REPORT: Kerry Win Munster Minor A Championship

Cork 0-13

Kerry 3-10

Kerry are Munster Minor A Champions following a deserving and thrilling win in Mallow on Sunday.

While the pitch was in excellent condition heavy rain prior to throw in made handling conditions difficult for both sides. Kerry went into the game minus a couple of key players and possible went in as underdogs.

Cork had a large contingent of last years minor panel available to them and they started the brightest with a point in the third minute. Mary Kate Smith responded for the Kingdom as both sides played positive football despite the conditions.

As the sides kept exchanging scorers Kerry were possibly guilty early on of going for goal when a point was possibly the better option. But this didn’t knock their confidence. In fact they grew into the game and began to dominate it more as it wore on.

Katie Doe with her first point of the afternoon midway through the first half saw Kerry back in the lead. Two minutes later Kerry had their first goal.

Katie Doe from the penalty spot after referee Patrick Smith judged Cork to have committed a foot block. Kerry now had a four-point lead.

Cork reduced the deficit with a pointed free from Eabha Donovan but what was to follow was a Kerry goal that surprised everyone.

Kelly Enright’s long ball deceiving the Kerry forwards and Cork backs bouncing in front of Cork keeper Andrea Toye who taught it was going over for a point and ended up in the back of the net.

It opened up a six-point lead and it was no more than Kerry deserved as they were the more dominant team for large parts of the first half limiting Cork to just three points from play in the first half.

Kerry added a further three points to open up an eight-point lead at the break. Cork had the advantage of the wind in the second half and were playing into the scoring end of Mallow.

They started the brightest of the two with a Maebh Collins point to reduce the deficit. Kerry was still playing with the same intensity as they had in the first but it was Cork who looked like threating for a goal.

Their first opportunity came four minutes in but Béibhinn Nic an tSithigh pulled off a magnificent save to keep them at bay. The sides exchanged points before Cork had shot number two at goal but Béibhinn Nic an tSithigh was at her best once again to keep them at bay.

Leah McMahon & Eabha O’Donovan exchanged frees as the gap remained at eight points. Mid way through the second half Kerry got their third goal of the game.

Amy Curtin who was back from injury and made a substitute appearance in the win against Clare was making her first start on Sunday rifled home to the top corner of the net to the delight of the Kerry supporters in the stand.

Kerry was now firmly in control and a lead they truly deserved. Cork as you would expect kept throwing everything at Kerry and were tapping over the scores.

Kerry’s goal was to be their last score of the game but that is not to take away from some of the excellent defending and work rate displayed by everyone of the Kerry players for the remainder of the match and indeed throughout the match.

Anna Collins leading by example showing great leadership in the final quarter when Cork kept pressing for that goal in the hope of igniting a late comeback. Cork kept the scoreboard ticking over with points from Eabha O’Donovan and Ava McAuliffe.

In the dying moments Cork had one last attack on the Kerry goal but Béibhinn Nic an tSithigh was once again alert to the danger and keep her clean sheet intact.

Shortly after referee Patrick Smith blew the fulltime whistle to the delight to the Kerry supporter, players and management. Kerry now go forward to the All Ireland Semi Final on Thursday 11th July. Details TBC.

Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Club News

.

Seniors:

Ráthbeg was our destination on Sunday to take on the locals in round 5 of county league division 1.

There were some changes to our starting XV when both Ben Hanafin and Jack Savage were included from the outset but this boost was somewhat mitigated by the losses of the suspended Jake Foley and the injured Shane McElligott – additionally, Con Barrett was unable to line out due to an injury sustained in training during the week.

We faced the elements in the first half and found ourselves a goal down after just 3 minutes – this was after báideoir Rob O’Connor had twice thwarted the efforts of the opposition when winning both of his one on one duels with his opponents – Rathmore quickly added a pointed free before we opened our account, when the marauding Ben Hanafin, after some good combination play, fisted over.

Rathmore were on top around the middle through the good work of their captain, Brendan O’Keeffe and he had plenty of  support from his half back line of Alan Dineen, Dan Murphy and Fionn Holohan.

Our resistance came mostly from our half back line of Ben Hanafin, TJ Heaphy and Daniel Bowler – Ben attacked at every opportunity and Daniel was strong and solid on the ball.

We settled well and with Darragh O’Connor and Gearóid Savage both dangerous we had cut the deficit to 2 points by the 19th minute, 1-04 to 0-05 following some good scores from Ben, Jack and Darragh – Tom Hoare, now more prominent got in the act too kicking a super score into the breeze.

However, we had now lost Darragh McElligott to injury to be replaced by Ryan ” Chucky ” Carroll and shortly afterwards, Rathmore plundered a goal which they followed with 3 points to our solitary score from Gearóid Savage.

We retired to the dressing rooms at half time, 2-07 to 0-06 in arrears but with the wind and rain at our backs in the 2nd half.

On the resumption, we introduced Conor Hayes but Rathmore continued to force the issue and led by 2-10 to 0-08 after 14 mins, our scores coming from two Darragh O’Connor frees; however, we were now beginning to build momentum with Tom Hoare  more prominent, Jack a constant outlet upfront and Barry John winning lots of possession – he was regularly fouled however, but despite this, he kicked two massive points from play and as the game entered its final minutes we were now just five adrift, 2-11 to 0-12 but on top in most sectors.

The 27th minute was pivotal – Jack floated a lovely ball into Darragh and though evading his marker, his low shot was foiled with the resultant ” 45″ sailing wide.

