday 6.35 RTE1) also covers the adventures of an animated prehistoric family.

Continued below…

.

The family dynamics are familiar with Grug (Nicolas Cage), his wife Ugga (Catherine Keener), his mother in law Gran (Cloris Leachman) and teenagers Thunk (Clark Duke), Eep (Emma Stone) and Baby.

The family that slays together eats together. Otherwise they stay in a cave, because outside the cave is Danger and Grug does not like change or chance.  However, the teenagers don’t agree and want to see what is out there.

Among the new ideas are shoes, tools and “baby suns” (fire) from a stranger called Guy (Ryan Reynolds).

When their cave is destroyed, the family must head out into the unknown and learn that new is not necessarily bad, and that it is important to help and protect each other.

Ghostbusters (Saturday 9.00pm RTE2) is a remake/reboot of the popular series of films with an all female cast.

When a series of unexplained supernatural events happen in New York City, a team of experts combine to get to the bottom of the reasons.

Dr Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) and Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) are estranged friends and paranormal experts.

Dr Jillian “Holtz” Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) has designed a number of ghost hunting gadgets and Patty Nolan (Leslie Jones) is a public transport worker whose knowledge of the City, protective equipment and the iconic hearse transport form the aptly named Ghostbusters team.

With cameo appearances from the stars of the original film such as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Chris Hemsworth as the eye candy receptionist Kevin, this is a film that has a bad reputation as a financial flop, but will raise a great big grin on your face – I hope they show the end credits pieces.

Perhaps the film most associated with Kerry film making is Ryan’s Daughter (Saturday 9.50 TG4), filmed in various locations notably the Dingle Peninsula, Banna and South Africa.

Based on Madam Bovary, and set during the First World War, a woman married to an Irish village schoolmaster, has an affair with a British Army Officer.

When discovered, she is falsely accused of informing on local Republican activists. This prompts the villagers to inflict their own punishment on the woman.

Staring Sarah Miles, Robert Mitchim, John Mills (in an Oscar winning performance), Trevor Howard, Leo McKern and Christopher Jones, directed by David Lean, a screenplay by Robert Bolt and simply wonderful Oscar winning cinematography by Freddie Young, the stories behind the filming are almost as dramatic as the story in front of the camera. Enjoy and stay safe.

A NEW school building for Tralee Educate Together National School has finally been agreed in principle between the Department of Education and Kerry County Council to be located at Lohercannon, Tralee.

The school will be located close to the new estate, Cluain Lár, which is currently under construction.

Staff, parents, pupils and the Board of Management are delighted with the news that they will be permanently accommodated in a school that will facilitate building on the educational opportunities that Educate Together offers.

Continued below…

.

The Department of Education has also announced that Kerry ETB will oversee the deliver of the new school.

Although the school has been in temporary accommodation for the past 20 years and is one of only two Educate Together National Schools in the country that is not permanently housed, it has been a great success, attracting pupils from throughout the county.

The school follows the national Primary School Curriculum and also offers an ethical education curriculum. The Educate Together ethos is founded on the following four principles: child-centred; democratically run; equality based and co-educational.

Now that the site for the new school has been selected by the Department of Education at Lohercannon and the announcement that Kerry ETB will oversee the project,  the school community is anxious that their new school be constructed as soon as possible and are calling on the Minister for Education Norma Foley and all the county’s TDs to ensure that the school is constructed as soon as possible.

Kerry County Councillors must now vote on allowing the parcel of land to be used for a new school and this will come before a full council meeting in the coming months.

Minister Foley said: “Agreement in principle has been reached with Kerry Co Council regarding the acquisition of a 2-acre site at Lohercannon, Tralee. The acquisition is subject to valuation, contract and the agreement of the Elected Members of Kerry County Council.

“As has been the case with a number of key building projects in the county the Department has finalised the brief for this school building project and Kerry ETB has agreed to deliver this project.  The Department will be engaging further with the school and the ETB shortly to progress this project into the architectural planning process as a priority.

“This is positive news for the Tralee ET school community who have for so long have been waiting for a new school. I look forward to this project developing at pace.”

Principal, Mary Brosnan said; “We are delighted with the news and would like to thank Minister Foley, the Department of Education and Kerry County Council. Our pupils and staff deserve proper, purpose-built accommodation.

Chairperson of the Board of Management of Tralee Educate Together, Sinead Kelleher has also thanked Minister Foley and the relevant parties that have helped ensure that a site is now available for a brand-new state of the art school.  She has also welcomed the news that Kerry ETB will deliver the project.

“We are thrilled with the news that we now have a site, and we now want the new school build to proceed as soon as possible. We have spent years in rented substandard accommodation and staff and pupils deserve a proper new school. We are looking forward to working with everyone to bring our dream to fruition,” said Sinead.

OVER 1o years since Skelper Quanes started their Cheltenham Preview events, last night’s was by far the biggest and most successful ever, with thousands raised for a great cause.

