PUPILS from fifth class in Presentation Primary School were out and about in The Square on Wednesday as part of a new project to raise awareness of waste issues.

The girls formed their own committee called ‘Planet Power’ they hope to influence others in their quest to help clean up Tralee. Principal John Hickey explained.

“It was organised by the girls themselves, who were inspired by Greta Thunberg. They wanted to do something in the local community and were passionate about the waste issue as they want the town to be presented as well as it can be,” said Mr Hickey.

“The fact that we’re a school in the centre of the town means that our students are perhaps more aware of any litter problems in the town than others.  They devised a programme and said they would begin their efforts in The Square.”

“While they want to collect litter, they also see this about community activation. So they want to talk to local representatives and be active in the solution to waste problems in town.”

The girls were commended in their efforts by members of Tidy Tralee Together and Joe Moynihan said it was inspiring to see young people take the initiative and have pride in the town.