However, we continued to drive forward with the excellent Barry John and Daniel Bowler refusing to buckle and followed with another two points as Darragh and Jack found their range – the last word however was to be with the homesters, as a close in free, was deemed to have dissected the posts despite most spectators being of a different opinion.

Final score: Rathmore 2-12

KO’R         0-15

Round 6 will see Spa come to Strand Road on Sat night next for a 7 pm throw-in.

Team: Robert O’Connor, Darragh McElligott, Ross O’Callaghan, Stephen Nix, Ben Hanafin, TJ Heaphy, Daniel Bowler, Tom Hoare, Barry John Keane, Padraig Griffin, Jack Savage, Gearóid Dillane, Gearóid Savage, Sam McCarthy, Darragh O’Connor.

Subs: Ryan Carroll, Conor Hayes, Conor O’Sullivan.

Division 6A:

We made the trip to Keel on Friday night for a game with the locals and came out on the wrong side of a 1-11 to 2-06 scoreline. We were light on numbers due to the senior game on Sunday with the game being played at 13 a side.

A home fixture vs Legion is next up with a fixture yet to be confirmed.

We would like to wish Tomás Kennedy, Ben Hanafin and Darragh O’Connor all the best on Wednesday night next, 1st May as Kerry play Cork in the Munster U20 football final in Austin Stack Park – throw-in is @ 7.30 pm.

We’re looking forward to getting back to St Pats Astroturf next week for our Academy at 10.30am.

U7

Great numbers today for an early morning start in MTU. The skills are really improving with all the lads where we focused on handpassing today. Well, done to Colin who was our player of the week.

U8 Girls

We had a great session we worked on our hook kicking and the girls have obviously been practicing very hard as we finished off with a very competitive game where some of the points and goals wouldn’t have been out of place in Croke park.

U9 Boys

Our U9’s had a great week this week with a trip back To Castlegregory for another round of Go Games on Tuesday evening. We had 3 teams playing and they all had 4 great games. Then on Sunday morning they were back to Academy training where they had another fun session. Their skills are improving every week, and we ask them to practice their skills at home every day during the week.

U10 Girls

Another great turnout for an early morning session this morning, great to see all the girls showing great enthusiasm, skill and having fun. Today we focused on a new skill, the hook shot/pass and the girls did very well for their first time trying and their shooting skills were off the charts.

This week’s player of the week was Cara, who showed great skill and enthusiasm as she does every week. Well, done Cara. Just a quick reminder that we will be back training on the pitch in Blennerville next week and I will forward on details during the week. See you all next week girls! Regards Coaches

Well, done to our U12 girls who played very well in an exciting game in Blennerville this evening against Churchill’s Black team. The girls showed further improvement from last week’s game and finished very strong in the final quarter for the second week in a row. Special mention to U10 player Emily who played her first game for the u12’s and was fantastic.

Thanks to Churchill GAA for a sporting game, to the parents for coming to cheer on the girls and to referee Dell White for officiating.

We play Austin Stacks in the final group game of the North Kerry U12 Go Games group stage in two weeks’ time. The girls also had a productive training session up at the MTU last Sunday. The theme of the session was kicking where we worked on the skill itself in small groups and then in a game setting which the girls really enjoyed. Keep up the practice at home girls!

U13

We had our final game in phase one of the County league last Sunday evening in Blennerville. It was a late kick off on a cold evening and our boys got off to a slow start. We were up against a big, fast Scartaglin side.

Unfortunately, we were very subdued, and could not get up to the pace of the game, allowing Scartaglin to build a lot of scores in the first half. We regrouped at half time and challenged the boys to do better.

To their credit they responded well and competed much better in the second half, won a lot more contests and got some good scores. We won the second half, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap and Scartaglin had a well-deserved win. Thanks to Scartaglin for playing the game in a sporting manner. We are back training at 6pm Monday night.

U17

Our U17 came away with a win against Ardfert last Monday night. Their next game takes place away on Monday Night at 5pm against An Gaeltacht in An Gaeltacht.

Senior

St Pats winning streak comes to an end. There was great teamwork coming from Gary Savage who plucked the ball from a strong Duagh defence to pass it to Conor Enright who with quick thinking hand passed over the Duagh opposition into the hands of Darragh Moriarty and finished the ball into the back of the goals.

Duagh added two quick points, St Pats never gave up despite strong opposition. Scores coming from Jack Moriarty and David Moriarty each getting into their rhythm to add to the scoring. Duagh put a goal and two more points on the board.

Brian Murphy had a clash with a Duagh player which caused him to come off injured within the last fifteen minutes of the game. There was a final goal and two points scored by Duagh, St Pats narrowed the gap down to two points between the teams. St Pats 1-04 Duagh 2-06

Duagh began the second half with determination that appeared too strong for St Pats, Scores from Eoin Greaney and Fergal O’Brien doing their best to keep the space small. There was support available from Gary Savage, Thomas O’Sullivan, and Thomas Nicholson.

Duagh proved too strong and took the lead in the final few minutes of the game. Full Time St Pats 1-08 Duagh 2-18

St Pats Team:  Paudi Bailey, Ben Sharp, Luke Mulligan, Dylan Griffin, Tommy Nicholson, Thomas O’Sullivan, Darragh Moriarty, Conor Moore ©, Eoin Greaney, Jack Moriarty, Brian Murphy, Tommy Lynch, Gary Savage, Fergal O’Brien, and David Moriarty.

Subs Used:  Conor Enright for Brian Murphy (Injured), Mikey Doody for Dylan Griffin, Adrian Greaney for Tommy Nicholson, Cillian O’Riordan for Gary Savage, and Niall McCarthy for Thomas O’Sullivan.

