Significant Increase In Thefts From Shops In Kerry So Far This Year

THERE has been a 79% increase in thefts from shops in Kerry in the first six months of 2023 compared to the same period in 2019.

The crime figures were revealed by Chief Superintendent of the Kerry Garda Division, Padraic Powell, at the meeting of the Joint Policing Committee on Tuesday morning.

It showed that Property Crime was up 25% so far this year on Jan-June 2019. Although burglaries and theft from vehicles were down 47% (110 to 58) and 41% (54 to 32) respectively, theft from shop incidents were up 79% (245 to 439) and theft of vehicles increased by 27% (15 to 19).

Assaults causing harm were up 3% (67 to 71) while minor assaults were down 10% (252 down to 226).

Public order offences down 35% (357 to 232) and drunkenness offences down 19% (296 to 240). Possession of drugs for sale or supply incidents were up 20% (44 to 53), Possession of drugs for personal use incidents were down 36% (290 to 185). Possession of offensive weapons (not firearms) incidents were up 32% (25 to 33).