Thanks to Tom Quane adding on an extension to the premises in Blennerville during the COVID pandemic, they could accommodate well over 300 people at the sold-out event which saw a star-studded line-up of experts give their choices for the upcoming festival.

A special guest on the night was little Rose O’Flaherty from Ballymacelligott, who has a rare and serious genetic neuromuscular condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), Type 1, and funds raised from the event went to the Help Rose Bloom campaign.

There were also amazing spot prizes and a super auction of items like golf with Darragh and Tomás Ó Sé; golf with ‘Bomber and Ogie’; autographed riding breeches from Rachel Blackmore; an autographed Ireland rugby jersey and two nights for two people at the Skellig Hotel.

While the total amount has not yet been revealed, the generosity of those present saw thousands raised for Rose’s plight.

Both the O’Flaherty family and Tom Quane expressed their gratitude to all the sponsors, the panel who gave their time and of course all who attended and donated money to make it a memorable night. Scroll down for photos…

The group went about creating a joyful experience for visitors to the museum and this is a very great achievement for them. We, at Kerry ETB are delighted that so many people got involved and supported this project,” stated Ann O’Dwyer, Director of Schools, Youth and Music at Kerry ETB.

BA Food Business Innovation students at the MTU Kerry Campus partook in the Rare Disease Ireland #RaiseAToastie campaign to support and raise awareness of the 300,000 people living in Ireland with a Rare Disease on International Rare Disease Day.

For the annual awareness campaign Rare Disease Ireland encouraged people across Ireland to support in two fun ways – #RaiseAToastie & #LightUp4RD.

Students created low protein ‘toasties’ in recognition of people with rare conditions who adhere to a strict low protein dietary therapy (“diet for life”) from birth whereby 85% normal foods are not permitted to prevent devastating health consequences. These conditions include PKU, HCU, MSUD, GA1 and Tyrosinemia.

Continued below…

.

Bernadette Gilroy, a lecturer at MTU who is also the Chairperson of the PKU Association and a member of the National Rare Disease Taskforce said; “A sincere thank you to the staff and students for raising awareness of restricted low protein dietary therapy. Lack of awareness amongst the food and restaurant industry directly affects a person’s ability to adhere to dietary therapy to help manage their condition as well as having an impact on their mental health and quality of life. The community often encounter difficulties eating out and raising awareness particularly amongst the food industry has been highlighted as a priority by our members”.

MTU Kerry campus also supported the #LightUp4RD, by illuminating the North Campus, acknowledging their support for students and staff who are affected by a rare disease as well as the community members who they engage with in research and teaching.

Local Media Organisations Invite Public To Go Blue And Yellow This Friday For Ukraine

.

LOCAL media organisations are inviting the people of Kerry and beyond to come together to make their voices heard in a show of support for the Ukrainian people.

Kerry’s Eye and The Kerryman will partner with Radio Kerry on the initiative and are asking people to don blue and yellow colours for a Day of Support for the people of Ukraine.

It can be a simple hand drawn flag, some coloured balloons, changing their social media posts or whatever people wish.

Continued below…

.

Individuals or groups displaying the Ukrainian colours or organising events can contact ukraine@radiokerry.ie and Radio Kerry will help to share them.

Radio Kerry General Manager, Fiona Stack said the Day of Support is in response to the many listeners who are contacting the station wishing to express their concern at events in Ukraine, the plight and courage of Ukrainian people and looking for ways to help and support them in any way possible.

Ms Stack says; “We are lucky enough to live in a democracy where people can have their say. In previous years we have held a County Colours Day when the Kerry team have been taking part in All Irelands so this Friday people throughout the Kingdom and beyond will be invited to do the same but this time displaying the colours of the Ukrainian flag in their homes, schools and businesses”.

Both Kerry’s Eye and The Kerryman newspapers will this week publish a special supplement including a coloured pull out of the Ukrainian flag which people can display should they wish.

Tralee Printing have generously given their time and expertise to assist with the insert. Other media organisations and local photographers have also pledged their support.

“It’s no longer just Governments that can express a view, in the modern world of mass media ordinary people have multiple ways to have their voices heard too and the media organisations in Kerry wanted to come together to provide a forum for those voices. We don’t believe a single county in the west of Ireland has the power to change Mr Putin’s views, but maybe enough ordinary people around the world speaking up can influence other ordinary people to say – not in our name,” said Ms Stack.

The media organisations will share details of the Red Cross and the UNHCR donation lines, as well as the locations of various events and collections points that are being organised throughout Kerry.

They will speak with Ukrainians living in Kerry. Even though it is only a small thing it will hopefully make them and their families back at home aware of the support of the people of Kerry.

Radio Kerry will share the messages on its social media channels on the day and will attempt to forward them to a sister radio station in Ukraine.