Dingle 0-8 Ballymacelligott  4-09
Venue: Páirc an Ághasaigh  Date: 28th  April 2024

Ballymac took on a depleted Dingle team on Sunday in Pairc an Ághasaigh. Brian Lonergan from Ballymac scored a goal six minutes into the first half. A second goal from a penalty taken by Aidan Breen in the sixteenth minute consolidated the lead. With four minutes to go, Ballymac led:  2-0 to 0-4. Aidan Breen and Donal Daly added a point each before the halftime whistle blew.

Half Time Score:  Dingle 0-4  Ballymacelligott 2-2

One minute into the second half Seán Rice scored Ballymac’s third goal.  Aidan Breen (F) and Donal Daly added two more points. Dingle scored two points. The Credit Union SFL Div 6B  Round 5
Ballymacelligott 2-13  Kenmare Shamrocks 2-12
Venue: Ballymacelligott  Date: 27th April  24

This was a vital game for Ballymacelligott and Kenmare. A win for Kenmare would see them top the table and a win for Ballymac would have them joint second with Kenmare. Ballymacelligott were in full flight in the first half. Kenmare fought back in the second half and came within a point of winning.

The Ballymacelligott team were overjoyed to play this Round 5 game at home in Ballymacelligott. After the unprecedented bad weather, it was great to see- our main pitch in such great condition.

Ballymacelligott playing with the strong breeze cruised through the first half. The Half-time score was 2-09 to 0-5. Ballymac’s goals coming from Shane McGillicuddy and Darragh Regan

Half Time score was: Ballymacelligott 2-09 to Kenmare Shamrocks 0-5

Ballymac started the second half without Brian Cassidy who played so well at centre back in the opening half. The Kenmare players returned on the field like men transformed with Cian O’Connor number 24 leading the charge and opening the scoring with a point.

Darragh Regan added one for Ballymac and Kenmare added another.  Following a foul on Maurice O’Connell Kenmare were down to fourteen. Michael Herlihy scored a point from the resulting free. It was now 2-11 to 0-7.

Kenmare scored a goal and a point in quick succession. Maurice O’Connell added a point for Ballymac and an incredible point from Shane McGillicuddy from 40 yards out. This was the home side’s last score of the game with Kenmare dominating from here on.

Kenmare scored a goal and a point and this left four points between the teams with ten minutes left. Kenmare clawed back three more points. The score now was 2-13 to 2-12

Kenmare failed to score from a 45 in the 27th Minute of the game. Ballymac surely would have lost the game but for two great saves on the line by Cian Godley and Mike Herlihy in the dying minutes.  Ballymac held on and won by a point.

Ciarán Brosnan cornerback, and Cian Godley, full back, defended like lions, especially in the last quarter of the game. Brian Cassidy and Shane McGillicuddy (Injured) were big losses. Darragh Regan, Mike Herlihy, and Maurice O’Connell worked exceptionally hard in the forwards.

Considering the way the game went, it was a good result for our team who notched up terrific scores in the first half combined with great defending, when it mattered at the end of the game.

Full Time: Ballymacelligott 2-13 Kenmare Shamrocks 2-12

Team and scorers: Conor Martin, Ciarán Brosnan, Cian Godley, Jonathan Brick, Cathal White, Eoin Culloty, Skye Lynch (0-1) Cathal Culloty (0-1),  Darragh Regan (1-4), Shane McGillicuddy(1-1), Michael Herlihy(0-4) Conor Brick, Jack Tobin , Maurice O’Connell (0-2).

Subs Used: Brian Godley, Diarmuid Lynch, Jamie Burke, Michéal Savage, and James Carmody.

Next weekend the team travels to play St Michael’s Foilmore. Time, date, and venue to be confirmed.

John Mitchels GAA Club News

.

Senior Men – Our Division 2 team played at home to Templenoe on Sunday. The game ended in a draw on a scoreline of 1 goal and 9 points a piece.

This was followed by the Division 6 fixture v Milltown/Castlemaine which also ended in a draw on the same scoreline! Special word of mention to the team and management of our Under 8/10 girls team who gave a wonderful display of football at half-time in the Division 2 fixture.

Next weekend our Division 2 team are away to Listowel on Saturday evening and our Division 6 team are away to Beaufort. Please see social media during the week to confirm times.

Senior Ladies –  A rip roaring local derby justifiably ended all square between 2 teams who gave everything in front of a large attendance in this Credit Union Donal Curtin Cup Round 3 clash played in Kerins O Rahilly’s on Sunday last. Despite playing into a slight wind in the first half, the home side settled the better and points from Katie Nix and Orlaith Mc Kenna had them 2 in front in the opening five minutes.

Niamh Myers settled the visitors with 2 pointed frees to have the teams level after ten minutes but a sweeping move from Kerins O Rahillys ended with Katie Nix blasting the ball to the net and when Cliodhna Hayes added a point almost immediately the home side looked to be taking a stranglehold of the game.

A brace of points from Grace Hamilton and a point from play from Niamh Myers  narrowed the gap to a single point after twenty minutes before the home side added a point from Katie Nix and then scored their second goal through Sophie Hassett to edge them 5 points to the good.

John Mitchels responded when Diana O Keeffe found Niamh Myers with a long delivery and the full forward finished with aplomb to the net from the 13-metre line.  Myers added a point from a free and just on the half time whistle Ciara Falvey Byrne scored the equailser following good work from Shauna Hannafin to leave the half time score, Kerins O Rahillys 2-04 John Mitchels 1-07.

The home team with wind assistance began the second half just as they started the first and Sophie Hassett scored a lovely point from play on the fifth minute to edge them back in front.

John Mitchels responded and following good interplay between Ashleigh Murphy and Aoife O Brien,  Sarah Kilgallen was fouled and from the resultant free, Rachel Kilgallen restored parity.

Sophie Hassett edged the home side back in front after 15 minutes before Jamie Finnegan combined with Simi Ogungbesan who fed Clara O Dowd and after Clara was fouled, Niamh Myers levelled matters from the resultant free.

With Kerins O Rahillys going on the offensive the John Mitchels defence and in particular goalkeeper, Kayleigh Collins, Erica O Connor, Anna Murphy, Emma Carmody, Tanya O Connor and Julie Foley really stood defiant to keep them at bay.

With five minutes remaining Niamh Myers found Ava Buckley with a deft pass and Buckley scored a wonderful goal from just inside the 13-metre line to put the visitors a goal to the good.

The home side responded with points from Cliodhna Hayes and a pointed free from Sophie Hassett to leave the minimum between the teams and just on the call of time Cliodhna Hayes landed an incredible long range free to ensure that honours were even following a fantastic game of football.

Minor Team – Our Minor Boys played Na Gaeil in the Central League last Monday evening. Na Gaeil won by a goal.

We play Na Fianna on Monday April 29th at 7pm at home in Ballyseedy. Congratulations from all in John Mitchels to Gearoid White and David Sargent on being selected for the Kerry GAA Minor Panel. Best of luck to the Kerry Minor Team and Management for their 2024 campaign from all at the club.

Academy – Well done to all the boys and girls who had a great training session. We take a break next weekend due to the Bank holiday but keep up the practice at home!

Under 9 Boys – John Mitchels U9 Boys travelled to Beaufort to play some noncompetitive Go Games on Sunday morning last. Both side’s played three teams each ensuring all players got plenty of football.

It was fantastic to see all team’s displaying some great skills, with some brilliant defending & scoring from all team’s!!Our sincere thanks to Beaufort for being excellent hosts and we look forward to having you in to us in Ballyseedy in the near future.

John Mitchels Sunday Morning Juvenile Academy takes a well earned break the May Bank Holiday Weekend and will resume as normal on May 12th.

Under 8s and 10s Girls – We take a break next Sunday due to the long weekend. Well done to all of the players who gave a wonderful display of football in Ballyseedy on Sunday at half-time in our Senior Mens game.

Under 14 Girls – There was no game this weekend. Our girls will play a challenge game v Milltown Castlemaine on Tuesday in Miltown. Throw in at 6.30pm. Please be there 6.15pm.

Under 12 Girls – No games this week but training continues as normal this Tuesday from 6 to 7pm. We play Na Gaeil next Sunday at 9.30am away in round 3 of the North Kerry league.

.

Under 11 Boys – Our latest match saw us play Ardfert on a wet Thursday evening away in the Ardfert Recreation Centre on what has to be said was a lovely playing surface. We enjoyed two well contested games with end to end football on show.

The Mitchels boys are getting used to playing together and were able to string together some lovely passages of play. Our defense coped well under pressure and grew into the games. Well done to both sides on a thoroughly enjoyable game.

A big thank you as always to all the parents who travelled with their children and provided wonderful encouragement to our teams. We trained well on Sunday and the coaches are happy with the players commitment and effort.

Parents will receive details of the next match for this age group via Whatsapp which is due to be at home to Ballyduff.  We will take a break from training on the May bank holiday Sunday so that the players and parents can enjoy a well earned break. Until then kids are encouraged to practice their ball skills at home. Watch those windows!!

Under 13 Boys – We played a strong Milltown/Castelmaine team on Friday evening. Well done to our visitors who went away with the win. Our boys battled hard but it was not our evening. Training continues on Wednesday evening at 6.30pm.

We look forward to phase 2 of our campaign which starts on May 12th building on the great work and commitment shown by the players so far this season.

Under 15 Boys – Our Green Team played Firies in Farranfore on Sunday evening. Well done to Firies who won on the day. Our Gold Team play Crokes at home on Wednesday at 6pm and are away to Milltown/Castlemaine on Friday at 6pm. Training times TBC.

Under 16 Girls and Minors – John Mitchels Under 16s travelled to Ballyduff on Saturday evening in the North Kerry League Division 3 game.

Against a very strong, fit Ballyduff team, it was always going to be a difficult task, particularly as Mitchels were missing a number of key players. And with the wind behind them in the first half, Ballyduff started strongly, scoring 2 early goals to give them a definitive edge.

After the first quarter, coaches Brian, Denis and Martin made a number of tactical changes, which helped close down Ballyduff’s dangerous full forward. Mitchels were working hard around the middle of the field, with Nadya, Eva and Ellie working hard, but they were getting little room to operate up front where the Ballyduff defence was very tight.

The second half saw Mitchels benefit from the wind and helped the ball move in quickly. They also tightened up in defence, through Eabha, Nicole and Sadhbh and this severely limited the opportunities for Ballyduff.

Injuries during the game also saw Mitchels lose key players, and they kicked a number of wides from close range, before Nadya closed the scoring with a good point.

A tough challenge from a very strong Ballyduff team, but it was heartening to see the team compete right until the final whistle.  Training for our Minor Girls and Under 16s continues on Monday and Thursday this week.

Bingo – Continues Wednesday and Friday at 8.30PM at the John Joe Sheehy Road. Over 18s only. ID must be provided on request.

Lotto – There was no winner of our lotto jackpot which this week was €3,200.00. This weeks numbers were 6, 8, 18 and 21.  Congratulations to our lucky dip winners – Paddy O’Mahony, Karen Sweeney and Anita O’Sullivan. Next weeks jackpot is €3,250 and we would ask you to please support this important fundraiser for the club.

Membership – Membership is now due for 2024. You can pay online through Clubforce or call to our Club Registrar Georgie Lowe on Sunday from 11 am to 12 noon weekly.

Sympathies – We express our sincere sympathies to those who have recently experienced bereavement. We especially remember the families of Rose Switzer, Moira Godley, John Cusack and Moira Healy.

AFTER all the rain we’ve had during ‘Confirmation season’, the sun shone brightly over Tralee on Saturday for First Holy Communions.

There were two ceremonies taking place at St John’s Church and Our Lady and St Brendan’s Church with families arriving in the fine weather for the special day.

Mercy Moyderwell pupils received the sacrament from Fr David McGovern at St John’s while Fr Amos was the celebrant at St Brendan’s for the Listellick and St Ita’s and St Joseph’s School pupils.

Thanks to their teachers, all the children were well prepared for the day and no doubt enjoyed the celebrations afterwards with their families. Scroll down for photos. TO BUY HI-RES COPIES OF PHOTOS PLEASE CALL 087-9384810…

Tipperary’s 4-5 to 0-11 victory over Waterford means that the winners of Cork v Tipperary next Saturday in Mallow will decide who joins Kerry in the final.

The sides exchanged early scores with Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh from a free and Daire Kiely with a long range effort for Cork that hopped off the hard Brosna surface and over the bar.

.

Cork, playing with the aid of a stiff breeze then hit 2 points on the trot with the dangerous Lydia McDonagh pointing her own free and Abigail with one from play in the 9th minute.

Kerry threatened the Cork goal but overcooked the final passbefore Anna Galvin hit a fine score following a strong Aishling O’Connell run at the heart of the Cork defence.

Lydia McDonagh took on the Kerry defence and slotted a fine score but then it was Kerry’s turn to finally make some headway with Niamh Carmody splitting the posts and Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh blasting over after Danielle O’Leary did the spadework.

The sides were now level at 0-4 apiece with 20 minutes played and Kerry started to take a stranglehold on the contest. A scorching run from Mary O’Connell saw the final pass overcooked once more before Danielle O’Leary and the brilliant Lydia McDonagh exchanged score.

O’Leary pointed once more for Kerry in the 27th minute and a minute later Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh struck for Kerry’s goal after a brilliant through pass from Niamh Carmody to put Kerry 1-6 to 0-5 ahead.

Cork refused to lie down and Eilis Lynch was forced into a brilliant goal line clearance from Lydia McDonagh although Sadhbh McGoldrick did point the rebound from range.

Lydia McDonagh added a free for Cork at the death and it was Kerry that took a slender 1-6 to 0-7 lead in at half time.

Kerry put on the afterburners at the start of the second half and hit 4 scores on the trot from Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh, Niamh Carmody, the hard working Anna Galvin and Danielle O’Leary with a lovely individual effort to push the hosts 1-10 to 0-7 ahead 6 minutes in.

Danielle O’Leary struck another fine score for Kerry but then Melissa Duggan went on a mesmerising run and capped it off with a goal to leave Cork just 3 behind, 1-11 to 1-8 with 12 left to play.

The sides traded scores down the stretch and despite Kerry losing Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Kayleigh Cronin near the finish, a Danielle O’Leary free sealed Kerry’s place in the Munster Final.

REPORT: Kerry FC Suffer Defeat To Bray Wanderers

.

David Moriarty reports on Kerry FC’s defeat at the hands of Bray Wanderers last night…

BRAY WANDERERS 2-0 KERRY FC

Kerry FC made their first trip of the season to the Carlisle Grounds on Friday night as they took on Bray Wanderers by the seaside.

The last time the two took on each other it ended in a 3-2 victory for Friday’s hosts in Tralee. An evening which had everything. A red card, five goals and a thirty-minute break as every type of weather possible hit Mounthawk Park.

Kerry took the lead twice in the game through a screamer from Kevin Williams and a Samuel Aladesanusi header but Bray persevered and heartbreakingly won the game for the Kerry FC faithful.

Continued below…

.

Kerry were boosted going into the game with a nearly fully fit squad as Valerii Dolia made his first appearance in the matchday squad after a lengthy injury which had kept him out since the start of the season.

First-team coach Conor McCarthy rotated the starting eleven slightly with Ethan Kos, Victor Udeze and Ronan Teahan making the starting eleven giving Kerry FC one of their strongest benches to date.

Kerry’s eight-game unbeaten streak ended last week as they lost 2-1 to Athlone Town at home but it was evident early on in the proceedings that they wanted to make things right.

First Team Coach James Sugrue said after the game on Friday that the team were mixing cockiness with confidence and attacker Kennedy Amechi admitted this and was certain that he and his teammates would not make the same mistake twice when speaking to the local media this week.

Continued below…

.

The game was closely tested with both sides not putting too much pressure on each other in the early stages.

The first real chance of the game from either side came in the tenth minute when Freddie Turley slipped in Peter Grogan on the right side of the box but his cross flashed right across the area and nobody was there to get on the end of it.

The first real test on Stephen McGuinness’ goal came from a corner swung in by Sean O’Connell which reached Daire McCarthy but he headed just over the crossbar and unfortunately could not keep it down to test the Bray Wanderers shot-stopper.

Ten minutes before the end of the first half Peter Grogan twisted and turned on the left side of the box however, his low cross only reached the hands of Antonio Tuta who smothered the ball and kept out any oncoming danger in the home side’s attacking penalty area.

The game lacked life and any sort of real urgency from either side. Both sets of fans at the Carlisle Grounds hoped this would change in the second half to give the game a much-needed boost.

Sean McGrath sprung the second half into life as he tested McGuinness in the opening three minutes. It was the start that the second half so desperately craved as both teams were a lot livelier and still cagey in their play around the middle of the park.

Kevin Williams decided to have a pop at goal from distance like he did in the home game against Bray. On this occasion though he did not find the same outcome as the ball went well over the crossbar.

Just two minutes later in the sixty-eighth minute, substitute Cristian Magerusan scored with his first touch on the pitch. Max Murphy delivered the ball in from the right and found Magerusan to break the deadlock for Bray Wanderers with just over twenty minutes to go.

About ten minutes later Bray added a second through Peter Grogan. Conor Knight raced down the right wing and slipped the ball through to Magerusan who was denied well by Antonio Tuta.

Unfortunately, Grogan was there and followed up to convert the rebound. A huge blow to Kerry FC who saw their chances of getting at least one goal back fade away with only eleven minutes left on the clock.

There was very little threat from there on out and Bray Wanderers came out as eventual winners winning by two goals to nil. A tough one to take for Kerry FC as they take back-to-back losses after an eight-game unbeaten run.

They return to Mounthawk Park next Friday night as they host league leaders Cork City for the first time in Tralee.

That is before a quick turnaround with a trip to Longford Town pencilled in for the Bank Holiday Monday. It is a big week ahead for the Kingdom so they will not want to dwell on this result for too long.

Know Your Rights: Sharing Accommodation With Your Landlord

.

Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public…

If you are renting a self-contained flat or apartment in your landlord’s home, your tenancy is covered by residential tenancies legislation and your landlord must register it with the Residential Tenancies Board.

However, if you are renting a room that is part of your landlord’s home, your tenancy is not covered by this legislation.

You may be entitled to claim the Housing Assistance Payment or Rent Supplement in the same way as other tenants. As part of the qualifying conditions for these supports you must be able to prove that the tenancy is genuine.

Continued below…

.

Do I have any rights if I am renting a room in my landlords house?

If you are renting a room in your landlord’s home, you do not have a standard tenancy agreement. Instead, you have a licensee agreement with your landlord. This means that you are in the property by the landlord’s consent or invitation.

As a result, you cannot avail of the type of protection that tenants are entitled to under the residential tenancies legislation.

The position is the same if you are living with a spouse, child or parent of a landlord and you do not have a tenancy agreement or written lease.

As you do not have the same rights as someone whose tenancy comes under the landlord and tenant legislation, you should be aware of the following:

• Your landlord is not obliged to provide you with a rent book or a statement of rent paid
• There is no legal requirement for your accommodation to meet minimum physical standards (unless you are a HAP tenant and then these minimum standards must be met)
• Any notice you may get of the termination of the tenancy is at your landlord’s discretion (although the landlord is obliged to give reasonable notice, the specifics of this notice may vary)
• Your landlord is not obliged to register the tenancy with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB)
• You cannot use the RTB’s dispute resolution service if a disagreement arises between you and your landlord
• You are not protected by the Equal Status Acts 2000-2015, which prohibits discrimination on grounds of gender, civil status, family status, age, race, religion, disability, sexual orientation and membership of the Traveller community – and also on the ‘housing assistance’ ground

Continued below…

.

Can I make an agreement with my landlord before moving in?

Before you arrange to rent a room in your landlord’s home you should agree some ground rules and put them in writing. If you and your landlord each sign and keep a copy of this agreement, you can both refer to its terms in the event of confusion or disagreement. These ground rules might include:

• How long is the tenancy going to last?
• How much notice will either you or your landlord must give if either of you chooses to end the tenancy?
• How much rent will you pay and how often (for example, weekly, monthly)?
• How will rent be paid (cash, cheque, standing order etc.)?
• When will the rent to be reviewed and how much notice will your landlord give you of a rent review?
• How utility bills (electricity, gas, phone, water) will be divided between yourself and the landlord?
• Will your landlord expect you to contribute towards bin collection charges?
• Can you have visitors to stay overnight?
• Are there any restrictions regarding noise levels?

Are there any additional guidelines if you are renting a room as a student?

If you are a student and are renting in your landlord’s house, there is a voluntary regulatory framework to help set ground rules between you and your landlord.

These have been created by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science along with a sample license agreement .

It is recommended that you agree a written licence agreement with your landlord before you take up your accommodation offer.

This licence agreement can be adjusted to suit the needs of the landlord and the student.

What options are there to resolve disputes?

If you are renting a room in your landlord’s home and are unhappy with the way you are being treated, you should try discussing the situation with the landlord and attempt to resolve any issues between you.

You may wish to contact Threshold, which provides information on housing rights or your local Citizens Information Centre

If you have exhausted these options, you may be able to take your case to the Small Claims Court. This is really the only legal recourse you have as a tenant renting a room in your landlord’s home.

Common claims that are heard by the Small Claims Court include disputes about retention of your deposit for what you consider unfair reasons, or deductions from rent for damage to property that is over and above normal ‘wear and tear’.

Does one have more protection if one is renting a Self-contained flat or apartment?

If you are renting a self-contained flat or apartment in your landlord’s home, your tenancy is covered by residential tenancies legislation. Examples of a self-contained flat or apartment include a basement flat or converted garage, which is attached to your landlord’s home.

This type of accommodation is covered by residential tenancies legislation, which gives you certain rights and obligations under residential tenancies legislation.

If the flat or apartment was originally part of the main house, your landlord must register the tenancy.

However, your landlord can choose to opt out of security of tenure rules, which give you the right to stay in your rented accommodation for a set amount of time. You must get notice in writing, before the start of the tenancy, if the landlord wants to take this option.

• If you need further information about any of the issues raised here or you have other questions, you can drop-in to your local Citizens Information Service in Tralee, Killarney or Caherciveen – opening hours are listed on our website www.citizensinformation.ie

Finnegan On Films: A Day For The Rom-Com Lovers

.

Our movie guy, James Finnegan, on some of the films on the box today…

It almost seems like Valentines Weekend with all the romance in today’s film offerings – apart from the first one!

Battle of Britain (Saturday 3.20pm RTE1) is the story of the RAF pilots defending Britain against the might of the Luftwaffe.

Directed by Guy Hamilton, this is as historically accurate as possible, and stars all the heavyweight acting talent of the time including Laurence Olivier, Harry Andrews, Trevor Howard, Curt Jurgens, Kenneth More, Robert Shaw and Susannah York among many others

Continued below…

.

Cinderella (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) is a delightful modern take on the traditional story as our heroine, played  by Camila Cabello, has big dreams and wants to establish her own shop “Dresses by Ella”.

She catches the eye of Prince Robert (Nicolas Galitzine) who disguises himself as a commoner and invites Ella to an upcoming ball.  I won’t spoil the surprises that follow this.

Directed and written by Kit Cannon, this has a catchy soundtrack involving pop and rock hits as well as original songs.

It also stars Idina Menzel, Minnie Driver and Pierce Brosnan as well as the voices of James Corden, James Acaster and Romesh Ranganathan.

The 100 Year Old Man who Climbed out the Window and Disappeared (Saturday 9.45pm TG4) is a Forrest Gump style Swedish comedy drama that is every bit as offbeat and inventive as the title suggests.

Robert Gustafsson stars as Allan, an explosives expert escapes from his retirement home on his hundredth birthday and undergoes a series of adventures. There is a timely Oppenheimer reference, and this is a unique production.

Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler star in the likable romantic comedy 50 First Dates (Saturday 10.15pm RTE1).  He plays Henry, a vet, while she plays Lucy, the woman he loves.

Continued below…

.

However, Lucy has a short term memory loss that means he has to woo her from scratch every day.

Also starring, Dan Ackroyd, Rob Schneider and Sean Austin, it should be noted that this is very much a film of its time and some of the male attitudes have not dated well.

Just as the latest instalment is announced, here is a chance to see the original big screen treatment of Helen Fielding’s novel Bridget Jones’s Diary (Saturday 10.15pm RTE1).

Starring Renee Zellweger, who is brilliant as the titular singleton, trying to live up to her New Year Resolutions to find true love, quit smoking and advance her career but who is torn between her womanising boss Daniel (Hugh Grant) and an uptight lawyer Colin Firth (Mark).

Melissa McCarthy is brilliant as real life writer Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me? (Sunday 12.05am RTE1).  Her latest book is turned down by her publishers, so she decides to make ends meet by forging and selling letters by dead celebrities.

It also stars the equally wonderful Richard E Grant, as her only friend Jack, who helps her sell her forgeries.

The chemistry between the two leads is palpable and was rightly acknowledged by the award ceremonies at the time.  Well worth watching.  Enjoy!

UNIVERSITY Hospital Kerry (UHK) commemorated its 40th anniversary with a heartfelt celebration, honoring the dedication and commitment of past and present staff members.

On April 25, the hospital, which was originally called Tralee General Hospital, hosted a series of special events at its Rathass site, inviting all who have contributed to its legacy over the decades.

The highlight of the day was a symbolic tree planting ceremony, marking the hospital’s past, present, and future.

Continued below…

.

Three trees, carefully selected and planted by individuals closely associated with UHK, served as poignant symbols of its growth and evolution.

As the saplings took root in the hospital grounds, they represented the enduring spirit and resilience of UHK, flourishing amidst the challenges and triumphs of the past four decades.

Following the tree planting ceremony, a specially commissioned UHK ’40th anniversary flag’ was proudly raised by a member of the hospital staff.

The flag, adorned with the emblematic logo of UHK, fluttered in the breeze, symbolizing unity, pride, and a shared commitment to excellence.

Throughout the day, past and present staff members came together to reminisce, share stories, and celebrate the remarkable journey of UHK.

Laughter and camaraderie filled the air as colleagues reunited, forging connections that spanned generations of service to the hospital and its patients.

Mary Fitzgerald, General Manager of UHK, remarked, “This is a significant defining moment for all the team here in UHK. Every staff member, every day strives to improve the hospital, and the past 40 years have shown the team here in UHK to be professional and compassionate in the service they provide to all our patients, their families, and members of the public who visit the hospital.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has been part of University Hospital Kerry’s remarkable journey and we are looking forward with great enthusiasm, to many more significant advances in patient services, in the years to come, for the community we serve”. Scroll down for photos…

Tralee Red Cross To Hold ‘Taster Session’ Next Month

.

A FREE Red Cross ‘Taster Session’ is being organised by Tralee Red Cross for Saturday, May 18 to assist prospective members find out about the society.

Tralee Red Cross Chairman, Joe McDonnell, explained that the ‘Taster Session’ is an unusual event and will help people decide if the Red Cross is suitable for them.

”Many people are looking for an organisation where they can volunteer but they are unsure what would be right for them,” said Joe.

Continued below…

.

“We have members of all ages from all walks of life volunteering with us in various roles at present. While most people in Ireland associate the Red Cross as a First Aid organisation, we can deliver a wide range of services to the local community if we have members available to provide these services.”

”A recent survey of the Tralee Red Cross membership showed that 85% of members cited the ‘feel good’ factor and meeting people as their main reasons for remaining to volunteer with us,” said Joe.

Speaking at the recruitment launch, the Kerry Director of First Aid Units, Michael O’Grady, revealed that the demand for its First Aid and Ambulance service has increased over the last few years.

”Nearly every event that is being organised now wants a First Aid presence there and it can be challenging to meet that demand. First Aid with the Red Cross has always been a great way of people getting quality training and real-life experiences under strict supervision. People thinking of taking up careers in the Medical, Nursing, Healthcare or Ambulance Service have always found this to be very beneficial and with helping them decide if those careers are right for them,” said Michael.

The ‘Taster Session’ on May 18th will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm and is open to everyone over 18 years of age.

”We hope to give attendees a broad overview of the humanitarian services we provide along with an outline of the various training programmes that will be offered to new members. There is no obligation on attendee to become members and we will also have some hands on practice in some of the roles”, said Joe.

A limited number of places are available on the session and they are being offered on a first come-first served basis by applying on email with your name and contact number to chair.tralee@irishredcross.com where further details are also available.

Sinn Féin Candidate Calls For Minor Injuries Clinic To Be Located In Tralee

.
Paul Daly.

A SINN Féin candidate in the Tralee Electoral Area for the upcoming local elections, has called on Minister Stephen Donnelly to ensure that the proposed Minor Injuries Clinic is located in Tralee.

At March’s meeting of the Southern Health Regional Forum, the HSE confirmed it is planning to develop a local injuries unit in Kerry. Paul Daly is one of four candidates running for Sinn Féin in the upcoming Local Elections on June 7.

“Minor injuries clinics see patients who have sprains, breaks , sports injuries, cuts and other serious but not life threatening injuries,” said Mr Daly.

Continued below…

.

“These types of cases cannot be treated by a GP or a pharmacist, but they also clog up A&E departments when more serious and life threatening problems need to be treated as a priority.”

“Such clinics have been established in a number of other locations, most notably in Gurranabraher in Cork. Over 16,000 attend the Cork clinic annually with waiting times average less than one hour.

“The clinic opens 8am to 8pm daily and takes a lot of pressure off the over-burdened ED. This can be a game changer for the people of Tralee and Kerry. I know that a capital submission is on the way to the Minister for decision.”

“The ideal location is Tralee as it is close to UHK with its facilities and also with closer access for patients from North Kerry and West Kerry. Any other location does not make sense,” concluded Mr Daly.

Kerry FC Hope To Get Back On Form Against Bray Wanderers

.

By Ivan Hurley

MATCHDAY 12 sees the kingdom visit the seaside town of Bray in Wicklow for the first time in 2024 as Wanderers are the hosts in the Carlisle Grounds for the latest game in the SSE Airtricity Men’s First Division.

Bray, who are currently fourth after an impressive run of form, host Kerry FC who slipped back to 9th in the table after last week’s defeat to Athlone Town.

In a game where Kerry took the lead, Athlone made all the running and found a way to leave Mounthawk Park with all three points. It was to be Kerry’s first time in nine games tasting defeat after almost seven weeks unbeaten in all competitions, a run everyone in the club was extremely proud of.

Continued below…

.

There were some impressive results along the run — a scoreless draw and clean sheet in Ballybofey against Finn Harps, a comeback draw with the students of UCD who were recently relegated from the Premier Division and the famous 3-0 home win over Longford giving the Kerry faithful a hard-earned three points in Mounthawk Park for the first time.

Bray Wanderers come into the game on an impressive run of form, winning their last three on the bounce, scoring eight goals and only conceding one along the way.

But Kerry will take some confidence coming into the game, knowing Bray only had one win in the opening nine games of the season.

But Ian Ryan’s side are well drilled and will look to continue their push for a play-off place in the Carlisle Grounds on Friday night. Peter Grogan has three goals in three games for the Seagulls and he is sure to be one to watch on Friday evening.

The last time these sides met on Matchday 2, the game was delayed due to a severe storm in Mounthawk Park.

A heavy snow shower followed by thunder and lightning saw the game delayed by some 30 minutes as the ground staff worked hard to get the pitch cleared. Bray went on to win a tremendous on-field battle by three goals to two.

Speaking to the media earlier this week, first-team head coach Conor McCarthy gave a positive squad update.

Sean McGrath battled back from a small injury to play a role last week and is fully fit. Jack Kavanagh and Nathan Gleeson both returned last week from longer-term injuries and remain in contention.

There was also good news for Kerry’s number 10 Valerii Dolia. The former Athlone man got good news from his latest scan and is now part of first-team training, but this one might be a game too soon to see him make his Kerry FC debut. After accumulating five yellow cards, Daniel Okwute is suspended for the fixture.

“Bray are a very good side. They came down to Mounthawk Park earlier this season and you can see their quality, with a lot of good players,” said Conor McCarthy.

“The Carlisle Grounds has always been a hard place to go and we are expecting nothing less on Friday. Thompson, Magerusan, they have a lot of attacking threat. Shane Griffin and Harry Groome are very strong in the middle, fellas who are well-able to keep the ball and create opportunities for the players ahead of them.”

“They have a lot of quality as I’ve said before, Bray for me at the start of the year were a team that could challenge Cork at the top, you can see now they are starting to get a couple of wins but hopefully, we can stop that on Friday night.”
